Organising the Army (1)

After having his breakfast, the table was cleared and Jon was ready to proceed further with his plans.

Jon turned his head towards the two unsullied guards standing on the gate and gave them a nod.

A middle aged man dressed in the complete black uniform of the Unsullied flanked by one man on his each side walked inside the hall.

He approached near Jon and went on one knee, "My Lord."

Jon nodded, "Get up."

The man got up while Jon said, "So you are the person who has been chosen as the leader among my army?"

The man nodded, "Yes, My Lord."

Jon studied the man very carefully. He appeared to be around 30 years of age. Like all the unsullied, his hair was trimmed as small as possible. He had broad shoulders and well defined muscles indicating the hard training he had been going for years.

Jon said, "What is your name?"

The man smiled and said almost with pride, "With Lord's grace, I have decided to take up a free name. A name of my choice, the first act of my freedom. I am Freydron."

Jon also smiled in response acknowledging the name. He said, "I believe you are not one of those whom I was supposed to buy. After all, since they were being sold for the first time they must be of young age."

Freydron nodded in affirmation, "Yes, My Lord. I was the trainer for group you were supposed to buy. After a lot of deliberation and arguments, all the soldiers came to an agreement about me their representative."

Jon gazed at him contemplating, "How are your skills in a fight, Freydron?"

The man almost puffed his chest, "My Lord, not to brag but I am among the best when it comes to spears. I have been turning soldiers since I was 20. I have trained thousands of men for wars. 12 years later, I can pridefully say that there were only few men who could have matched or overshadowed me in a duel."

Jon knew that whatever Freydron was telling was most likely to be true. To be chosen among thousands of men was no small feat. If he had not been as good as Freydron claimed to be, he would have never been standing here.

Jon chuckled in amusement, "We will see that. But at least for now more than your fighting skills, I require your leadership qualities."

"Since you have been a trainer before, that may help you with commanding an army this vast," added Jon further.

Jon got up from his seat, "Come with me. We have a lot to discuss."

Jon walked ahead with Slyvia and Jelerion following just behind him. Behind them was Freydron.

Jon walked for some time to reach the solar of the previous master. This room was going to serve as a temporary solar for Jon.

Jon walked inside the solar. The walls of the solar was lined with wooden shelves filled with various documents and thick tomes of books.

At the end directly opposite the gate was a large wooden table. Behind the table was a large wooden chair with various intricate patterns and design carved on it. Jon took his seat on the wooden chair.

Slyvia and Jelerion walked and stood behind Jon on his right and left hand side respectively.

"Take a seat, Freydron," said Jon.

The newly chosen leader of the army nodded and took his seat.

"No doubt the men who have decided to join me, formerly called the Unsullied slaves, are among one of the best army in the entire known world," said Jon. "But to achieve what I have in mind this is not sufficient."

Freydron listened very intently what Jon was trying to say.

Jon continued, "We not only need bravery, skill and discipline which you all have in abundance but also a proper organisational structure."

"Without proper leadership and solid organisational structure, great armies have fallen," said Jon. "So, I have decided to revamp how my army would operate. This structure would serve as the foundational basis for my army even after it expands."

Jon picked up an empty parchment placed on the table.

Jon scribbled in big and bold letters number '20' on the parchment.

"It is believed that a human can maintain proper a communication with around two dozen people. It will be the size of the smallest squad our army would operate in," said Jon. "Among these 20 men, one will function as their leader who will be designated the post of squad captain and another man will be his deputy called Deputy Squad Captain."

With this he drew a hyphen next to 20 and wrote SQUAD CAPTAIN.

In the next line, Jon wrote 20×5, "5 such groups will form a division. It totals to 100 soldiers. The division will be headed by a Captain."

With this Jon drew another hyphen next to 20×5 and wrote CAPTAIN (DIVISION) in front of it.

In the next line Jon wrote, D×5, "5 such division will form a Group headed by a Group Captain. 5 Captains each having 100 men under their command will function below the Group captain."

With this Jon drew another hyphen and wrote GROUP CAPTAIN (COMPANY) next to D×5.

"You can see that under a Group Captain, he has 500 soldiers and 5 Captains," said Jon. "This will be called a Company."

The other three occupants in the room were listening very intently to Jon.

Even Freydron was pleasantly surprised. For 12 years he had been training men and he was very well aware of the workings and in and out of an army.

It was not as if a hierarchy of commands did not exist in the army. But in a society like theirs no one proper structure of army existed. Most rulers and Lords depended on their vassals for a large part of their army supplies.

This led to complex problems during a war campaign. During campaigns the chain command turned very complex with a lot people putting their stakes on to higher hierarchy leading to disastrous situations in communication and decision making.

Freydron gazed with complete attention towards Jon waiting for him continue.
