Capítulo 14: The Sorting Hat

"Potter, Aaron."

The Professor called Aaron's name, and the hall went silent for a few seconds, as Aaron walked toward the Sorting Hat, whispers echoed around the hall, and he could feel everybody's eyes on him.

He could feel three people focus on him more intently than anyone else, looking at the teacher's table, he locked eyes with Dumbledore first, giving a small nod, he glanced past Quirrell, noticing a flash of red in his eyes, Aaron made sure that his eyes didn't linger, finally, he locked eyes with Snape, who seemed close to shooting lasers out of his eyes.

"It seems seeing Mom's hair and eyes on someone with the Potter surname is sending him over the edge," Aaron muttered under his breath, "Can't wait to see what he does when Harry is called."

Reaching the stool, and picking the hat up, he paused to look at it, taking his wand out, he cast a cleaning charm on the hat, and immediately followed by casting a discrete identification spell, satisfied, he sat down and put the Sorting Hat on his head.

'Thank you for that, I haven't felt this clean in ages.'

'You're welcome, and I have never seen such a heavily enchanted object in my life, the founders were impressive indeed.' Aaron replied.

'Casting identification charms without asking is quite rude you know.' Said the hat.

'I'm sorry, but I'm not wearing an enchanted object without knowing what it does.'

'Cautious and intelligent, Ravenclaw would fit you well.'

'I still can't tell what you do. If your function was just for sorting, they wouldn't have hidden the enchantments so well.'

'If you didn't find anything, why did you put me on?'

'To test a theory, and my barriers, which you can't seem to breach.'

'How Gryffindor of you, and I would need permission to breach your barriers.'

'Which I won't be giving.'

'Why not?'

'I have secrets that are best left unknown.'

'Firstly I have existed for hundreds of years, there isn't much I haven't seen, and I am forbidden from revealing what I see to others.' the hat assured him.

As their mental conversion went on the whispers in the hall increased in volume, it was rare for the hat to be indecisive.

'I'm not going to just take you at your word," said Aaron.

'How can I convince you that you can trust me?'

'Show me your enchantments, even if I won't understand them, if you want to know all my secrets, you have to show me all of yours.'

'So that was your aim all along, quite cunning.'

'Yes, yes, how Slytherin of me, I get it.'

'Quite, alright then, you know how to bargain, come to the Headmaster's office when you can, and I'll show you everything I can.'

'Alright then, but I should warn you, going back on your words isn't a good idea.' Aaron let the hat read his memories, interested in seeing how much he could see.

'Oh, A traveler, haven't seen one of those in a while, and your brother is a returnee, that's interesting.'

'Wait, You've seen people like us before?' asked Aaron.

'I already told you, I've seen quite a lot.'

'I honestly didn't expect that, I'm guessing you can't tell me who?' said Aaron.

'I have to protect their privacy, the same way I would with you.'

'Alright then, send me to Gryffindor.'

'You never planned on going anywhere else, did you?' the hat sighed.

'I'm not about to leave my brother for the majority of the next seven years, so no.'

'You're afraid he wouldn't follow you.'

'No, he probably would, but I won't be putting him in the position of having to choose.'

'Lady Helga would be proud, alright then, better be…'

"GRYFFINDOR"

'Looking forward to the next time we meet.' Aaron said.

'Likewise.'

Aaron stood up, his robes changing to match the students at the Gryffindor table, walking towards the boisterous Weasley twins, he sat down next to Fred.

"Potter, Harry."

Harry walked up to the stool and sat down, putting the Sorting Hat on his head, he heard the hat's voice.

'Hello, Mr. Potter.'

'You sure took your sweet time with my brother, was it that hard to choose where to put him?'

'No, he had decided where to go before he put me on, he just decided to see if he could swindle me into revealing my enchantments in exchange for letting me see his memories.' the hat chuckled.

'Oh, so you know about our circumstances then.'

'What makes you think I agreed?'

'Because I know my brother, even if he let you in without getting a promise, you would still show him your enchantments.' Harry explained, 'You wouldn't want to be dismantled by him after all.'

'Are you going to bargain for something too?'

'No, I'm sure my brother did that for the both of us.' Harry opened his mind.

