Capítulo 10: Chapter 9 Three Feedings

Traductor: 549690339

Zhang Tianyao's brows were knitted with solemnity as he descended the stairs, his brothers all watching him.

Huizi said, "Hey, you didn't do anything to our Teacher Xu, did you?"

Before Zhang Tianyao could answer, Cen Ye had already spoken, "Does he have the guts?"

Zhang Tianyao: "Go to hell!" As he walked past Cen Ye, he snatched two cookies from the stash Cen Ye had just hidden away, chomped on them fiercely, then leaned against the wall. Despite the gleam in his eyes, he said with a grave tone, "Before I knew it, I confessed my feelings."

"Wow—" Everyone started to howl in shock.

"Damn, are you really in heat, making a move so fast?"

"Did she accept you?" Zhao Tan asked.

With a look of time-worn wisdom, Zhang Tianyao gazed up—for a moment, at the ceiling—then pressed a hand to his forehead and said indifferently, "Not yet. She said only the person who wins the Xiangcheng championship is worthy of pursuing her."

To Xu Xunsheng, Zhang Tianyao's confession didn't stir a ripple in her heart. Love may be an elusive sentiment, but the absence of love is completely clear. Zhang Tianyao had his merits: he was cheerful, passionate, and had talent, but in Xu Xunsheng's eyes, he was too frivolous, and at 22, a year younger than her, she couldn't see how such a boy could have a mature understanding and commitment to love. He might have been enchanted by her appearance and felt a novelty towards her personality, but that was it.

Xu Xunsheng knew that liking someone could happen easily, but love did not.

As the sky gradually darkened, Xu Xunsheng felt a bit hungry and suddenly wondered if that guy Cen Ye had dinner today. Being with his brothers, he probably wouldn't starve.

Xu Xunsheng ordered some takeout.

It was almost the end of the day's training when Zhang Hai finally arrived. He exchanged a few pleasantries with Xu Xunsheng, but she hadn't liked him much since yesterday, finding him a bit slippery and unreliable, so she responded only with brief courtesies.

During yesterday's performance at Heika Bar, her attention had been captured by Cen Ye, and she only recalled that Zhang Hai played the keyboard quite well. After joining his performance today, she listened for a while, and indeed, he had some flashy skills. But compared to Cen Ye's singing and Zhang Tianyao's guitar, it clearly lacked soul. His technique was also a notch below Zhao Tan's, on the same level as Huizi's.

But a band couldn't possibly be flawless in every aspect.

They practiced until past seven, and when they came up to say goodbye to Xu Xunsheng, Zhang Tianyao didn't show his usual warmth. He lagged behind with Cen Ye, simply watching her from a distance. This actually pleased Xu Xunsheng, enjoying the peace and quiet.

After they had gone far away, Xu Xunsheng picked up a broom, intending to clean the downstairs area, thinking the boys must have made a mess after a whole day of antics. To her surprise, she found that the tables and chairs had been neatly arranged and all the trash was in the garbage bin by the corner, except for some small scraps.

The instruments were all put back in their places, and plugs were properly organized—neat and orderly. Xu Xunsheng felt content, put down the broom, went over, and touched the instruments. She stopped in front of the guitar that Cen Ye had used—the main singer Xun Zhi had also used it. She plucked a string gently, and a clear sound flowed out. Finally, she arrived at the keyboard and, thinking about the tunes Zhang Hai had just played, Xu Xunsheng smiled contemptuously.

Perhaps it was their performance that day which left her feeling a sense of loss, or maybe watching band practice reminded her of past events. Now, with the surrounding silence so intense it felt lonely, Xu Xunsheng, as if driven by some unknown force, sat down at the keyboard, plugged it in, and began to play.

It was Chaomu Band's opening song from the night before, a tune she had heard Cen Ye sing several times. She started to play it on the keyboard from memory; at first, it was a bit unfamiliar, she might have even hit a few wrong notes, but soon she was playing fluently. The feeling was distant, foreign, yet familiar. Xu Xunsheng's smile slowly widened, as she played on, picking up speed, faster than their own performance's rhythm, maybe even adding a few impromptu varying melodies. After the climax, it became smoother and more melodious. Xu Xunsheng knew it was a bright emotion, yet also a melancholic one—it was embedded in the piece Cen Ye had written, and she could feel it.

As the piece ended, after the splendid cascade of notes, she dropped her hands and sat silently at the keyboard, overwhelmed by the profound stillness around her.

Then she looked up and saw that guy, standing on the staircase.
