Chapter 83: Uncontrolled Wind
Even Alice, who lacked understanding of the ocean, could sense the brewing storm in the air.
However, in her area of expertise, Alice perceived something else.
Without greeting the sailors, she ran to the edge of the deck, stood on tiptoes leaning outward, and squinted at the water's surface.
"What are you doing?!" A sailor hurriedly grabbed Alice, fearing she would fall overboard.
"Call someone skilled at underwater combat," Alice said, gazing at the water, "or get your captain."
"But..." The sailor opened his mouth, still intent on pulling Alice away.
"If we wait for the brewing disaster to fully form, it'll be too late." Alice's eyes remained fixed on the water's surface.
It was a strange sensation. She could clearly detect something underwater that was adding an uncomfortable feeling to the area.
The feeling wouldn't cause her actual harm, but it filled her with unease. If she had to compare it to something, it was like air with 99% humidity - you can't see the water hidden in the air, but every breath gives you a suffocating sensation of being enveloped in water.
Alice closed her eyes, trying to dispel the feeling.
...She couldn't. She still couldn't.
It was always like this - she could see it, feel it, but she just couldn't influence it in any way.
Alice frowned in frustration and turned to look at Alger, who had been called over. Without waiting for him to speak, she said directly: "What I'm looking for is underwater."
"Are you sure?" Alger came closer, looking at the unremarkable water surface. "We should still be some distance from that area."
"...Not seeing them on deck already exceeds my expectations," Alice replied, her tone betraying her agitation. "You should know, that Charles King nearly became an extraordinary characteristic falling into my mouth."
Alger was silent for a moment, then suddenly asked: "Is the angel behind him worried about becoming your potion ingredient?"
"...A hypothesis worth considering," Alice affirmed Alger's guess. "So, why haven't you jumped in yet?"
"...Even as a 'Sailor', I don't particularly want to fight underwater," Alger explained. "Do you have a way to lure them up?"
"If I were Sequence 6 now, maybe I would," Alice said wistfully.
"Then can you pinpoint their exact location?" Alger continued asking.
"I can, but I can't tell you," Alice shrugged. "Unless you have a way for me to move underwater... then I could lead you there."
Before Alger could speak, Alice added: "But I'm not good at underwater... well, I'm not very good at fighting on land either."
Wordlessly, Alger handed Alice a cufflink.
"What's this?" Alice took it, glanced at the sunless sky, and lowered her hand in disappointment.
"A magical item that allows you to move underwater," Alger explained.
"...Shouldn't you confirm if I can protect myself in water first? You're just taking me down like this?" Alice questioned Alger's mysterious trust.
"...Well, can you?" Alger played along, asking for some unknown reason.
"Probably not," Alice put on the cufflink, supporting herself on the railing with one hand. She stood on tiptoe, gesturing to indicate her height. "But I probably won't die."
"You're going to jump directly?" Alger was somewhat startled, realizing Alice's intention.
"Doesn't it feel more appropriate this way?" Alice blinked. "I think at this moment I should shout 'you jump, I jump'..."
"What is that... Hey!" Before Alger could finish speaking, Alice unexpectedly flipped over the railing, falling into the water and smoothly disappearing beneath the surface.
As Alger had said, wearing the cufflink indeed gave Alice the ability to move in water - not that she actually learned to swim, but she achieved the basics of swimming: she wouldn't sink.
More importantly, of course, it allowed her to breathe underwater.
Closing her eyes, the source of the discomfort became clearer. Before Alger, who had jumped in after her, could say anything, Alice grabbed him and pointed towards the bottom of the ship.
Alger frowned, grabbed Alice, and took her closer to the ship's bottom.
When they had descended deep enough and Alger was about to swim over with Alice, she suddenly had an intuition. Instinctively, she yanked Alger hard.
After Alger turned his head, Alice shook her head vigorously twice, then pulled him and pointed towards the surface.
— While doing this, Alice kept wondering if Alger thought she was crazy.
But Alger seemed to have a blind trust in her - Alice suspected he had taken her random nonsense seriously, like her claim of being a walking true god or something...
In any case, Alger took her back to the surface without any doubt.
Then, the moment they emerged, they were caught up by a fierce wind.
— Along with them, two half-man-high snakes with horns on their heads were also swept up.
It was her potion ingredient!
But Alice, being swept up into the sky by the wind, was in no mood to be happy.
When underwater, Alice had a strange premonition - this storm had already spiraled out of these two snakes' control.
Why? Was it because of her approach?
No one knew the answer.
Alice and Alger, along with the two Manovah snakes, were slammed hard onto the deck by the wind.
This didn't mean they were safe.
This ferocious wind showed no sign of stopping, seemingly intent on capsizing the entire ship.
...Damn it!
Alice, propelled by the wind, crashed next to one of the snakes. Quick as lightning, she grabbed the snake's horns, trying to break them off.
The snake, still alive, naturally wouldn't allow Alice to do this. Its huge mouth bit down mercilessly on Alice's outstretched shoulder.
Fortunately, it's a non-venomous snake... Alice thought, her face pale with excruciating pain.
After Alice gritted her teeth and broke off one horn, she successfully gained the upper hand in this struggle.
The Manovah snake's bite weakened considerably, and Alice took the opportunity to break off the other horn.
She collapsed on the ground, exhausted. Her spirituality silently permeated the pair of horns, touching the uncomfortable feeling that had been in the air all along.
As expected... Even as her spirituality was rapidly depleting and the pain in her shoulder had become almost numb, Alice couldn't help but feel elated - it seemed she could finally influence fate in a truly meaningful way.