'Alright then, be on your way, you can visit me along with your brother if you want.'

"Gryffindor"

Harry stood up, walked towards the Gryffindor table, and sat down next to his brother, grinning to himself he asked: "I hear you have an appointment later."

"You know I had to do it."

"You had to? Or you couldn't help yourself?" Harry rolled his eyes.

As "Zabini, Blaise," was made a Slytherin. Professor McGonagall rolled up her scroll and took the Sorting Hat away.

Albus Dumbledore had gotten to his feet. He was beaming at the students, his arms opened wide, as if nothing could have pleased him more than to see them all there.

"Welcome," he said. "Welcome to a new year at Hogwarts! Before we begin our banquet, I'd like to say a few words. And here they are: Nitwit! Blubber! Oddment! Tweak! Thank you!"

He sat back down. Everybody clapped and cheered. Harry rolled his eyes at the familiar line.

As he was about to continue the previous conversation with Aaron, the empty table was filled with food, smiling at the familiar sight, he started putting food on his plate.

"Well, this is a lot of food," said Aaron, following his brother's lead, He had never seen so many things he liked to eat on one table: roast beef, roast chicken, pork chops and lamb chops, sausages, bacon and steak, boiled potatoes, roast potatoes, fries, Yorkshire pudding, peas, carrots, gravy, ketchup, and, for some strange reason, peppermint humbugs.

Aaron piled his plate with a bit of everything except the peppermints and began to eat. It was all delicious.

"That does look good," said the ghost in the ruff sadly, watching Aaron cut up his steak,

"Can't you –?" Ron asked, having sat down next to his brother after the sorting.

"I haven't eaten for nearly four hundred years," said the ghost. "I don't need to, of course, but one does miss it. I don't think I've introduced myself. Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington at your service. Resident ghost of Gryffindor Tower."

"I know who you are!" said Ron, "My brothers told me about you, you're Nearly Headless Nick!"

"I would prefer you to call me Sir Nicholas de Mimsy --" the ghost began stiffly, but sandy-haired Seamus Finnigan interrupted. "Nearly Headless? How can you be nearly headless?"

"Like this," he said irritably. He seized his left ear and pulled. His whole head swung off his neck and fell onto his shoulder as if it were on a hinge. Someone had tried to behead him but had not done it properly. Looking pleased at the stunned looks on their faces, Nearly Headless Nick flipped his head back onto his neck, coughed, and said, "So, new Gryffindors! I hope you're going to help us win the house championship this year. Gryffindors have never gone so long without winning. Slytherins have got the cup six years in a row! The Bloody Baron's becoming almost unbearable -- he's the Slytherin ghost."

Aaron looked over at the Slytherin table and saw a horrible ghost sitting there, with blank staring eyes, a gaunt face, and robes stained with silver blood. "How did he get covered in blood?" asked Seamus with great interest.

When everyone had eaten as much as they could, the remains of the food faded from the plates, leaving them sparkling clean as before. A moment later the desserts appeared. Blocks of ice cream in every flavor you could think of, apple pies, treacle tarts, chocolate eclairs and jam doughnuts, trifle, strawberries, Jell-O, and rice pudding.

Finally, the deserts too disappeared, and Dumbledore stood up again,

"Ahern -- just a few more words now that we are all fed and watered. I have a few start-of-term notices to give you."

"First years should note that the forest on the grounds is forbidden to all pupils. And a few of our older students would do well to remember that as well." He said, his eyes lingering on the Weasley twins.

He also warned everyone about the third-floor corridor on the right-hand side.

'It seems the philosopher stone is here, just like last time.' Harry wondered if Hagrid was the one who took it from Gringotts this time too.

After suffering through the school song, they were finally ushered towards their dorms, with Percy telling them the password 'Caput Draconis'.

Entering the Gryffindor common room, Percy directed the girls through one door to their dormitory and the boys through another. At the top of a spiral staircase, they found their beds at last: six four-posters hung with deep red, velvet curtains. Their trunks had already been brought up. Too tired to talk much, they pulled on their pajamas and fell into bed.

"Good night, Harry," Aaron whispered.

"Good night."
