Chapter 7: The Production Report

**Los Angeles – Friday, January 28, 10 AM**

**Susan's Perspective**

The tranquility of the morning permeates the production space. Daylight filters through the expansive windows, casting a glow upon the rows of printers and workstations. Over the past week, significant changes have unfolded. William, the newly appointed director, assumed leadership of Majestic Publishing following the tragic passing of his parents. Youthful, unseasoned, and lacking formal training, an air of uncertainty hangs like a persistent fog.

Taking my place at my desk, production documents spread before me, I prepare for the pivotal task ahead. Today, I must present William with a report of utmost importance. The company stands on precarious ground. Sales have plummeted for two consecutive years, our premier authors have departed, and budgetary constraints have dampened team morale. William bears a weighty burden of expectation.

Rising from my seat, I traverse the production department. Employees, immersed in their tasks, offer fleeting glances as I pass. Machines hum softly, punctuating the quietude. William's arrival elicited murmurs of skepticism. A young inheritor devoid of experience, they whispered. I too harbored reservations, yet opted to reserve judgment, affording him the benefit of doubt.

Halting before William's office door, I draw a deep breath, murmuring reassurances to bolster my resolve. "You've got this, Susan. You can do it." A soft rap heralds my entry. William sits behind his desk, engrossed in paperwork, weariness etched upon his features.

"Good morning, Susan. Thank you for coming," William greets with a shy smile, his fatigue palpable.

"Good morning, William. Your report is prepared," I respond, taking my seat across from him, briefcase poised on the desk.

As I begin to unfold the contents, I steal another breath to steady my nerves.

"As per your request, I've compiled a comprehensive report detailing our current production capabilities, associated costs, and recommendations for enhancing efficiency and product quality," I articulate, initiating the presentation.

Commencing with an overview of our present predicament and the formidable challenges we confront—underutilized printers, soaring material expenses, and relentless market competition—I set the stage for what lies ahead.

"Presently, we produce approximately 22,000 books daily. However, we possess the capacity to escalate to 100,000 copies per day, contingent upon additional staffing. This presents an opportunity to reduce unit costs by bolstering production volume. Furthermore, our production workshops occupy a mere 30% of the ground floor, signifying significant growth potential," I expound, observing William's attentive demeanor.

Acknowledging my observations, William nods thoughtfully, pen poised over notepad.

Transitioning to the technical intricacies of materials and machinery, I delve into our current practices and propose alternatives.

"With regards to materials, our reliance on Sulfite paper and Flexographic inks, industry standards since the 1970s, warrants reassessment," I continue, noting William's inquisitive expression.

"How is it that these materials have endured for so long without advancement?" William queries, his awareness surprising.

"Sigh... The prominent paper conglomerates have heavily invested in these materials, stifling competition and impeding innovation. Those who dared challenge the status quo floundered, their endeavors quashed. However, I maintain that a departure from tradition is imperative to distinguish ourselves and reignite sales," I express, a tinge of frustration evident.

"And what do you propose?" William inquires, his curiosity piqued.

Following a moment's reflection, I respond, "After thorough research, I advocate for the adoption of acid-free paper for its superior print quality and durability, offset paper for its versatility, and alternative inks such as latex for enhanced flexibility and resilience."

Grateful for my insights, William expresses his gratitude and outlines his directives.

"Thank you for your diligence. I request that you identify viable suppliers producing soy and oil-based inks, as well as acid-free and offset paper. Targets with valuations under 20 million would be preferable. I trust you to oversee this acquisition promptly," William articulates, exuding confidence.

As I weigh his instructions, hesitant to voice dissent, William reassures me.

"Don't concern yourself with finances, Susan. I entrust you to liaise with the accounting department and Karl to expedite this endeavor. Leave the rest to me," he asserts, his resolve unwavering.

Accepting his directive, I nod in agreement, resolved to fulfill my duty. "I will attend to it immediately. Thank you for your unwavering support and trust," I affirm.

"Thank you, Susan. Your contribution is indispensable to our success. Let us continue to collaborate in revitalizing Majestic Publishing," William concludes, his optimism infectious.

Departing his office, a medley of emotions courses through me—relief, determination, doubt, and apprehension. Yet, I have chosen to extend William the benefit of the doubt. Only time will unveil whether he is a pretentious scion or a visionary leader.
