CHAPTER 3: Gift

Eri pouted when she saw his smirk.

"If you could do it, you should've done it from the beginning."

"I can't materialize the swords inside others in normal situations. It's …weird? Sometimes I can do it, sometimes I can't," he answered truthfully,

Yuta was confident that the problem was not with him.

When he failed, it would be as if a force field of "something" was protecting his target's body. It shouldn't be a Quirk, since many people had it.

Was it mana?

Judging from Overhaul's expression, he seemed to know the answer to Yuta's confusion., But he didn't explain anything. Instead, he spoke.

"You've grown considerably, Yuta. I trust you're not letting it go to your head."

"I'm not."

It didn't look like Overhaul believed him.

"We should focus on the training!" Eri clapped her hands and tried to divert the topic when she noticed the atmosphere between Overhaul and Yuta.

Overhaul nodded.

"Eri, you'll fight Yuta."

"What!? Why Uncle!? I can't even reach Level 3 on Target Practice! Why are you making me fight Yuta?" She looked desperate to avoid the battle.

"Don't worry. Yuta will hold back."

Yuta did not know why Dad was making the two of them duel. Still, he spoke.

"I can sharpen or dull my swords. And I'll make sure they don't hit too hard. We should be good to go."

"...Fine," Eri answered, downcast.

The two stood against each other at the center of the room.

"The first one to hit the other wins. There are no rules, but don't cross lines that shouldn't be crossed. Use common sense," Chisaki announced. "Now, begin!"

Yuta swiftly jumped back. Eri's Quirk could rewind the time of any living organism. Simple and OP. After the training, she could use it to Rewind someone temporarily. Her Quirk had a small range, but maybe the range also increased. He wasn't willing to risk it and kept his distance.

A sword appeared behind Yuta and attacked Eri. While Eri's Quirk was powerful, it was weak against Yuta who could attack from a distance.

Or so he thought.

When the sword entered the 3 meters (9.8 ft) range of Eri, he felt something grasp his sword. His hair on the neck stood.

He instantly de-materialized his sword.

"Why did you do that?" She asked.

Yuta was breathing heavily. In that instant, he had felt "it".

His swords were an extension of him and Eri could use her Quirk on him through the swords. It was a new discovery and not a welcome one.

If he hadn't retracted his sword, she could've thanos-ed him even without infinity stones.

"Yuta? Are you alright? You are sweating too much."

Watching Overhaul's twitching lips trying to suppress his smirk, he finally understood what was happening. He had been set up!

Dammit, even though he said he wasn't drunk on his powers, his Dad had taken on himself to show him that there was always a heaven above heaven.

"Yuta?" Eri spoke his name with an anxious gaze as if he would scold her.

'She wasn't afraid because she thought I could harm her but because she knew I had no chance against her,' thought Yuta. Either way, he wasn't an asshole who would lash out after losing in a fair duel.

"I lost," he smiled. "That was impressive, Eri."

The corner of her lips rose as if affected by his smile.

One and a half year later

[Yuta Chisaki]

[Age: 8 years]

[Quirk: Sword Choujin (B)]

[Level: 34]

>Strength: 18

>Dexterity: 16

>Stamina: 20

>Intelligence: 59

>Mind: 60

>Stat Points: 0

Mind was directly related to his control over his swords. The higher Mind stat allowed him to materialize more swords that were sturdier and sharper. After learning about this, he had heavily invested in the stat.

From the beginning, Yuta used his free stat points to only increase Intelligence and Mind. His intelligence was now on par with those who had intelligence boosting quirk.

After reaching B rank, Yuta gained three abilities.

Sword Teleportation. (Can teleport his swords within visual range. The range is five times more than his sword-materialization range.)

Sword Imitation. (Allows him to copy swords, literally and metaphorically.)

The last ability was some kind of physical boosting ability. Yuta had not been able to activate it until now. It was dormant, like Foresight. There must have been conditions to activate it. However, he did not know them.

Why was recounting his abilities?

It definitely wasn't to avoid what was happening in front of his eyes.

"Yuta, you said you could make one when I asked you. Give it to me."

This was Eri speaking.

He did not know which stupid internet journalist wrote the article about the best friends exchanging their Quirks, but she started pestering him for it after she read it.

She even gave him a piece of her horn — Yuta nearly had a heart attack, thinking she had broken her horn to give it to him until she explained it was broken before she met him in kindergarten and she did not do it now.

It was her grandfather who revealed the actual history behind the broken horn. When Eri erased her father and her Quirk went berserk, her Mom thought Eri would erase her too and hit her in the head – to kill her – in desperation and fear. It was how the broken piece of horn came to be and how everyone found out her horn stored her power.

The broken horn was Eri's dark past but it was also the last memento of her family and the happy memories. It was important to her and she couldn't throw it away despite the heavy memories that intervened with it. To her, it was a synonym to the word "family".

She gave that broken horn to Yuta.

He obviously did not accept it and the two had bickered.

Then the word reached Mom and now Yuta wore the small horn around his neck at all times. Reincarnated or not, he didn't have the guts to say no to an angry mom.

"Yuta~~! Give. It. To. Me."

The little devil was definitely enjoying teasing him. Their family around the dinner table were all smiles watching him and Eri like that.

Argh!!! He was never going to exchange the Quirks. It was too embarrassing!

"Yuta~~"

She followed him after the dinner, the next day, the next week, and continued until he gave up.

"Okay, fine! I'll make one! Happy?"

"Yes!"

Yuta began to materialize a sword small enough to fit inside his palm. It was white and had a matching texture to the horn he wore as a pendant – it was Eri's demand.

"It's permanent, right? You said you could make a permanent one," She spoke excitedly. "If it disappears, I'll tell mom you gave me a defective gift."

Yuta didn't know how to feel at the blatant blackmail.

Where did the cute Eri who followed him everywhere and answered him with a yes go? Who was this shrewd devil in front of him?

Was she learning all of this from mom or from the damned internet she had been spending most of her time these days?

Where was Justice?

In the end, he made a small permanent sword. Eri took it to mom to make a pendant out of it.

With his current abilities, Yuta could make small permanent swords, but he didn't think the first permanent weapon would be used like this.

Moments after Eri left, Overhaul came through the open door.

"I met Eri on my way. She looked excited. Did you finally agree to her request?"

He nodded with a defeated gaze.

"Good for you," Chisaki let out a small smile. "For now, sleep, you need to wake up early tomorrow."

Yuta noticed the nuisance in his Dad's words.

"Is something important going to happen tomorrow?"

"Since you said you needed a teacher to help you train your Quirk, I contacted a former coworker of mine who uses a sword as his main weapon. He will be coming tomorrow to test you. If you pass his exam, he will take you as his disciple."

The news excited Yuta.

His Quirk progress slowed considerably after he reached B rank.

But with this, his speed of growth should pick up pace.

"By the way, dad. You used to work in the Hero Organization, Black Bulls, right? Is my teacher someone from there?"
