After the round of four, we had a 10-minute break to rest and regroup. I was talking to Robby about his upcoming fight. "Since Sensei isn't here, I'll take control as team leader. My only advice is to watch out for the Cobra Kai; they'll take every chance to hurt you."
Robby sighed, expressing his frustration. "This hasn't been fun at all. Cobra Kai has ruined the competition and tarnished the reputation of the sport."
I nodded in agreement. "There's nothing we can do about it. Just be careful with Miguel, and I'll do the same with Eli."
With a slight grin, Robby replied, "Will do. Just don't hurt Eli; we aren't like them." We shared a long pause, both understanding the weight of the situation.
Suddenly, Johnny approached us. Robby muttered, "What does he want now?" I reassured him, "I've got your back." We stood up and walked toward Johnny, meeting him in the middle.
"Robby, can you tell him to go? I want to talk in private," Johnny said, gesturing toward me.
"No, he stays. What do you want?" Robby replied defiantly.
"I just want to apologize for my students' behavior. They don't know any better," Johnny said, his tone sincere.
Robby gritted his teeth. "That's what you had to say? Do you realize how much worse you've made not only the competition but karate in general by bringing Cobra Kai back?"
I continued where Robby left off. "We protected them at school when they couldn't protect themselves. We treated them with nothing but respect, and they took our respect and stabbed us in the back. Your teachings didn't make them strong; they became disrespectful and weak, needing to cheat to win. Your ruthless ways of karate did nothing but kill them from the inside, making them indifferent to the idea of hitting their opponents from behind."
Johnny, realizing the weight of my words, lowered his head in submission. "You're right," he admitted before walking back to his team. We followed suit, returning to our corner.
As we walked back, I patted Robby's shoulder. "Don't worry about them; just have fun and prove your worth."
Robby smiled and replied, "I will." I caught a glimpse of Miguel and Eli pushing each other in an argument, but I decided not to mention it, not wanting to ruin the mood.
Semi-Finals: Robby vs. Miguel
The semi-finals began, and first up was Robby's match against Miguel. They faced off, and the match started. Miguel roared, trying to intimidate Robby, but Robby remained unfazed.
Miguel launched a head punch, but Robby easily deflected it. He caught Miguel's arm, pulling him toward himself and delivering a punch to his ribs, making Miguel fold in half. Robby scored the first point, and they returned to their places.
(As it seems, Robby's extra training paid off, I thought to myself.)
The next round commenced, and this time Miguel was more cautious. He approached slowly, attempting a straight chest kick. Robby matched him, and their attacks clashed. Due to Robby's strength advantage, Miguel was sent rolling back.
Robby went in for a head punch, but Miguel leaned aside, dodging the blow. In retaliation, he swept Robby's legs, causing him to fall to the ground. Robby tried to hit Miguel, but Miguel was faster, striking him with the back of his hand and scoring the second point.
They got back up, and I rushed to talk with Robby.
"What are you doing?" the referee asked.
"Time," I replied, turning to him. He looked confused, so I continued, "Since my sensei isn't here, as team captain, I have the right to call time."
He nodded, and I walked toward Robby. "What's going on, man? Focus."
Robby frowned. "Sorry, man, but I'm tired. This tournament is exhausting, physically and mentally."
I sighed, speaking softly. "I know, but finish your match, and then we can enjoy the finals."
Robby nodded and returned to his spot.
The match resumed, and Robby closed his eyes, taking a deep breath and lowering his stance. Miguel, noticing his opportunity, rushed in front of Robby and unleashed a barrage of punches.
Suddenly, Robby opened his eyes and began deflecting all of Miguel's attacks. As Miguel grew tired, he decided to put all his remaining power into one last head punch. Robby, sensing the moment, focused and, at the last second, grabbed Miguel's punch. He lowered himself and elbowed Miguel's ribs, making him take a step back and earning Robby his second point.
They returned to their positions, and Robby grinned.
"Why are you grinning?" Miguel asked, a hint of confusion in his voice.
"Since everything's gone to hell, let's end on a high note," Robby replied.
Miguel sighed, but a smile crept onto his face. "Let's do it, man."
The match started, and both fighters rushed toward each other. Miguel aimed a punch at Robby's head, but Robby ducked, dodging the attack. He moved under Miguel's arm, sweeping his legs and making him fall.
Robby attempted to punch Miguel, but Miguel rolled back, quickly getting back on his feet. He positioned himself in front of Miguel, spinning on his heel for a roundhouse head kick.
Robby caught Miguel's leg, pushing him onto his back and punching him in the chest, scoring the final point.
He got back up and extended his hand to Miguel. Miguel hesitated for a moment but then grabbed Robby's hand, getting back up. The crowd erupted in cheers, witnessing a moment of sportsmanship for the first time in the tournament.
Miguel raised Robby's arm, and the cheers intensified, catching the attention of all the competitors and spectators alike.
