It was one fine day morning. Gladys was going to her friend for inviting her to her birthday party.
"Hi there", came a repulsive yet familiar voice.
"Hi uncle John". She replied while turning back.
John was her paternal uncle. A man in his early forties, still a bachelor. People say it's his magic that scares others (especially women) in spite of his good charm. The dark magic that he masters is obviously scary. And maybe that's why Gladys' parents have asked her to stay away from him.
"Happy birthday my girl. Aren't you turning 16 now? When are you planning to invite me to your birthday party. Huh? John asked with a cynical smile.
"Well , thank you Mr John. I was about to invite you" she said with a forced smile.
"Oh, my sweetie. If not now ,then when? After you die, huh? You see, time is precious".
She was taken back. She knew that he was evil but to say something like this to a girl of 16 on her birthday was beyond evil.
But before she could say something, she got hit by something huge and fell to floor. It was a big blow and she couldn't rise. She was feeling numb. But through her half-open eyes, she saw him leaning towards her.
"I told you my dear princess ,that time is precious. It is all time.... time..... time" . His sound was fading and she felt her whole body shaking like a leaf. " Earthquake?" she thought. The word 'time' was still ringing in her ears.
" time...time..... Time is up, wake up Gladys"
"Mom?"
" Come on Gladys. It's already eight. Don't you think you have to wake up now, birthday girl?", said Lucy while pinching her cheeks.
"Aww, mom it hurts"
" Wait, it was a dream? That all was just a dream? " She let out a sigh.
"What are you doing still in bed, get up now. Aren't you supposed to go to the Carters? You have to personally invite them for the party today.Okay?"
"Yeah,mom"
" And you can spend some time with Kelly and William if you want."
"Can I?"
"But be back before noon"
"Yep" she jumped out of her bed and ran towards washroom. She had to get ready fast.
Kelly and William, the twins of Carters were her best friends from kindergarten. They live in the same neighborhood and so they are more than just friends. Especially William.
She quickly washed up , put on a green plaid shirt and black jeans, barely ate her breakfast and ran towards their home. "Earlier the best."
"Where are you hopping to, my little bunny?"
"Uncle John? What are you doing here?"
"I was waiting for you my dear."
"But how did you knew that I would be here?"
"Ain't that simple dear. I just had to play some tricks with TIME" He gave away with an evil smile.
"Time?"
" OMG. Is my dream going to come true? Is this really happening? What did he meant by playing tricks with time? Is he connected with the dream I had?" A train of thoughts started running in her mind.
"Don't you think you forgot something?"
"Huh?" asked Gladys still confused.
"You are turning 16 now and 16th birthday is special, right? When are you going to invite me to your party chubby cheeks?"
"Well, I was going to eh...later? Yeah later."
Gladys took two steps back. " I have to be careful. What if the dream is really coming true?"
"Don't worry sweetie. I won't hurt you. Here take this little present."John said while giving her a tiny box and a letter.
"What could be in it?"
"Don't open it now. You will get to know what it is soon and it will surprise you a lot . Now be a good girl and accept it. Don't forget to read the letter before opening the box. It holds the instructions of using the box. If done wrong, everything goes wrong. And keep it a secret from your mom and dad. You can do that, right? You have to. Ok then. Bye. Take care and be careful . I really mean it."
Before she could say anything he left and she could only stare at him walking away.
Ding Dong
"Hey Gladys", Kelly opened the door with a lovely smile . She hugged her,"Happy birthday!"
"Stop it! You might choke her"
"Oh, Hi.... William", she blushed
"Hi, Happy birthday"
"What should I say next. Why is my heart beating like this. Will he hear that? Ok. Don't be nervous and just look at his eyes and speak. Eyes? Eyes....eyes.... Why are they staring right at me? OMG he is soooo cute. What should I do?"
"Guys? Guys? GUYS. Stop it ok. I can see you guys flirting... with eyes. And you Mr William Carter don't you dare mess with my bestie."
"Oh is that so? Then can you please tell me what's going on between you and MY bestie, Ms. Carter?"
"Well...well...eh...."
"That's love", came a sound from the drawing hall.
"Oh, you were here, Jacob?"
"Yeah, I knew that you would be coming. So I thought we should hang out for a bit."
"Yeah. Totally. Let's go to your room Kelly. I even have a lot to tell you guys."
Gladys closed the door as soon as they entered the room.
"Whatever I say now should remain within us. It's a secret"
All the three leaned towards her. Gladys narrated the entire story from the dream till the gift.
"Well, I should say. This is a strange gift Gladys. Don't you think so Will?", asked Jacob while taking the present from her.
"Let's see what is written in the letter"said Kelly.
They opened the letter.
Hello Gladys,
Happy birthday.
Birthdays are special and they're meant to be. Though birthdays remind that we are ageing and death is near, still we celebrate it because they are special. And I will help you make this birthday even more special. The present is the key. And this letter will tell you how.
Wishing you a Special Birthday
John
P.S. Once you open the box brace yourself and be ready for an adventure to the MAGIC ISLAND.
"Magic island?" Kelly and Gladys looked each other.
"Wait Jack, don't open the box."
"Why not?"
"I and Gladys read the letter and this box is connected to some magic island. We don't know what will happen."
"Magic island?"
"Yeah and what if something goes wrong?"
"Well,guys... it's not what if.Something is wrong."
"What is that?"
"A portal", Gladys gasped.
"Portal?"
"A portal to the magic island."
They all looked at each other. The portal became bigger and bigger.
"What are we gonna do now? "
"We are doomed."
Woooosh
The room became empty.
