Capítulo 84: Chapter 84: Shoddy Workmanship

As the night deepened, there was no decrease in the number of people on the streets. North America is the world's largest film market, with many enthusiastic movie fans whose tastes vary widely. Watching interesting indie films at the film festival is also a source of enjoyment for many.

Moreover, apart from during the film festival, most of the films shown on the streets cannot be seen again later. Even the chance of them being released on video tapes or DVDs is very slim.

Then there are the film buyers from the movie companies. Every year at the Saint Dennis Film Festival, there are always a few small productions that turn out to be quite profitable.

"It seems like someone from that Atison company," Tony said, pointing to one of the few spectators among the screening audience. "The one we met in the hotel lobby earlier, called Billy."

Ronan also noticed and said to Tony, "Let's go take a look."

The two of them walked over to where the screening was taking place. Billy saw Ronan and smiled, to which Ronan responded with a smile.

The two sides were not particularly familiar with each other and did not exchange words.

"What a lousy film," a viewer complained to Ronan on his left. "The shaking is making me dizzy."

He beckoned to his companion, "Let's go, let's go."

His companion shook her head, "The picture quality is terrible."

The two of them turned and left without any nostalgia.

Ronan didn't pay attention to them. He crossed his arms, pinched his chin, and watched the screen with interest despite its poor quality.

Indeed, the picture quality was very poor, and the shaking was quite severe. With his discerning eye, Ronan could tell that a cheap DV camera had been used, likely handheld, and not professional equipment like a Sony or Canon camera.

After watching for a while, Ronan glanced at the people screening the movie. There were only two people at this screening spot, both in their thirties, one was a Caucasian man wearing glasses, and the other was of Latin descent.

"This is too terrible..." Many people complained about the film, and soon only Ronan, Tony, and Billy from Atison Entertainment were left.

Tony whispered, "Let's go, this isn't a movie, it's just a low-quality self-shot DV."

But Ronan shook his head. "No hurry, let's wait a bit."

He continued to watch the screen, seeming to notice some differences from what he remembered. Many scenes had different sequences, and there were too many flaws. Something didn't seem quite right?

Then Ronan figured it out—editing! It was the editing! He suspected that after this film fell into the hands of the film company in his previous life, it underwent re-editing.

"You guys here?" Someone walked up to where Ronan and Billy from Atison Entertainment were standing, looked around, and said, "Found any interesting films?"

The newcomer was Gray Enric. Passing by, he saw Ronan and Billy watching the same film and, as a professional buyer, he immediately came over to see what caught their interest.

Billy looked at Gray and shrugged. "There's no interesting film here. We're just surprised that the film festival is getting worse, even allowing this kind of amateur self-shot DV to be screened."

As he spoke, he shook his head.

Ronan agreed, "The details reflect the whole, and all the films I've seen have been disappointing. The film festival is not what it used to be."

Of course, Gray Enric didn't believe the words of the two colleagues. After smiling, he stared at the small screen for a while. The violent shaking of the camera coupled with the rough and poor-quality picture made him feel dizzy.

After looking around at the two colleagues, it turned out that these two were not lying. This couldn't be considered a film at all. His home videos were better than this.

Indeed, the Saint Dennis Film Festival was getting worse and worse. It seemed that anything could be brought here for screening.

Billy Holford hesitated for a moment, then left. He felt that there might be some hidden value in the film, but his rationality told him that this kind of junk couldn't be sold even if it were released on videotapes.

Maybe he would consider it again when the director screened his next film.

Ninety-nine percent of films like this ended up in the hands of the producers. After all, with such poor picture quality, shaky shots, and no storyline, what would they do with it? Release it directly on videotape?

Moreover, even though he wasn't a professional in the film industry like Ronan, he had seen many films, and even the worst quality films produced in Germany by grandpas and grandmas were better than this DV recording.

Ronan ignored Tony's incredulous gaze and dialed the number on the business card.

Tony couldn't believe it. "Are you serious, Ronan? Are you actually interested in that junk film? Can that thing even be considered a movie?"

Ronan raised a finger to his lips, gesturing for silence, then made the call.

"Hello, this is Daniel Mayleck. How can I help you?" came the voice from the other end.

Upon hearing the voice, Ronan dropped the disdainful act he had put on earlier and calmly said, "Hello, Director Daniel Mayleck. I'm Ronan Anderson, a film buyer from Relative Entertainment Group. I watched your film tonight and would like to arrange a meeting with you."

The voice on the other end was full of excitement. "Oh... oh! Sure! When? Now?"

Ronan couldn't appear too eager, as that would be disadvantageous for the subsequent negotiations. He calmly replied, "Tomorrow morning at 9:00 a.m., I'll be waiting for you at the coffee shop of the Parker City Hotel."

"Great! Great! I'll definitely be there on time!" came the enthusiastic response from the other end.
