Chapter 339: Mr.Hastur's Change of Heart Regarding Roselle

I actually went to knock on Audrey's window in the middle of the night...

I knocked for quite a while, disturbing both Audrey and Susie...

Early in the morning, shortly after waking up,Hastur recalled the absurd events of the previous night and covered his face in embarrassment.

Fortunately, when Audrey opened the window, he regained his senses and quickly slipped away, preventing her from seeing who was knocking on her window so late at night.

If Audrey had seen his face clearly, it would have been utterly mortifying.

"I'd better not visit Audrey today, in case Susie recognizes me,"Hastur thought.

Susie...

Realizing a crucial point,Hastur hurriedly got up and went to the bathroom to take a bath, adding extra perfume.

Susie's keen sense of smell was formidable, so he had to wash away last night's scent while he was still clearheaded.

After soaking for half an hour and freshening up,Hastur emerged from the bathroom.

The maids waiting outside wore curious expressions, whichHastur ignored as he passed by.

Instead of going downstairs for breakfast, he first went to his study. Taking out paper and pen, he listed some precautions.

After last night's incident,Hastur had a general understanding of his current condition:

- Due to recently consuming a magical potion, he would experience periods of chaotic behavior in the short term, easily doing things out of character

- During these chaotic states, his rationality would be suppressed, and he wouldn't realize anything was amiss until regaining clarity later

- To overcome this, he could use the power of the Hall of Stars to forcefully suppress the chaos when it was about to take over

- Alternatively, he could let it run its course, as it was only a temporary side effect that would resolve in 10-15 days

Hastar quickly thought through these points while still lucid. To avoid irreparable actions while in a chaotic state, he planted psychological suggestions deep in his subconscious of things to avoid.

However, as he wasn't a Spectator pathway beyonder, simple psychological suggestions might not be enough to remind him.

"Should I ask Audrey for help?"Hastur pondered, but realized her intelligence would likely lead her to deduce he was last night's window-knocker.

"Maybe I could try asking Susie? Though that seems unreliable."

Hastar spent half an hour in his study before going down for breakfast. Seeing it was after 8 AM, he decided to spend the morning in his study to avoid odd behavior.

As time passed without the chaotic feeling descending,Hastur grew anxious, hoping no one would visit.

Around 9:30 AM, butler Neil knocked on the study door.

"My lord, Miss Audrey is here to visit. She's waiting in the drawing room downstairs."

"I'll be right down. Please have some refreshments prepared and sent to the study later."

After Neil left,Hastur took a few deep breaths before heading downstairs, acting as if nothing had happened.

Audrey greeted him with a smile: "Mr.Hastur, I hope I'm not intruding."

"You're always welcome, Miss Audrey,"Hastur replied, also greeting Susie beside her. Susie barked in response.

After some small talk,Hastur invited Audrey up to his study. As they climbed the stairs, Susie suddenly sniffed atHastur's trouser cuffs intently.

Hastar maintained his composure outwardly but felt a bit panicked inside. Could Susie's keen nose really detect that he was last night's visitor?

Fortunately, Susie didn't seem to notice anything and returned to Audrey's side.

Once in the study with the door closed, Audrey said mysteriously: "Mr.Hastur, I think I encountered a bat-man last night!"

She described in detail what she had seen and heard, embellished with her imagination.

Bat-man? Miss Audrey, you have quite the imagination to conjure up such a fictional creature from horror stories,Hastur thought to himself.

Maintaining a polite smile, he said, "I've never encountered a bat-man myself. Perhaps they're active in the Southern Continent."

Audrey's eyes widened slightly. "Mr.Hastur, do bat-men really exist?"

Hastar chuckled lightly. "What people call 'bat-men' may just be unusually large bats. In the dim light of night, it's easy for people to misinterpret what they see and let their imagination run wild."

Audrey considered this seriously, frowning. "I also don't think that figure looked like a bat-man. It seemed more like a person."

