Reynolds POV
We had twins.
I was so happy we had two boys. I wonder, when can babies start training? When did I start training again? Man, I can't wait to teach my baby boys all about magic! I hope they turn out to be augmenters like their old pops. I may know the basics of conjuring, but I can't do anything practical with it except use it as a form of mental exercise.
Alice, on the other hand, is one of the most talented people I've ever seen. Even as an Emitter, she's exceptional. Back then, after she agreed to date me, she joined my party and we went on missions together. Her restorative powers were amazing in and of itself, but what shocked me the most was when she used an area of effect spell, which healed all allies inside. Talk about one of a kind! And I'm her husband!
Hehe… I still don't get tired of saying that.
Back in the good old days before we had to settle down, we would go into the Beast Glades and hunt for mana beasts. Mana beasts were various unique animals and creatures born with the ability to absorb mana into their bodies and create their own mana core, which we call beast cores.
Beast cores had an unlimited amount of uses, making them very valuable and highly sought after. Of course, the higher the classes of beast cores, the more valuable they would be. Mana beasts were classified anywhere from E class (the domesticated fanged bull used for meat and leather) to SS class monsters. I can't tell you much about those, simply because I've never seen nor heard of one, but supposedly they do exist.
Rule of thumb, you should always assume that mana beasts are stronger than humans of the same class. Simply because, even if we take mana out of the equation, a beast's physical body was much stronger than the average human's.
While the Beast Glades were dangerous, as long as you were cautious and didn't get lost, it was pretty easy to keep yourself out of trouble. The stronger beasts tended to be deeper in dungeon-like underground caves or nearer to the core of the Glades. The first few tens of kilometers around the perimeter of the Beast Glades were pretty well mapped, and as long as you were at least a C class adventurer, you'd be fine.
Once in a while, there would be missions posted up that required a couple of parties of adventurers. Those were usually for trying to clear and map the harder dungeons that weren't fully explored. If a mana beast had the power to create its own lair and have other mana beasts serving him, then you could bet there were treasures to be gained.
I tell my sons all about this life, telling them this and much more so I can brainwa… I mean… nudge them to at least gain some experience as adventurers when they get older.
I don't know what I'll do if my sons never awaken. Oh God, it doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as they can train to become any kind of mage, I'll be a proud and happy father.
It's pretty easy to tell what type of mage someone will be when they awaken because when augmenters, conjurers, and deviants form a translucent barrier, the mana behaves differently around them during that time.
Augmenters, when they first awaken, form a sort of repelling force around the barrier, signifying that they have dominant mana channels in their body. Conjurers, on the other hand, form a vacuum of mana around them, which means that their mana veins are much more dominant. Of course, the degrees of the pushing force and vacuuming force depend on their talent in either category.
I don't mean to brag, but when I first awakened, at the early age of twelve, by the way, I was sleeping and the pushing force made me levitate for a good couple of minutes! Enough force to lift a human body?
If it wasn't for that time… I'm sure we wouldn't have settled down this fast. Anyways, as soon as they awaken, I'm going to train them. If they end up becoming conjurers, I think I can get them a tutor from the main town since Alice and I aren't adept enough to be teaching them…
...Is what I said but…
BOOM
My eyes widened in horror. I let go of her and rushed into the fire and ruins. I pushed bricks and wooden pillars away frantically, ignoring the searing pain in my back. After a desperate search, I found Arthur in the middle.
My little Art had a barely noticeable translucent barrier flickering around him. The repulsion of his awakened powers had caused this explosion. He was floating in the center of a crater that had obliterated three-fourths of our house and our entire backyard.
"He isn't even three years old," I said in disbelief, staring at the Arthur . But seeing that Arthur seemed to be okay, I turned my attention to Sasuke. I pushed aside some debris where I thought he might be, but to my surprise, there was a mana barrier around him.
Sasuke was lying there, shielded by a mana barrier that protected him from harm. Relief washed over me as I carefully cleared the remaining debris and lifted him to safety.
I carefully made my way back through the debris, holding Sasuke close to my chest. As I approached Alice, who was still cradling Arthur, I saw the worry etched deeply on her face. Arthur's small frame trembled slightly, his eyes wide with concern for his brother.
Alice looked up at me, her face pale and eyes filled with a mix of relief and fear. "Is he okay?" she asked, her voice trembling.
I nodded, trying to steady my own shaking hands. "He's safe. a strange mana barrier protected him."
Alice's gaze shifted between me and the boys. "Arthur..... I didn't think… I didn't think his awakening would be like this."
Arthur's small form seemed to sense the situation. His eyes, usually so bright, were now clouded with the weight of what had just happened. I could see the guilt forming in his young eyes, as if he somehow understood that his awakening might have caused harm.
"I know, Arthur. It's not your fault," I said softly, trying to comfort him..
Sasuke pov
Weeks later.
It seems I passed out because my brother awakened, causing the house to explode. My younger brother must be a prodigy to awaken at just age three when most people typically awaken between ages ten and fifteen.
Sigh. "Even in this life, I have a prodigy for a brother," I thought, giving a wry smile. Although I didn't want to admit it, I hoped that in this life my brother wouldn't be anything special. I didn't want him to suffer like Itachi did just because he was a prodigy.
Besides rebuilding the house, a lot happened this year. Mother began to teach Arthur and me how to read and write, although I could read already, writing is completely different from what I know. From time to time, I watched Arthur and Father training, though it wasn't anything too hard. On our third birthday, although I didn't awaken, we both received wooden swords.
"Sasu, Art, time for dinner!" Mother's shout broucht me back from my thinking.
A bit later at the kitchen.
I calmly ate, savoring the meal. Sometimes I glanced at Father; he seemed like he wanted to say something. Knowing Father, though, it was probably something foolish, so I decided to ignore him. "Hmm, so delicious. Mother must be a born chef to cook something so delicious."
"Honey, I think it's time we get Art a proper mentor," Father suddenly said, breaking the silence.
sighed inwardly. I knew this day would come. Arthur had so much potential. Though I wasn't sure about the how competent other are, but I was certain that someone like Father was incompetent to train a prodigy like Arthur.
A clang drowned out the silence as my mother dropped her fork.
"What? Reynolds! Arthur isn't even four yet! No! Besides, you said if our son was an augmenter, you'd be able to teach him!" Mother spoke with evident desperation.
"I never expected our son to be such a prodigy in mana manipulation. Who has ever heard of an awakening at the age of three?" Father responded calmly.
"But that means he'll have to leave home! He's only four, Reynolds! We can't have our baby leave home at such an early age!"
Confused by Mother's statement, I interupted their quarrel, "Mom, Dad, why would brother have to leave home alone? Why don't we all go together?" I was genuinely puzzled why they even would consider sending a four-year-old away alone.
Upon hearing my words, both burst into laughter. Father said, "I guess we really didn't think about all of us going together," and Mother added, "I'd feel better about this if I'm there when he's tested and meet his teacher."
Father slams his palms on the table, causing our food to fly into the air. "Looks like we're all going to Xyrus City!" he exclaims. "hrmm"
"Sorry, Sasuke," he apologizes as he turns towards me upon hearing my voice.
Giving him a blank look, I respond, "Hmph, okay."
Mother comes over to me and begins cleaning the food that has landed on me. I turn to look at Arthur and am surprised to see that he is completely clean, not a drop of food on him.
Now, after a day, I'm surprised to find that they have already finished preparing for the three-week journey.
