Capítulo 1: Chapter 1: Expectation

Expectation,

It was one of the things that defined Fang Yuan's second life. Anyone would think they were some chosen savior if they were reincarnated, even more so if it was in the webnovel of Reverend Insanity. This fantasy realm encompassed five continents with hundreds of billions of people. It was a world with two heavens, cultivation, and the potential of everlasting life. Fang Yuan must have been enamored with this place the moment he opened his eyes. He probably believed he was destined to become an immortal, achieving a state unimaginable on Earth. It must have been difficult to accept his reality as a bottom feeder in the society he thought he could triumph and rule over.

Fang Yuan's initial years in his small clan village were marked by praise for his remarkable intellect and insight. He astounded everyone by speaking at three months, walking at four months, and reciting poetry at the age of five. However, these were not his creations; in his previous life on Earth, Fang Yuan was a scholar who had memorized famous poems from his world and presented them as his own, thereby impressing the people in this new world with his supposed "talent" and "potential." Sadly, Fang Yuan's deception was eventually uncovered, revealing him to be an average individual. In the world of Reverend Insanity, early displays of intellect, strength, and wisdom signified a strong talent in cultivation. However, Fang Yuan did not possess the exceptional capabilities he had led others to believe.

In an ironic turn of events, Fang Yuan's brother, Fang Zheng, turned out to be the actual genius. He was an A-grade talent, the highest level of talent one could have in cultivation. In comparison, Fang Yuan was only a C-grade talent, the second lowest grade of talent a cultivator could have. Due to the expectations placed on Fang Yuan, many people were disappointed in him when the truth was revealed. The younger brother, who had always been inferior to him, suddenly switched their dynamic, bullying Fang Yuan and leading to him being kicked out of his home by his aunt and uncle. He was also scorned by the clan members who had once praised him for his genius. His life flipped on its head in a single day. It must have been a humbling experience for him, one that changed his entire outlook on life.

I wonder what he might have felt.

Because this felt terrible.

[Congratulations, you have awakened your aperture, would you like to do the tutorial?]

The floating hope Gu, the visual representation of a person's talent and value, were few in number and glowing dimly. The disappointment was inevitable. Half-hidden murmurs were whispered from the people in the crowd. But the worst part was the silence. Fang Zheng stood shocked, staring at me with dilated pupils, unable to accept what had just happened. The clan leader, Gu Yue Bo, shook his head and looked away. The two leaders of the Chi and Mo families had the same reaction, a glance toward their grandsons. They knew they still had a chance.

The whispers grew to the point of casual conversation.

"He was supposed to be the best prospect of this generation, how is it possible that he only has C-grade talent?"

"Without a strong talent this generation we'll fall behind the Bai clan in the standings."

"Every generation the bloodline grows weaker. All of the elders are already reaching middle age. The downfall of the clan is imminent."

"If we're not able to produce another A-grade talent the grip we have on Qing Mao Mountain will fade. If this continues…"

I could hear it in their voices. They were scared, they were scared that their clan had hit its peak and was on a spiraling decline. They were scared that if a new genius didn't appear, their status as the strongest clan on Qing Mao Mountain would be overruled. As they said, all their strongest cultivators were aging, and no new clansmen could replace them. I was the only highly anticipated person to come from this generation, and I had already failed.

It was funny. I wasn't even the original Fang Yuan, and I still felt bad that I let these people down.

I walked back to the entrance of the cave. No one greeted me, but that didn't matter, I wasn't Fang Yuan, this wasn't my clan, and these weren't my relatives. This wasn't my village and it certainly wasn't my home. These people didn't matter to me, and that wouldn't change, now or ever. This was just a fake world I happened to wake up in, if I had the choice, I wouldn't want to live another day here.

Still, since this was a game, the least I could do was have fun.

"Start the tutorial."

[It is recommended that you save the game after every significant change in cultivation. To quick save, say "Save Game."]

"Save game."

[Your progress has been saved in File 1. Would you like to rename this file?]

"No."

[You can now access your status window. To access it, say "Status."]

"Status."