Hastar's heart skipped a beat. He briefly averted his gaze from Audrey, only to meet Susie's knowing look.

"If it were really a bat-man, it should have flown away when startled, not fallen to the ground and run off into the night like a person," Audrey analyzed.

She then lowered her voice and asked, "You don't think someone was sneaking around my house at night to peep, do you?"

"Who would be that bored?"Hastur replied calmly.

Audrey thought about it and agreed that no one would be so foolish. Perhaps the figure she saw was just some strange creature from the deep forest that had wandered near her house.

Dropping the subject, Audrey inquired aboutHastur's experiences in South Weil County.

Hastar felt relieved and began sharing his observations in detail, hoping to occupy the conversation until Audrey's visit concluded.

"How is my second brother doing?" Audrey asked.

"Lord Alfred is quite fond of life in South Weil County. He says the climate is much more pleasant than the Southern Continent,"Hastur replied, going on to discuss Alfred's business ventures.

Audrey listened attentively, a sweet smile on her face. She had worried her second brother was staying away from Backlund out of spite towards their eldest brother. If he had found a suitable path in South Weil County, she could rest easy.

After discussing this, Audrey steered the conversation to Roselle's diary. Though she had been acquiring entries recently, the process was slowing down.

Just asHastur was about to respond, chaos suddenly flooded his mind, beginning to erode his lucid thoughts.

He froze for several seconds. Prompted by Audrey's gentle call, he instinctively answered: "Roselle was a person with an extremely chaotic private life. The more you learn about him, the closer your idealized image of him comes to shattering."

Audrey asked curiously, "Is this Mr.Hastur's latest research finding?"

"Heh, before his rise to power, Roselle frequently mingled at noble parties. His private life was a mess - noble ladies, mature married women, he refused no one. Oh, and he was even admired by several male nobles."

Audrey's cheeks flushed slightly as she gaveHastur a reproachful look. How could he say such things in front of her?

Yet she found it oddly intriguing and wanted to hear a bit more. Just a little bit.

Susie, lying at Audrey's feet, also perked up her ears attentively.

"Besides his many faults in his private life, he wasn't great in other areas either. Standing on the shoulders of giants, he plagiarized many works that weren't his own."

"What?" Audrey exclaimed in surprise. Even Susie let out a bark.

What new discoveries had Mr.Hastur made in South Weil County? He seemed to have completely changed his opinion of Emperor Roselle for the worse.

Audrey asked softly, "Mr.Hastur, are you feeling alright?"

Hastar smiled at Audrey. "I'm fine."

He got up from behind his desk and sat next to Audrey on the sofa, reaching down to pet Susie's head.

"Susie, next time I'll give you some of Hermes' works. He was a master of mysticism in the realm of the mind and even studied mental dragons. His writings can help you better understand and learn psychology."

"Woof!" Susie perked up immediately, very interested in psychology.

Sitting besideHastur, Audrey hesitated to speak. Her cheeks flushed slightly - she also wanted to read the works of the mysterious master Hermes.

He was the great figure who created the Ancient Hermes language, essentially the guiding light for humanity in the field of mysticism.

But she was embarrassed to admit she was on the same level as Susie.

"If there's a chance in the future, I'll have Hermes give you some private lessons,"Hastur casually dropped another bombshell.

"Woof!" Susie wagged her tail happily.

Audrey was stunned. "Mr.Hastur, is Master Hermes still alive?"

"As a master in the field of mysticism, he's naturally a powerful beyonder. How could he die so easily? He's just living under a new identity."

Audrey realized this made sense and felt a surge of excitement. If such a legendary figure really came to give Susie private lessons, she would definitely find a way to audit them.

It didn't make sense to teach a dog and bypass the owner, right? It should be her private lessons that Susie audited.

Wait a minute, was Mr.Hastur acting a bit differently today compared to usual? Audrey blinked and narrowed her eyes, beginning to observe today's Mr.Hastur carefully.
