Chapter 35: Fear
Klein nodded and continued to ask, "Are you still making 'sacrifices' to that omniscient and omnipotent god?"
"Yes, we still are, but since the day we were abandoned, we haven't received any response," Derrick replied, his tone betraying an unhidden sorrow.
Klein remained unmoved, casually saying, "Describe in detail the process of your sacrifices."
Alger was extremely excited about this, feeling that he had found the true meaning of life, completely oblivious to the pitying looks from Audrey and Alice.
Derrick, unaware of all this, followed Klein's instructions and began to recount the entire sacrificial ritual. As Alice listened, she suddenly understood what Klein intended to do—he wanted to see if he could use it himself.
When Klein announced the end of the session, Alice and the others stood up to pay their respects. Afterward, she found herself still standing in place, confused.
Alice looked at Klein with a puzzled expression, "Do you have something to say to me?"
"Why didn't you tell 'Justice' about the alternative materials?" Klein asked curiously.
"..." Alice stared at Klein without speaking.
"Do you need me to pay you?" Klein hesitated under Alice's gaze and made a guess.
"No," Alice shook her head, "Your security clearance isn't high enough."
"?" Klein was utterly shocked by this response, staring at Alice in disbelief.
"If 'Justice' continues to ask, you might hear it, but if you ask, your security clearance isn't high enough," Alice replied firmly.
Klein was at a loss for words. He opened his mouth several times but couldn't say anything. In the end, Alice only saw Mr. Fool angrily end the summoning.
Back in reality, the uneasy agitation quickly invaded Alice's good mood once again.
This time, the signal that things were getting worse seemed to have finally arrived—Megose had disappeared!
While the members of the Aurora Order and the officials of Tingen City were mutually restraining each other, both sides exhausted by the conflict, Megose vanished without a trace.
Mr. A vented his hatred on the official Beyonders, and the missing Megose became a hidden time bomb.
Alice finally realized what the agitation buried deep in her heart had been trying to warn her about, but it was too late.
She tried to divine Megose's location, but the person who had taken her wasn't foolish and had certainly thought of anti-divination measures. Without interference, Alice might have been able to see something with her high spirituality and the favor of fate, like the witch Triss, but with anti-divination in place, she was powerless.
As the fear gradually spread from the depths of her heart, Alice finally faced the end.
A blonde, blue-eyed woman in her early twenties, wearing a loose dress and a ruffled hat, with a melancholic and serene demeanor, walked in.
She seemed dazed, her belly swollen, as if she were in a trance. She walked in and smiled at Alice, "I don't know why, but I suddenly wanted to come here."
The moment Alice saw her, she knew who she was—Megose! The one carrying the offspring of the True Creator!
Alice felt her hair stand on end. She instinctively wanted to jump up and run, but her muscles wouldn't respond. At that moment, a hand pressed on her shoulder, and she heard Dunn's voice, "Do you need something?"
Alice instantly felt much calmer, her muscles seemingly back under her control. She forced a standard but stiff smile and asked in a calm, emotionless voice, "Do you need anything? Coffee or tea?"
"Just warm water," Alice heard Megose reply, "I want to talk to you aboutLanevus. I heard you know a lot about him."
So Alice stood up with a smile, left without hesitation, and quickly but calmly went to the basement to inform the Night Watchers, "Megose is upstairs."
The Night Watchers' faces changed instantly. They put away their usual demeanor and became serious, methodically arranging tasks—some went to notify non-combat personnel to leave, some urgently contacted Sesima, and some went to calm Megose.
As for how Megose appeared at the Night Watchers' headquarters under city-wide lockdown, it no longer mattered—or rather, it was useless to care.
When Alice returned with warm water, she realized the source of her recent agitation and fear—it was the same as the death shadow that once loomed over Dunn, the same as the coincidences Klein felt. The target wasn't Dunn or Klein, but the Night Watchers' headquarters in Tingen City! Today, they were unlikely to receive any support.
...But what was here?
Alice had no time to think further. As she put down the warm water and looked up, Megose was pulling out a handful of hair from her head.
Alice froze, but Megose seemed unaware of anything wrong. She irritably picked up the water cup, took a sip, then slammed it on the table, and clawed five bloody marks on her cheek.
Alice stiffly watched Megose's red and white face. She heard Megose ask, "What's wrong with you? You don't look well."
"No, I'm fine," Alice forced a smile, trying to make a joke as usual, but it was a huge challenge for her stiff smile, "I just suddenly remembered I have something to do."
"I see," Megose scratched her cheek again, adding five more bloody marks to the other side of her face, "Sorry, my face is a bit itchy."
Alice forced a smile. She wasn't sure if Megose could see the abnormality in her expression, but she felt it didn't matter even if Megose didn't notice.
Alice retreated behind the partition, where Klein hid behind Leonard to avoid being seen by Alice—ha, he still remembered that.
Leonard looked at Alice seriously and said in a deep voice, "We don't have time. In three minutes at most, the child in Megose's belly will be born."
As everyone knows, agitation turns into fear, and then into despair that devours thoughts... Well, I'm just playing with cults.
