Kai wanted to speak, but before the words could leave his mouth, he quickly looked around, as if trying to steady himself.
Hina might have sensed the reason behind his unease, but she didn't seem to care. Instead, her gaze stayed fixed on him, calm but almost probing.
Kai couldn't relax; the words caught in his throat as if something was preventing them from coming out. He felt trapped between his emotions and the need to confess something deeper.
But after a few moments, he finally managed to open his mouth.
Hina didn't interrupt him, curious to hear what her boyfriend had to say.
"Hina, I… I just want to thank you for being my girlfriend and for always supporting me, no matter what. I don't know what I'd do without you…" Kai's voice came out soft, almost embarrassed, as he scratched the back of his head, avoiding her direct gaze.
For a moment, Hina remained silent, her eyes widening slightly in surprise.
It was as if she hadn't expected those words, or maybe she was just processing the sincerity behind them.
Then, after what felt like an eternity to Kai, she let out a soft, affectionate laugh and locked eyes with him again.
"Oh? Really? That's what you wanted to tell me? Hahaha~ You're just too cute sometimes, you know?" she said in an almost teasing voice, her warmth wrapping around him like the first time they had spent time together.
Kai's heart raced, but not from nerves anymore.
Her laughter, the way she looked at him… it made everything feel lighter for a moment.
Still, something gnawed at the back of his mind.
He actually wanted to talk about Haruto, but he couldn't.
But for some reason, an instinctual feeling told him not to.
Not yet.
Something was holding him back, like a voice inside whispering it wasn't the right time.
He swallowed the tension, deciding to choose his words carefully.
It had been a while since Kai had said something so sweet to Hina, and he thought maybe now, in this quiet moment, was the perfect time to let that sentiment surface instead.
"Y-Yeah… I really wanted to say it, but I just couldn't find the right words… haha…" Kai replied, his voice still tinged with embarrassment.
Hina's eyes gleamed with amusement, but there was a subtle shift in her tone.
There was something darker, as if she were savoring the moment in a different way.
"You're just too adorable, Kai. So irresistible… so… innocent." Her words carried a subtle weight, like a predator speaking softly to its prey, a hint of danger lacing her voice.
Kai laughed nervously, feeling a strange heat rise to his cheeks.
"I-I'll take that as a compliment, hahaha." He said, with a nervous chuckle.
But Hina's gaze was sharper now, as if she were examining every inch of him, not just physically but emotionally.
Her eyes traced his features, searching for something… perhaps the truth hidden behind his flustered exterior.
It was almost as if she could sense he was holding something back.
For a fleeting moment, it felt like Hina was toying with him, testing him.
Maybe she already knew he wasn't telling her everything, and she was just waiting for him to slip up.
But after a few long, tense seconds, she seemed satisfied.
She tilted her head, her expression softening again with a lovely smile, as if giving him the benefit of the doubt.
Kai exhaled a quiet sigh of relief.
For now, he had dodged the bullet, but the weight of Haruto's presence still lingered in the back of his mind, casting a shadow over their conversation.
Kai and Hina stood close together on the terrace, basking in the warm glow of the fresh sun of that apparently normal day of school.
The tension between them had started to dissipate, replaced by a more familiar, affectionate atmosphere.
The crisp autumn air carried the distant sound of chattering students below, but up here, it was just the two of them, alone in their own little world.
Hina leaned in closer, her fingers brushing softly against Kai's hand.
Her touch was light, teasing, and sent a shiver up his spine.
She had a way of getting under his skin, making his heart race without even trying.
She glanced at him with that mischievous glint in her eyes, one that always left him unsure whether to laugh or melt into a puddle of nerves.
"You know," Hina said, her voice taking on that familiar playful tone, "you don't have to be so shy around me. We're a couple now, aren't we?"
Kai gulped, trying to steady himself.
His pulse was racing, and he could feel his face heating up. "Y-Yeah, I know," he stammered, fumbling for the right words.
Being with Hina always made him nervous in the best possible way.
But this time it wasn't Hina's fault.
He "lied" to her.
And he perfectly knew that Hina hated liars with all of her might.
Hina smiled, sensing his unease.
Before he could say anything more, she leaned in and pressed her lips against his, gently but purposefully.
The kiss was soft, barely more than a brush, but it was enough to leave Kai frozen in place, his face bright red since he wasn't expecting that.
Hina pulled back just as quickly, giggling at the sight of him, clearly flustered.
"See?" she teased, "You don't have to be so stiff with me."
Kai blinked, still processing the kiss.
He opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out at first. "Y-You're impossible," he finally muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, trying to shake off his embarrassment.
He clearly enjoyed that simple gesture of love, and at the same time he blushed because he felt something warm.
He felt Hina's genuine love once again in that kiss, enough to make him embarassed.
