Chapter 100: Wealthy and Formidable
Only a few days ago, Byron had pieced together that the church was likely orchestrating the events surrounding him. Fear gnawed at him that if his location was discovered, the Inquisition might soon be at his doorstep. And now, here he was, crossing paths with those very fanatics.
The Inquisition, better known as the Tribunal of Heresy, was the iron fist of the Ecclesiastical Court, wielding absolute power to root out, judge, and execute those branded as heretics by the church. During the Dark Millennium, they had thrown countless dissenters into prison, eventually burning them at the stake. Among their victims was the pioneering Astronomer who first proposed that the Earth was spherical and revolved around the sun.