[Fang Yuan]

[Class: N/A]

[Level 0]

[Age 15]

[Cultivation: Early Stage 1 (44%)]

[Gu: Spring Autumn Cicada (Vital Gu)]

[In your status window you can view your class, age, level, cultivation stage, and Gu. As you can see, you already have a Gu, Spring Autumn Cicada. To view more information, look at the icon for the Spring Autumn Cicada and say, "View Gu."]

"View Gu."

[Spring Autumn Cicada (Vital Gu)]

[Rank 6: Time Path]

[The Spring Autumn Cicada is a time-path immortal Gu that carries a Gu master's will and memories up the "River of Time." This can effectively make a person go back in time to a certain period. This Gu was created by Red Lotus in an attempt to escape the web of Fate Gu. It was later refined by Fang Yuan five hundred years in the future before he used it to travel back in time to when he was a teenager.]

[Since you cannot use the Spring Autumn Cicada Gu until it recovers, it is recommended that you find other Gu that are appropriate for your rank. Remember, you are stage 1, so try and find Gu of the same rank.]

[Other than finding Gu, there are many other important things to do. Increase your level, discover and explore the class system, accumulate achievements, earn money, and advance in cultivation. As you level up you can spend skill points to give yourself perks related to certain types of Gu, cultivation paths, refinement, Gu houses, and much more!]

"How do I finish the game?"

[You can't. The game doesn't have an ending.]

What?

"Fang Zheng, it's your turn."

Fang Zheng broke out of his state of shock, coming up to me and patting me on the back with a sorry smile. "I'm sorry Fang Yuan. I could've sworn you'd have A-grade talent."

I didn't respond. I looked at Fang Zheng, the brother of Fang Yuan, my new brother. My name was Fang Yuan now, a stage 1 cultivator of the Gu Yue clan. This was my identity in a world I could never escape from, playing a game that could never end, in a world so different from mine it was considered fantasy.

I could never accept this person as my brother, but I had to. What other choice did I have? I hugged him, a tight hug that caught him off-guard. He was surprised but looked at me with the warmth and love you'd expect between family members. It felt dirty, but I had to say it.

"Good luck Fang Zheng, I believe in you. Don't let them laugh at you, you're going to be someone special, you just have to believe in yourself."

Fang Zheng smiled. He probably didn't believe me, but only I knew how true my words were. This brother of mine was the only A-grade talent that the Gu Yue clan would produce this generation. I was just a C-grade talent, and the others would at most be B-grade talents, but Fang Zheng was truly exceptional. He was a person chosen by fate, and he would be the first of my victims.

I needed to earn experience one way or another, right?

Fang Zheng.

Bai Ning Bing.

Hei Lou Lan.

They were the largest sources of experience available to me in the early game.

"I really can't wait."

I had three years. Three years to get everything I needed before I left Qing Mao Mountain behind. The people who wanted me dead were all stage three or above, when the time came I needed to be beyond that. Stage four was the goal to aim for, even Fang Yuan couldn't do it in the original story, but I was confident I could.

"I know you're an A-grade talent, Fang Zheng, I just know it."

Fang Zheng lowered his head as if ashamed that he could never live up to my expectations.

"But if you weren't an A-grade talent, I definitely won't be."

"No, you will, just believe in yourself."

I pushed him out onto the field of flowers and watched the miracle happen. The second his foot touched the ground, dozens of hope Gu began to glow. He took one step, then two, then three, with every step the stage grew brighter, and he gained confidence. Fang Zheng moved forward, hitting ten, then twenty, then thirty. He had already surpassed me by a landslide. By this point, even Gue Yue Bo was shocked, his body shaking with excitement, and more importantly, hope. The future of the clan had appeared before his very eyes. I might not have been a genius, but Fang Zheng was. Fang Zheng had done the impossible, he continued walking, 40, 41, 42, and 43 steps. He stopped, and the entire cave roared with echoes of screaming.

"Fang Zheng," the academy elder said, "A-grade talent!"

I cheered with the rest of the people, loudly clapping for my "brother" as he rushed back to me with a flushed face, sweating and panting.

"You were right, I am an A-grade talent!" He hugged me with a giant smile, and I smiled back, albeit for a different reason.
