Capítulo 18: How knowledge works and Transfiguration exercises

A week had passed since Harry had completed the first stage of the mind palace, and when he asked Estus what he was going to teach Harry, he was disappointed to learn that all Estus was going to teach him for the foreseeable future were the general basics of crafting.

On the other hand, Aaron was relieved to know that Estus didn't try to teach Harry to run before learning to walk. He was disappointed that he couldn't unlock new crafting trees yet, only to learn later that most of that general knowledge pertained to most magical discipline, raising the mastery of more than a few skill trees up to level twenty-five and some even past that to thirty.

After asking Athena why novice knowledge helped them past the apprentice level, he learned that knowledge he didn't have would still add to his mastery, and it was the higher-than-novice knowledge that had carried him past the threshold previously.

"I still can't understand how that works, you know," Harry told his brother as they walked down the corridors to transfiguration class.

"It's easy. Imagine if we had a cone divided into four levels, and each level was meant to be filled with a certain color. If red is the novice level, and purple is the apprentice level, we filled half the novice area with red novice-level knowledge, and then we jumped to purple apprentice level, filling the other half of the novice area with apprentice level,

"So now that we poured more novice red into the cone, it joined the rest and filled more of the novice area. Now, the extra apprentice purple has risen, and therefore, our level has gone up. When Percy said novice-level practice won't have any impact after apprentice, he only meant repetitive knowledge is useless. No matter how small, new knowledge still adds to our power and skills.

"Athena said that this is most likely why most people never reach the master level, because they use higher-level knowledge to bridge the gap and then never look back, so when they reach the zenith of what they think a subject has to offer, they always come up a bit short,

"Because even if they have all the expert, adept, and apprentice level knowledge, which isn't possible without complete knowledge of the novice level, they still come up short of filling the cone, and reaching master level at the end." Aaron said, using a lumos spell Lily had modified to show his brother what he meant.

(A/N: for those who can't imagine or want visual representation, I used paint to show you a crude example and attached it to this paragraph.)

"You know, if I wasn't your twin, at least half of that would've gone over my head." Harry rolled his eyes.

"Yes, I know, but you are my twin, so stop whining about problems that don't exist," Aaron waved the light show away.

"Wait a minute, does that mean we would have to find everything about a skill, to reach master?"

"Not exactly. If we don't have any significant gaps in that level of knowledge, we can figure out the rest, so if we lack one or two level's worth of knowledge missing from each section, we can connect the rest to discover the missing part,

"In my case, as long as I have less than a level's knowledge missing, all the perks in that section will automatically appear, but unlike the things we discover on our own, it doesn't give me the knowledge so I can practice, it will give me a notion of what the knowledge or technique is so that I can figure it out on my own." Aaron sighed.

"Wow, your Mom is strict when it comes to learning and research, she tried her best not to leave any loopholes for you," Harry gloated at his brother.

"She used to be the head researcher of a premier medical research institute back where we lived, the smallest mistake in the medical field can be fatal, and according to her, magic is more dangerous than anything she has seen previously." Aaron explained.

"She's stricter than Prof. McGonagall. I never imagined that would be possible." Harry chuckled.

"Speaking of Prof. McGonagall, we're here," Aaron said. Walking into the transfiguration classroom, he led his brother to a seat at the back.

The twins sat down, taking out their transfiguration textbooks and wands as they waited for the professor to arrive.

"Hey mate, how are you?" said Ron, who was surprisingly early this time.

"I see the threat of turning you into a watch actually worked on you, Ron," in their second lesson, Ron had come to the class rather late, so Prof. McGonagall had threatened to turn him into a watch if he was late again.

"It's not like I wanted to be late last time, this castle is just way too confusing," Ron said, blushing up to his ears.

"It's alright, no reason to be embarrassed, I would've been half an hour early if she said that to me." Harry chuckled.

Ron and Harry fell deep into conversion, eventually turning to Quidditch and the flying lesson they were about to have that afternoon.

Meanwhile, Aaron took out a matchbox from his book bag. Putting one match on the table, he transfigured it into a simple silver needle. The next match turned golden, and the one after that had a mix of silver and gold twisting around each other. Match after match, he made the design more delicate, stopping to scrutinize each. If he found a flaw, he would take out a new match and transfigure it again, this time perfectly.

A hush came over the class as Prof. McGonagall entered. Aaron, oblivious to this, continued his exercise. He finally ended the exercise when the matches ran out. Looking up, he saw the Professor standing before his desk, watching him intently.

"Impressive work, Mr. Potter, ten points to Gryffindor. however, do pay attention to class." Prof. McGonagall said, walking back to the chalkboard.

"As you have adequately demonstrated your ability to change transfigure an object, in this lesson you will learn how to restore a transfigured object." saying that, she summoned the needles on Aarons's desk, pointing her wand at one of the needles, she cast, "Reditus," the needle turned back into a match, she repeated the process for each needle, clearly enunciating the incantation.

Once all the needles turned back into matches, she transfigured all but two of them into silver needles and floated them to each student, turning the last two matches into identically intricate needles with colors matching the twins, she floated the needles to them.

"Remember that the incantation is Reditus, Mr. Potter. You and your brother showed impressive results, so your needles are harder to untransfigure. The two of you must only remove one part of the transfiguration with each attempt: the engravings, the color, the shape, and finally the material. If you can do it, I will give you one of my personal journals on novice transfiguration," she said.

"How can you cause us to have extra work so easily? I wasn't even doing anything and I was lumped in with you," Harry grumbled.

Hermione, the ever-competitive bookworm, stood up and asked the professor to give her the same exercise.

"Miss Granger, while your accomplishments in transfiguration are note-worthy, yor skill hasn't reached the level required for this exercise. Rest assured that I will extend the same offer to you if you happen to reach that level," Prof. McGonagall said.

Hermione sat down and started angrily practicing the untransfiguration spell, occasionally sneaking glances at the twins.

The twins, full of confidence, did as instructed. However, they discovered that, unlike transfiguration and untransfiguration, undoing one single detail was a herculean task.

Undoing one detail required them to visualize the object and then erase a single detail without changing any other aspect.

By the end of class, they had only managed to erase the engravings and colors without changing the shape or the material, each time failing to remove a single aspect without affecting another.

"Very good, your progress is impressive, come find me at my office when you succeed and I will give you the journal." Prof. McGonagall said, motioning them out of the class.

Walking out of the class, an aura of gloom surrounded Aaron, "well, that was an interesting exercise," he said, "but why did she take my matches?"

"Haven't you heard? Children aren't supposed to play with matched," Harry chuckled.

"Oh shut up," Aaron said, the aura of gloom almost physically manifesting around him.

"Cheer up, at least we have flying lessons to look forward to," Harry said.

"Speaking of flying, are you going to pull that stunt to get into quidditch again?" Aaron asked.

"Maybe if the same things happen, otherwise, I'm going to go with the flow."

"Alright, let's go fly."
