Chapter 9: Stilgar
Stilgar is a very important character in the film. He is the charismatic and pragmatic leader of the Sietch Tabr, one of the Fremen tribes on the desert planet Arrakis.
He is a deeply respected and seasoned warrior, Stilgar is known for his tactical mind and unwavering loyalty to his people.
He becomes a crucial ally to Paul Atreides in the movie and eventually recognizes Paul as the prophesied Lisan al-Gaib.
He is also the source of many memes and the comedic relief of the movie.
And as of right now he is traveling at the back of the giant sandworm to meet the so-called messiah. There were also many Fremen behind him, Fundamentalists who were deeply religious.
Duncan who was up above the desert sky turned the ornithopter around and headed back to Arrakeen to welcome Stilgar and his delegates.
On the gate of Arrakeen, Duncan unboarded the ornithopter and waited for Stilgar. After a few minutes, the sandstorm that was approaching them changed direction away from the city.
Then from the clad of dust pervasing the air, dozens of figure clothes in a strange desert suit came out. Their step hurried and fast.
"Stilgar!" Duncan greeted in a Fremen way. To which Stilgar nodded in response.
"Can I request an audience with the Duke?" Stilgar asked and Duncan answered.
"Absolutely, let's go right now." With that Duncan led the Fremen delegates into the castle and guided them towards the Duke's meeting room where Jake, Leto, Jessica, Paul, Thufir, and Gurney were waiting.
The door clung open and Duncan with Stilgar in tow entered the room.
"This is the leader of Sietch Tabr, my Duke, his name is Stilgar." Duncan Idaho introduced Leto. The latter then nodded and introduced himself.
"I am Leto Atreides, Duke of Arrakis. It's nice to finally meet you." Leto greeted. Their exchange of greetings didn't take long as Stilgar's eyes landed on Jake to which the latter reciprocated back with an equally intense stair.
"Tari a Lisan al-Gaib?" Stilgar asked specifically in chakobsa, the language of the Fremen to see if what the pilgrim said was true.
In translation this means "are you the Lisan Al-gaib?"
And Jake answered. "What if I am?" Which if translated in chakobsa is:
"Ma ihi akh?" A small gasp was heard from the Fremen, some of them even muttering "as written!".
However this was not enough, this was just one of the signs. But nonetheless it was still a sign.
"I have a proposition, are you willing to hear me out?" Jake asked. Stilgar pondered a bit, still a bit shocked and answered thereafter.
"What is it?"
"I will go with you in the desert and prove I am the Lisan Al-gaib. Do you accept it?" He voiced out and after a few seconds Stilgar answered with a little bit of excitement.
"I accept. Give him a stillsuit." Stilgar commanded one of his companions.
And from this point on Jake must prove that he is indeed the Lisan Al-gaib and get the Fremen to tale his side.
After giving his goodbyes to his family and friends, Jake alongside with Stilgar and his delegates walked out of Arrakeen and into the desert.
Stilgar gave him a stillsuit which is vital for his survival in the desert, when putting it on he was supposed to help Jake but the latter put it on effortlessly by himself without instructions as if he knew it from the start and has been accustomed to it.
'And he shall know the ways of the desert as if he was born from it' This single thought lingering on their mind as they watched Jake the entire time.
Unbeknownst to the Fremen this was not some divine manifestation of the prophecy but just the function of his skill Fremen Survival Way. Which is a skill that grants him the ability to know the ways of the desert as if he was born from it.
"Come, let us cross that crossing." After walking out of Arrakeen and walking for a few hours, Stilgar pointed at the seemingly ordinary vast desert.
This part of the desert is sandworm territory, that is why when they started crossing their steps became unusual, erratic, strange, and unsymmetrical.
The sand walk, also known as the "Fremen sandwalk" or "wormwalk," is a specialized method of moving across the desert employed by the Fremen of Arrakis. This technique is essential for survival in the harsh environment of the desert planet.
The primary purpose of the sand walk is to avoid attracting the giant sandworms that inhabit the deserts of Arrakis. Sandworms are highly sensitive to rhythmic vibrations on the surface of the sand, which they interpret as a potential prey or threat.
The sand walk involves walking with irregular, non-rhythmic steps to mimic the natural, chaotic patterns of the desert wind. This prevents the creation of rhythmic vibrations that would draw the attention of sandworms.
They were forged in the desert so the Fremen employed the sand walk as easy as breathing, however what caught them by surprise was Jake who was following them as naturally as everyone does.
He was using a sand walk like the rest of them, without any hitch or difficulty.
The rest of the Fremen kept murmuring at sight, some of them even chanting silent prayers. Once again Jake fulfilled one of the prophecies.
On some of the Fremen's mind they were already considering Jake the messiah.
After crossing the worm territory, all of them stopped. It was then Jake asked Stilgar.
"Are you done testing me?"