"And you love it," Hina quipped, giving him a playful wink before stepping back.
Just as Kai was about to respond, the sharp ring of the school bell echoed across the courtyard, signaling the end of their private moment.
It was time to get back to class.
Reality had a way of cutting through moments like this.
"I guess we should head back," Hina said, her voice still light but now more composed.
"Y-Yeah, I think it's time," Kai agreed, glancing toward the exit.
His heart was still pounding in his chest from the closeness they'd shared, but now there was also a gnawing anxiety creeping back in.
He still hadn't told Hina about Haruto, and the weight of that knowledge felt heavier with each passing minute.
As they descended the staircase and walked toward their respective classrooms, Kai's thoughts began to race again.
What if Haruto was actually planning something dangerous in the school? What if the encounter he'd had was with the same person he saw at the building and? But every time he tried to bring it up, something held him back.
Maybe it was the fear of burdening Hina, or perhaps it was the irrational hope that if he didn't speak it into existence, it would remain nothing more than a ghost in his mind.
The rest of the school day passed in a blur.
Kai went through the motions of each class, his body present but his mind elsewhere.
The teachers droned on about formulas, historical events, and grammar rules, but none of it registered.
All he could think about was the terrace, Haruto's mysterious appearance, and the uneasy feeling that had taken root in his chest.
When the final bell rang, signaling the end of the school day, Kai wasted no time.
He quickly gathered his belongings and made a beeline for the exit.
His feet moved on autopilot, his mind still swirling with questions and uncertainties.
He needed fresh air, a moment to collect himself and figure out what to do next.
But as he stepped out into the courtyard, he came to an abrupt halt.
Standing near the school gates, laughing together like old friends, were Hina and… Yuna.
Kai blinked in disbelief, his heart skipping a beat.
Hina and Yuna? Together? Talking? And not just talking, but laughing as if they were the best of friends? It didn't make sense.
After everything that had happened, after all the tension and the bad events, how could they be acting so… casual?
Kai felt a knot form in his stomach as he watched them.
He had never expected to see these two girls, who had once been at odds, now chatting so easily.
For a moment, he wondered if he had stumbled into an alternate reality.
Hina noticed him first and waved, her face lighting up with that same playful smile she always gave him.
"Kai!" she called out, her voice bright and cheerful. "We were just talking about you!"
Yuna turned her head to look at him, her expression soft and calm.
It was a stark contrast to the icy demeanor she had once shown him.
Her dark eyes, which had always been filled with suspicion or guardedness, now seemed open and… friendly?
Kai approached cautiously, still unsure of what was happening.
He felt like he had stepped into a dream, one where the usual rules no longer applied.
Yuna, who had once been so cold and distant, was now standing beside Hina, laughing and smiling as if they were the closest of friends.
And Hina, who had always been fiercely protective of her relationship with Kai, seemed perfectly at ease with Yuna's presence.
"Hey, Kai," Yuna greeted him, her voice warm and casual, as if they had never had any bad blood between them. "We were thinking… do you want to come hang out with us?"
Kai stared at her, his brain struggling to process the sudden shift in dynamics.
Yuna, the girl who had been kidnapped and was silent the whole time, was now inviting him to spend time with her and Hina as if they were all on friendly terms.
The silence stretched between them for a moment, and Kai's thoughts raced.
He glanced from Yuna to Hina, searching for some sign that this was all a joke or a trick.
But there was nothing.
The only thing he saw was only two smiling girls waiting for his answer.
"You… you want me to hang out with you two?" he finally asked, his voice tinged with disbelief.
Hina giggled and stepped forward, looping her arm through his.
"Of course, silly. Why wouldn't we? We're all friends here, right?" She shot him a look that was both teasing and sincere, her eyes sparkling with amusement.
Kai didn't know what to say.
He had never imagined a scenario where Hina and Yuna would be on such good terms, let alone inviting him to join them like this.
But there they were, standing together, looking at him expectantly.
In that moment, Kai realized that his world was shifting in ways he hadn't anticipated.
The tension that had once existed between Hina and Yuna seemed to have evaporated, leaving behind something new and strange friendship that he wasn't sure he understood yet.
As he stood there, caught between confusion and curiosity, Kai nodded slowly, unsure of what he was getting himself into.
"Yeah… sure," he said, his voice steady despite the whirlwind of thoughts in his mind. "Let's go."
And then, with a mischievous smile by Hina, the three of them started to walk.
Yuna suggested to go into a nearby place that used to do very good ice creams.
The place was called "The factory of Sweetness".
She said that it opened recently and that the things they served were incredibly good and nice.
Hina and Kai nodded at her request, probably not knowing where else to go.
Every single place seemed to recall a bad memory in Kai's mind, so a new place where he could make good memories would've been a great idea.
More than that, Hina loved ice cream.
So that was a perfect choice.
