The bar counter on the second floor looked exactly the same as the one on the first floor, except that it was manned by three seventeen- or eighteen-year-old lads, whose young faces were filled with sly grins directed at Musheng.
"Hit on your sister-in-law! She's here to apply for a net manager position!" Zhao Junjie cursed at them, then walked over and motioned for Musheng to come with a crook of his finger.
Musheng followed him over, and the guys behind the counter seemed to get more excited. One of them, with bright eyes and an energetic leap, sprawled onto the bar counter, as if about to vault right over it.
"The heavens have eyes, we actually have a girl willing to jump into the fire... Uh, spit! I mean to apply at our internet cafe!"
No sooner had the boy on the counter finished than Zhao Junjie stepped over in two strides and swatted him down: "Shut up!"
It wasn't easy to get a girl; they didn't want to scare her off with this bunch of beasts!
Musheng just hooked the corner of her mouth and said nothing. Zhao Junjie went to the computer at the bar, fiddled with it for a bit, and then waved Musheng over: "You play on the computer, right? Do you know the basics?"
"I do."
Musheng replied succinctly. Naturally, with her former identity, she hadn't had much experience with computers, but in her previous life she had spent every day with that person, and though she had no interest in computers, she had gotten a thorough grasp of their basic use. An internet cafe's operating system was hardly a challenge for her.
The three young men at the bar all watched Musheng with shining eyes, but Musheng remained unfazed.
"Hmm, okay, that'll do."
Zhao Junjie didn't seem interested in testing her skills; instead, he repeated the job requirements already posted outside: "The pay is 3500 a month, with no days off. The boss might give holidays for special occasions. Food and accommodation are included. You don't have any issues with these, do you?"
"I have no issues, and I don't need board and lodging—I'll go home for that."
Zhao Junjie looked up at her in surprise. Not taking the lodging made sense, but not even the meals? Maybe she just didn't like the food. Even though their meals were provided by the restaurant across the street and its reputation was consistently good, Zhao Junjie was too lazy to mention it and simply reiterated Musheng's duties.
"Your job is simple. Since you're new here, you'll start with the day shift, from eight in the morning until eleven-thirty, and then from one in the afternoon until seven at night. Besides booting up machines for customers, you'll need to help them with whatever they need, such as preparing their instant noodles, or delivering cigarettes and food if they don't collect it themselves. Don't worry about cleaning; we have someone for that..."
Zhao Junjie seemed to have a lot of authority; he decided on Musheng's employment all by himself without consulting anyone. To add a sense of formality, he even drafted a contract, stating a one-month probation period. If Musheng didn't meet their standards during that time, they could ask her to leave; conversely, if Musheng wanted to leave, she would have to wait until the end of the month to do so.
The rules were a bit odd, but there were no problems with the contract. Musheng had no objections, so she signed. Seeing her sign, the other three lads jumped up cheering "Long live!!"
Their loud cheers startled the other gamers, but since Musheng was starting work the next day, after signing she went straight home. Some people from the second floor heard there was a new female net manager and were quite intrigued, but the happiest of all were the three net managers. They were delighted to finally have an eye-catching girl around, little knowing this was the beginning of their future woes.
...
Musheng stepped out of the internet cafe, feeling an unusual sense of elation—probably because he thought he'd found a job that could support himself. The corners of his mouth were turned up slightly, and even the oppressive heat seemed to annoy him less.
This was the center of Huayang District, a classic prime location. It must have taken deep pockets to open an internet cafe here.
To be safe, he still had his card in his pocket after coming such a distance, ready to buy something pleasing to take back with him.
Ahead, countless sedans drove on the wide stretch of road. Musheng, blending in with the crowd, waited to cross the crosswalk, intending to head to the massive 'International Mall' diagonally opposite.
When the red light came on, the sedans slowed to a stop, and the crowd began to surge across. As Musheng moved with the flow, he suddenly felt an inexplicable jump in his heart and glanced to the left.
That one look caused Musheng to stiffen up suddenly.
Amidst the many familiar brand sedans, there sat a seemingly understated black car. But that conspicuous noble logo still betrayed its identity — the body made of special material reflected a cold, chilling hardness under the sunlight, giving off an immense shock and a sense of pressure with just a single car, indicating that the person inside was extraordinary.
And indeed, it was extraordinary!
Musheng knew the car all too well; there were only three of its kind in the world—one was bought by a diamond tycoon in South America, one by the Royal Family of Penalan, and the other was the one right before his eyes.
The other two were, of course, not likely to appear in China. Those that could appear in China made it obvious who the person in the car was, without saying a word.
Because the car was so understated, even though it was openly present here, no one could identify the astonishing price tag behind it.
Musheng pursed his lips, unable to imagine that the person he had gone over in his heads many times—correctly speaking, the person he hadn't stopped missing since his rebirth—would appear here. Caught off guard, he stopped in place for a moment. Many people passed by, giving him strange looks.
Musheng quickly came back to his senses. He gazed deeply at the car and, through the completely opaque tinted glass that allowed only visibility from inside out, he couldn't see anything of the car's interior. He gave a sign, then let out a wry smile. It wasn't necessary anymore—last life, he had dragged it out without giving that person a clear response. Even if he felt a slight regret after being reborn, the truth proved that no one would believe him.
Who would believe such an unbelievable story?
Thinking of this, Musheng soon walked on with a sense of relief. Whether it was an illusion or not, after he moved forward, it seemed a burning, intense gaze landed on him. As he crossed the zebra crossing and waited in the middle of the road, separating the two streams of vehicles for the next red light, the sound of a car suddenly became piercingly shrill.
Accompanied by a sudden wave of ear-splitting screams around him, Musheng's eyelid twitched. Turning around, he saw the car he had been watching charging straight towards him at a shockingly fast speed.
At that speed and target, hitting Musheng would only take a matter of seconds, but a car worth hundreds of millions was different. It came to a screeching halt just mere centimeters from Musheng, the car body merely swaying slightly.
This horrifying scene lasted only a few seconds. As the rear passenger door 'clicked' about to open, Musheng reminded emotionlessly,
"You've run a red light."
