Chapter 80: Alice's Flag
Audrey and Alger exchanged glances and shook their heads, saying, "We don't know."
"A naked man crucified upside down on a cross, his body covered in blood?" Alice repeated with a strange expression.
She was all too familiar with this image - wasn't it the father of that unfortunate child? Although Alice had long suspected a connection between the True Creator and the Silver City's Creator, she hadn't expected the Silver City to actually have an idol of the True Creator.
"Miss 'Fate', do you know about this?" Derrick quickly asked, realizing Alice might have seen a similar image before.
Audrey and Alger also looked at Alice.
"I think you'd better ask Mr. Fool about this question..." Alice responded wearily.
Hearing Alice's words, the three turned their gaze to Klein in the gray fog. Klein took the cue and answered, "This is the 'Fallen Creator'."
Upon hearing this, Derrick frowned uncomfortably, while Alger and Audrey showed expressions of understanding.
Alice pondered for a moment before adding to Derrick, "We have another name for the 'Fallen Creator' - the 'True Creator'. He governs the 'Priest of Concealment' pathway, of which Sequence 5 is the previously mentioned 'Shepherd'."
When Alice mentioned "Shepherd", Derrick suddenly sat up straight, his eyes showing obvious surprise.
Seeing Derrick's expression, Alice smiled, "You have a 'Shepherd' near you, don't you?"
Derrick's expression gave Alice her answer. She leaned back in her chair without saying more, leaving Alger and Audrey, who had been hoping she would probe for more information about the Silver City, to look at each other in bewilderment.
In the ensuing silence, Klein in the gray fog chuckled softly, "Let's end this gathering here."
"Your will is our desire," Audrey immediately stood up, curtsied, and the others followed suit.
After the gathering, Alice received the latest entry of Roselle's diary.
"January 14th: I've discovered an issue - high-sequence items without consciousness, if not sealed, unconsciously attract low-sequence beings of the same pathway to their vicinity, creating intersections. The higher the original sequence, the more likely this is to occur.
However, this phenomenon doesn't seem to be constant, but rather intermittent."
Huh?
This diary entry immediately piqued Alice's interest.
So, my chance encounter with that Mercury Snake might have been due to this? I wonder which of us was attracting the other...
But wait, that doesn't add up. If that were the case, wouldn't those three years have been too uneventful?
Putting the question aside for now, Alice continued reading.
"January 16th: The taste of a witch is quite exquisite indeed."
What?
Hold on, what's this about?
Even with her suspicions about this transmigrator senior's character, this still shocked Alice a bit.
After all, as far as she knew, Emperor Roselle had copied quite a few famous works describing assassins...
Surely he wasn't trying to trick more people into following the "Assassin" pathway to become witches?
Huh?
Emperor Roselle, didn't you have any psychological barriers knowing they were originally men?
With mixed feelings, Alice continued reading.
"January 20th: I've completed the second Blasphemy Card.
Let me think, let me think, where should I hide it?
Ah, I plan to disguise it as a bookmark, tucked inside a very valuable book. If the finder isn't destined for it, they'll hardly imagine that in a book of considerable value, the most valuable item is actually that inconspicuous bookmark!
Not bad, this idea is not bad at all!"
The Blasphemy Card!
Alice's heart briefly raced, but when she realized Emperor Roselle hadn't specified the exact location, it returned to its normal pace in disappointment.
The Blasphemy Cards contained information on the potion for advancing from Sequence 1 to Sequence 0. Alice suspected that Sequence 0 potions from different pathways had commonalities.
She needed to understand exactly what relationship existed between her potion and the Mercury Snake's.
...
On Monday evening, Alice finally met Evelyn, who had reportedly "fallen ill after encountering thugs."
"Are you alright? I heard you... encountered some unpleasant events?" Alice asked with concern as she examined Evelyn.
Evelyn's complexion was better than Alice had expected. To be blunt, she didn't look like someone who had just recovered from a serious illness.
"Oh..." Reminded by Alice, Evelyn quickly recalled that terrifying night. The smile on her face became forced, "It was truly frightening... I hope it never happens again."
Still somewhat concerned about that night's events, but relatively calm when mentioning it. It seems the church's consolation was indeed trustworthy.
After quietly comforting Evelyn for a few sentences, Alice subtly steered the conversation in another direction.
This meeting successfully brought some changes to Alice's dreams that night.
When Alice awoke from her dream, sitting at the table drawing comics with Brier Rose's face, she was still a bit confused.
...Why would a Nighthawk from Backlund come into my dream?
The Nighthawk walked into the room naturally and asked, "How do you know Evelyn Greenland?"
Alice instantly understood why they had come.
Evelyn Greenland was still under surveillance, and the church hoped to use her to lure out that wild non-human.
They... they had guessed that she knew Evelyn!
No, not guessed... In fact, the things she had said to Evelyn were too straightforward. Combined with her following Evelyn, the church should be able to determine that she not only knew Evelyn, but that Evelyn's fate had been affected because of her...
Recalling the speculations of "Justice" and "The Hanged Man" at the Tarot Gathering, Alice realized that they had probably ruled out the possibility of a powerful being passing by and attributed the cause to her.
As for Klein manipulating "The World" to speak... Ha, if such things were possible, she would be a true god walking on earth!
Alice "I'm definitely not a true god" Kingsley answered truthfully, "I met her when I visited Mrs. Greenland next door."
"What's your name?" the other party continued.
"Brier Rose," Alice answered without hesitation.
"Why did you come to Backlund?" they pressed on.
The topic gradually shifted towards an area Alice wasn't adept at, but to play the role of someone in a controlled dream well, Alice still answered, "Dad... Dad's business ran into trouble, and Mom also..."
Alice let herself show obvious sadness and grief.
The other party indeed didn't dwell on this topic and asked again, "How did you become a non-human?"
I went to ask for New Year's money back (looking away).
