Capítulo 43: The Fire That Consumes

Empress Lamaine's eyes bore into Heather, her voice sharp with impatience. "Why did you tell Lila that Axel is the father?" she demanded. "What were you thinking, Heather?"

Heather met Lamaine's gaze with a calm, almost dismissive air. "It doesn't matter, Your Highness," she replied coolly. "The child has the blood of Ezra—that's all that counts. Telling Lila Axel is the father serves our purpose. It's like killing two birds with one stone."

For a moment, Lamaine's eyes narrowed, scrutinizing Heather's expression for any sign of deceit. Then, slowly, a twisted smile spread across her lips. "Good," she said, her voice laced with satisfaction. "Because this child is our revenge for Mateo. He took something precious from me, my dead child, Bianca, and now, we'll take something precious from him. This is justice."

Heather nodded, her smile mirroring the Empress's. The two women shared a moment of silent understanding, their dark intentions perfectly aligned. The game they were playing was dangerous, but both knew the stakes—and they were willing to risk everything to win.

Lila returned to the banquet, her mind still spinning from the unsettling events in Heather's chamber. The grand hall was filled with the usual chatter and laughter, but an undercurrent of tension seemed to simmer beneath the surface. She tried to focus on the festivities, but her thoughts kept drifting back to the cryptic conversation she had overheard, and the unsettling revelation about Heather's child.

As she moved through the crowd, a sudden commotion erupted near the far end of the hall. The air filled with the acrid scent of smoke, and before Lila could fully grasp what was happening, flames began to lick at the draperies and decorations. Panic spread quickly among the guests, and screams echoed as people scrambled to escape the growing inferno.

Amid the chaos, Lila felt a rough hand seize her arm. She whirled around to see Mateo, his face twisted with fury. Without a word, he dragged her away from the banquet hall, pulling her through the panicked crowd. The heat from the flames was intense, and Lila struggled to keep up with Mateo's pace as they navigated through the smoke-filled corridors.

"Mateo, what are you doing?" Lila gasped, trying to wrench her arm free from his iron grip.

Mateo didn't respond. His eyes were wild, his expression set in a grim mask of determination. The fire roared behind them, but he didn't seem to care. All that mattered to him now was getting Lila away from the scene, away from whatever he had planned.

Finally, he stopped in a secluded alcove, far from the chaos of the banquet. The flames were still visible in the distance, casting a flickering orange glow on his face. Lila could see the madness in his eyes, the fury that had driven him to start the fire in the first place.

"You're coming with me," Mateo hissed, his voice low and dangerous. "I won't let them take you away."

Lila's heart raced as she stared at him in shock. "Mateo, this is madness! Let me go!"

But Mateo only tightened his grip, pulling her closer. "No, Lila," he said, his voice trembling with a mix of anger and desperation. "You're mine. And I'll burn this entire empire to the ground before I let anyone take you from me."

As the flames continued to spread, casting ominous shadows across the walls, Mateo's expression twisted into something dark and unsettling. His grip on Lila's arm was unyielding, his knuckles white with the force of it. The smoke swirled around them, but Mateo seemed oblivious to the danger, his focus solely on Lila and his own twisted agenda.

"This is good," Mateo muttered, more to himself than to her, his voice carrying an eerie satisfaction. "Heather... she was becoming a problem anyway. I wanted to get rid of her, and now the fire will do it for me."

Lila's eyes narrowed with fury as she listened to him. The cold calculation in his words made her skin crawl, but she refused to show any fear. Fearless and resolute, she met his gaze head-on, her anger flaring as brightly as the fire that raged behind them.

"You're insane," Lila spat, her voice steady despite the turmoil within her. "You think this will solve anything? You think you can just get rid of people when they're inconvenient to you?"

Mateo's eyes flashed with a dangerous glint, but Lila didn't waver. She twisted her arm, trying to break free from his grasp, but Mateo's hold was like iron. He pulled her closer, his breath hot against her face as he leaned in, his expression a mixture of anger and twisted affection.

"You don't understand, Lila," Mateo growled. "I'll do whatever it takes to keep control. To keep you by my side. Heather was just an obstacle, and now she's out of the way. We can be together, and no one will stop us."

Lila's stomach churned at his words, but she refused to back down. Her anger gave her strength, and she fought against his grip with renewed vigor, her heart pounding with determination.

"You're a fool, Mateo," Lila hissed, her voice cutting through the crackling of the fire. "You can't control me. I'll never be yours."

But Mateo only smirked, his eyes alight with madness. "We'll see about that."

Lila struggled harder, her mind racing as she searched for a way out. She knew she couldn't overpower him by force, but she refused to give up. The flames crept closer, the heat intensifying, and still, Mateo held her fast, his grip tightening as if he feared she might slip away.

Lila's anger blazed within her, matching the fire that threatened to consume them both. She refused to be a pawn in Mateo's twisted game, and she would fight with everything she had to escape his clutches. Her breath came in short, determined bursts as she twisted and pulled, her muscles straining against his hold.

But Mateo was relentless, his eyes gleaming with a crazed determination that sent a shiver down Lila's spine. He seemed oblivious to the danger, consumed by his own obsession, and Lila knew she had to find a way to escape before it was too late.

With one final, desperate effort, Lila wrenched her arm free, stumbling back a few steps as she glared at Mateo with fierce resolve. "This ends here," she said, her voice steady and defiant.

Mateo's expression darkened, and for a moment, it seemed as though he might lash out, but then the reality of the situation began to dawn on him. The fire was spreading faster now, and the walls around them creaked ominously as the flames devoured the structure.

But then, the banquet hall was filled with the muffled sound of rain pounding against the windows, the steady rhythm a stark contrast to the chaos that had just unfolded. The air was thick with tension, the smell of smoke still lingering despite the heavy downpour outside. Lila, drenched and breathing heavily, found herself once again in the iron grip of Mateo.

He had captured her again, his hand clamped tightly around her wrist as if she might vanish at any moment. The rain-soaked fabric of her dress clung to her skin, her hair plastered against her face, but her spirit remained unbroken. Lila glared at Mateo, her eyes blazing with a mixture of defiance and fury.

"Let me go, Mateo," Lila demanded, her voice steady despite the fear gnawing at the edges of her resolve. The rain continued to hammer against the windows, each drop like a ticking clock counting down the moments she had to free herself from his grasp.
