Chapter 52: Farewell, Fat Pharmacist

"What's wrong?" Alice, who had just changed her appearance, looked at Kaspar.

"Nothing, follow me." Kaspar quickly recovered from his surprise and led Alice away.

Alice limped after Kaspar through the bar's kitchen, into the back alley, and around to a dark, unlit house.

Kaspar signaled Alice to stay put, then stepped forward and knocked on the door in a specific rhythm.

Even if unintentionally, Alice's extraordinary mechanical abilities allowed her to remember the rhythm Kaspar used—though she doubted it would be useful.

Seven or eight seconds later, a small wooden panel on the door suddenly slid open, revealing a pair of brown eyes peering out from inside.

After scrutinizing them for a moment, the door swung open, and a man wearing a similar iron mask appeared. He tossed Alice a hooded robe and hoarsely asked Kaspar, "Didn't I tell you not to bring anyone here recently?"

"She found us on her own, somehow got the information. And she's like you guys, I had no choice..." Kaspar explained.

The man frowned at Alice, who had already donned the hood. Noticing his gaze, Alice calmly lifted her head and responded, "Consider me lucky."

The man gave Alice a cold glance, realizing it wouldn't be wise to drive her away at this moment. He vented his anger on Kaspar instead: "Next time, inform me in advance, or else, hmph!"

Then he shut the door, turned around, and led Alice through the dark living room into a first-floor sitting room.

The only light source in the sitting room was a candle on the coffee table, its dim glow insufficient to illuminate the entire room. A few hooded and masked individuals sat around in the dim light, resembling a scene from an unknown cult gathering.

Despite silently mocking this in her heart, Alice kept her head down and quietly found an inconspicuous spot in the corner to sit.

The man walked over to an elderly gentleman sitting on a single sofa and whispered something in his ear. The old gentleman glanced at Alice, nodded, and the man left.

Alice understood that her presence was temporarily permitted.

In the silent and vigilant atmosphere, a few more people arrived, gradually filling the sparse room.

"Looks like this is everyone for today," the old gentleman finally spoke after an indeterminate amount of time. "Let's begin."

He didn't specifically mention me... As the old gentleman finished speaking, Alice's eyes flickered under her lowered lashes.

"I want to buy a marrow crystal from the 'Elven Spring.' Who has one?" A man sitting not far from Alice suddenly spoke loudly, startling her.

Alice turned to look at the man beside her. His hood was down, revealing a masked face. The fat on the lower half of his face, not covered by the mask, jiggled as he spoke.

Alice squinted slightly. Certain features on the man's lower face seemed familiar, making her suspect she knew him.

Before the man noticed Alice's gaze and turned his head, Alice looked away and lowered her head again, waiting for others to speak.

The room fell silent, and the man didn't get the answer he wanted. He smacked his lips and muttered, "Damn, every time I ask, no one has it... I brought four bottles of potions this time. They effectively stop bleeding and promote wound healing, much better than going to a clinic, and they last for six months."

Huh? He's a pharmacist?

Alice suddenly found the source of the familiar feeling. She realized this pharmacist was the one she had met in Tingen City, the one who had escaped. Damn...

The sudden surge of murderous intent startled Alice. She quickly suppressed it, but deeper confusion filled her heart: How could I want to kill someone? How could I want to kill someone over this?

A wave of fear spread from her heart. The best explanation was that her personality had drastically changed due to recent events—but if that were the case, Alice wouldn't be so afraid.

The budding murderous intent disappeared quickly after Alice noticed it, leaving her unable to explore its source. It only made her realize that this thought was not her own.

No, it wasn't useless... At least it made me vigilant. Otherwise, I might have unknowingly been influenced and turned into someone else...

Under the cover of her hood, Alice calmed her emotions. The task that had been temporarily postponed after her promotion was now moved back up, on par with her promotion—she needed to find her past.

Meanwhile, the fat pharmacist's potions had already been bought by someone else at the gathering. A woman spoke up, "I want to sell a weapon."

Alice, who hadn't brought any money, perked up her ears—she didn't plan to buy or sell anything at this gathering initially. Besides trading, these gatherings were most useful for helping her grow into a qualified extraordinary being.

"It's a runic steel sword made by the Church of the Eternal Sun, with purification and exorcism effects. It's the bane of undead creatures like water ghosts, wraiths, and zombies. It can still be used for three years, and of course, it's sharp enough to kill. 500 pounds, or the formula for Sequence 8 'Barbarian,' and it's yours." The woman's voice fluctuated, clearly trying to disguise her features.

Barbarian? I wonder which pathway's Sequence 8 that is...

No one responded, and the woman fell silent in disappointment.

"I want to sell a special extraordinary item," another person spoke up. "This extraordinary item is called 'Fortune Accessory.' It can bring good fortune for three months. Just 2000 pounds, and it's yours. Believe me, you'll earn more than that in three months."

Alice, who had recently mocked her own sequence for being suitable for gambling, remained silent. But she quickly sensed something was off and asked, "What's the side effect?"

"...If you don't transfer it to someone else within three months, you'll become penniless in the following half month, even if you do transfer it." The other person reluctantly answered.

As a lucky person and soon-to-be Disaster Priest, Alice felt her understanding of the balance between luck and misfortune deepen.
