Capítulo 68: Chapter 68 - No Guarantees

Candace didn't take on too much responsibility.

No one living in this world is entirely an island.

She had chosen Rama, and Rama supported her, maintaining Aaru Village's interests.

On this basis, Rama provided her with a full set of alchemical potions and directly informed her of the enemies she would face, instead of letting her fumble around without knowing her opponents.

Rama considered her interests, so she had to consider Rama's, and this balance had to be above her friendship with Dehya.

Because Rama involved more chains related to Candace, she could disregard herself but not others.

Candace got up and paced.

She was quite the actress, her brows furrowed slightly with a touch of worry and anxiety.

"?"

Dehya didn't understand.

"I can try to give you a chance to meet Rama."

When there's a significant gap in power, the other party doesn't need to be kind. Even just meeting you is a great honor.

"But whether you can persuade Rama is up to you."

It should be persuadable. This was the opportunity Rama had been waiting for. However... Dehya, like herself, didn't seem to have any special value.

She rubbed her temples.

Using beauty to serve isn't really a way out, but sometimes that's all you have.

When you want something, what else can you offer?

Strength, wisdom, certain special talents, Mora... Candace considered her combat skills decent, but the effect of Rama's alchemical potions was so good it left her speechless.

Moreover, Rama never hid his preference for cold machines over people.

In business, it's not about what you have but what the employer needs.

You say you're strong and can ensure the employer's safety, but if the employer needs someone who can tame desert beasts and you can't, you're out and replaced by someone who can.

Got a problem with that?

No.

The employer does business openly, needing someone with that skill, and if you don't have it, you're out. No hard feelings.

Business is like that.

The weaker party must present something the other party is interested in, even if that's all they have...

"Isn't the tribe cooperating with Mishal?" Dehya sensed something amiss. "What opportunity will Rama give me?"

She wasn't foolish and didn't think she was worth that much.

Candace, of course, had an answer, "To the tribe elders, Mishal says he's cooperating with them to hunt the [Corps of Thirty] and oppose the Akademiya."

"But guess what he tells the [Corps of Thirty]?"

Double-dealing, true to his mercenary nature.

"Rama doesn't believe him."

Dehya's eyes brightened.

"Rama certainly doesn't believe him," Candace was very confident.

She concealed some things, but her words were true; she didn't lie.

Mishal did lean towards the desert, as he naturally wouldn't favor the rainforest people over the desert folk.

His words were to appease the [Corps of Thirty] and buy himself more time.

But he did say those words.

People are accountable for their words. How they think doesn't matter; Rama plans to make those words a reality.

Dehya seized the opportunity to change her dire situation.

"You can only seek external help. Mishal's hatred for Uncle Kusayla is beyond our imagination."

Although he killed Kusayla and made Dehya lose her father, Candace was certain that Dehya's hatred wasn't as deep as Mishal's.

Because Mishal lost more—his [Deshret's Relic] was in decline, no longer as glorious as it once was.

"He broadcasted it widely to lure you to your death."

"The Vision is not invincible, and [Deshret's Relic] is not so down and out that anyone can bully them."

Candace's core point was simple: You can't win. Going means certain death, and dying might be the best outcome.

A worse fate could be living worse than death.

So, external help was needed.

This wasn't a hint; Dehya fully understood.

"I know, I know," she waved her hand. "Even if I could win, with people in their hands, they could threaten me to come and continue to use those people against me."

Being threatened once means you'll be threatened again.

Hoping that compromising could save anything will ultimately leave you with nothing.

Candace propped her chin with one hand, studying her friend.

The reality was, although Dehya's trouble coincided with Rama's, Rama never did unprofitable deals.

He wouldn't help just because it was convenient. Rama didn't even have the concept of convenience; he was highly purpose-driven.

So, what could Dehya offer?

Candace shook her head, her expression calm.

Would she feel guilty about this? No.

The whole matter had nothing to do with her. She concealed some things but didn't intentionally deceive. Besides, she couldn't solve the problem anyway.

Being under someone else's roof, extending a helping hand was her limit.

What else could she do?

Go with Dehya to die?

This was the most help she could offer given her position and abilities.

She had tried her best. Though she couldn't say there were no regrets, there was no need for guilt.

Limited ability, nothing more to do.

"If you've made up your mind, I'll handle this," Candace said calmly. "I'll give you a chance to meet Rama."

Although he pretended to be a muddle-headed king, that was for outsiders to see.

No need to act before Dehya, right?

"Thank you, Candace."

Dehya hugged her friend, her face sympathetic.

She became more certain that her friend's situation was not good, likely similar to a beautiful dancer in the royal court who was favored by chance.

Even so, she still wanted to help her. Dehya couldn't help but be moved.

Candace's expression was gentle, "Helping you is good, though I can't guarantee Rama's true intentions."
