Capítulo 45: Just one more month
Several more days had passed since the incident. Ryo was now in a surgery room, assisting the group of doctors with a procedure on a civilian. This was the surgery he had truly prepared himself for, and for Ryo, the whole process felt easy.
Of course, it was complicated, but he wasn't in the middle of a forest with someone critically injured in front of him. The environment here was controlled; everything they did had a doctor assisting or being assisted. Ryo felt calm, and after a few more minutes, the procedure was completed.
All the doctors cleaned up the area, leaving the patient in the room to rest. Ryo walked out of the room and sat on one of the benches in the hospital corridor. He slowly removed his mask and white cap, letting out a sigh. Looking down the corridor, he muttered to himself, "Kentou still hasn't woken up. It's been two weeks. The doctors don't have much else to do. But maybe Tsunade can help."
He spoke softly, turning his face back to the ground. He had thought and studied many things to see if he could help Kentou, but none of them seemed truly effective. However, he knew that Kentou would either wake up on his own or Ryo would have to bring the compulsive gambler to see him and find a way to cure him. He let out another sigh, noticing a shadow over him.
Looking up, Ryo saw a young woman around twenty years old. "Ryo-kun, is everything okay? The surgery today was a success! Cheer up!" The woman speaking to him was Inuzuka Miko, a veterinary doctor who had been working at the hospital for a few months to learn better how to help humans as well. Although she mostly provided assistance and observed procedures, she was enthusiastic.
"Miko-san. Yes, I'm glad everything went well too. It was a planned surgery, so it was unlikely to go wrong." She looked at his response, and Ryo then felt a tap on his head, followed by a "humpf" from the young woman. He looked at her, surprised, then felt another tap.
"You're still too young to be so serious, Ryo-kun! I know you're already an excellent ninja medic, but you're still young. Try to act more like one! If you stay serious all the time, you'll get wrinkles!" Ryo placed his hands on his head after the light tap. He hadn't expected this; it had been a long time since anyone treated him like a child, so much so that he had almost forgotten he was one.
Ryo nodded. "I'll try, Miko-san." After she bid farewell and went to the other side of the hospital, Ryo also stood up. His tasks at the hospital for the day were done, at least those scheduled in his agenda. Now he walked towards a specific room.
Opening the door, he entered and saw the old Kentou lying with his eyes closed, breathing with the help of some devices and numerous cables monitoring his vital signs. It wasn't extremely modern equipment, more like a mixture of ninja times with the ancient society of Ryo's world.
He sat on the only chair near the bed, looking at Kentou. "Today, I managed to perform my first official surgery, Kentou-sensei. When you wake up, you'll be able to see the report and see that I did very well. It wasn't complicated, especially after what I did to save you. It'll be difficult to encounter something like that at the hospital, at least."
Ryo clenched his fists as he continued speaking. "Just one more month. And I'll graduate from the academy and become a real ninja. I asked the Hokage to try to get Tsunade to train me. If I succeed, I'll be able to ask her to come see you. But keep fighting. It would be better if you woke up before then!"
Ryo had visited Kentou's room almost every day to check on his sensei's condition, especially since he had to come to the hospital to study. So it wasn't much trouble for him. Standing up, he left the hospital and headed to the academy.
Today was a day off for his class since the final exams were coming soon. Most of the students were training with their clans for the final exam. But, of course, Ryo didn't need to do anything like that, and he had gone to the academy at Asuma's request.
Ryo wasn't sure what Asuma wanted with him, but he would find out soon enough. Opening the door to the classroom, he saw Asuma in his usual spot, as if he were about to give a lesson. In front of him was a not very long wooden box. "Ryo-kun, come here."
Ryo walked towards him calmly. "I have something to give you." Asuma said as he tapped the box in front of him. As Ryo approached, Asuma removed the lid, revealing a katana. It was the same size as the training katana Ryo used against Kentou. "This...?" Asuma gave a slight smile.
"It's yours. Kentou asked to have it made before leaving on a mission, intending to give it to you after you completed your training with him, which was supposed to end today when you completed your true surgery. Of course, you saved his life, so he wanted to give it to you earlier. But the weapon only arrived a few days ago."
Hearing this, Ryo looked at the details of the katana. It had a dark blade with golden details embedded in it. At the base of the katana, there was a golden dragon drawn in gold, making Ryo realize that Kentou had seen him training alone a few times. "So he knew." Giving a slight smile, Asuma stepped aside as Ryo walked towards the table to pick up the sword.
The katana had the ideal weight for him to handle. "Thank you, Kentou-sensei, and thank you, Asuma-sensei, for giving it to me." Ryo said in a calm tone before taking a deep breath. In the box, there was also a kit of ropes to pass through his body and attach the katana to his back. Ryo put it on and placed the katana on his back.
"I'll become a ninja in a few weeks, Asuma-sensei, and then I'll find a way to wake up Kentou-sensei." He spoke with determination and then began to walk out of the room. He had a few days to prepare for the tests, but nothing his classmates did could put Ryo in danger of failing.
