Mrs. Bancroft's sharp gaze locked onto Delilah, and for a split second, Delilah froze. Memories of their last encounter rushed back.

How could she not have guessed that she could run into any one of those women at such an event? The last thing she wanted was to bring embarrassment to Madam Quinn.

The tension between them was tangible, but before Mrs. Bancroft could speak, Madam Quinn broke the silence.

"Everyone, meet Delilah Sterling, my grand goddaughter," Madam Quinn said with a proud smile, her hand resting on Delilah's arm. "She's family."

Delilah forced a smile as she returned her gaze to Madam Quinn, though her stomach churned with anxiety.

Mrs. Bancroft's lips pressed into a thin line, her eyes narrowing in what could only be described as disdain. But before anything else could be said, the auction's host called everyone's attention, and the event began.
