Lin Wei withdrew her gaze, and amidst the frequent looks Bai Jian sent her way, she picked up the note from Jiang Su and opened it: "Leave a phone number and consider us acquainted."
Lin Wei opened her mouth slightly and then twisted around to look back again.
The boy had droopy eyelids and was leaning against the chair back emotionless, absent-mindedly twirling a pen.
He appeared very silent, as if the one who had just passed her the note wasn't him.
Seemingly aware of her gaze, he slightly lifted his eyelids.
At the moment when their gazes clashed, Lin Wei was inadvertently shocked and quickly turned her head back the next moment.
Lin Wei stared at the words on the note for a while, rolled it up, and stuffed it into the drawer of her desk, then picked up her pen and continued studying.
At eight thirty, the bell for the end of evening self-study rang and the classroom instantly burst into a clamor. The day students shouted "going home," and one after another, left the classrooms with their school bags.
As Lin Wei was unlocking her bag and was about to stuff things in it, someone called out to her: "Lin Wei."
Lin Wei lifted her head, it was Liang Sichen.
Liang Sichen was a boarding student, looked scholarly and always wore thick glasses, giving off an intellectual aura. He was also the class president but doesn't particularly meddle with matters most of the time. He was perpetually immersed in a sea of questions wherever he went, he always seemed to have fluent words at his disposal either reciting English words or ancient poems.
Liang Sichen came over with his Math Olympiad book, walked up to Lin Wei, and asked: "Have you solved this problem before?"
Lin Wei put her bag behind her and looked at the book in Liang Sichen's hands.
She had indeed solved the problem before and explained her solution very quietly to Liang Sichen.
Liang Sichen's grades were always among the highest in the class. Lin Wei's explanation didn't have to be too detailed, just highlighting the key points was enough for him to understand instantly.
"Thank you, thank you." Liang Sichen thanked her multiple times, adjusting his glasses and sharing his own thoughts. After making sure there were no issues, he looked at the space beyond Lin Wei's shoulder.
Jiang Su, who was sitting there just now, had already left. Liang Sichen thought for a while, then started again: "Lin Wei."
Lin Wei lifted her head, "Hmm?"
Liang Sichen hesitated to speak.
Lin Wei was in a hurry to pack up and head home: "What's the matter?"
Liang Sichen clipped his pen in the Olympiad math book: "You know that repeat student well?"
"Huh?" Lin Wei paused, then realized that Liang Sichen was referring to Jiang Su. She blinked, not answering Liang Sichen's question directly: "Why do you ask?"
"During class, I saw him passing notes with you and you turned back to speak with him too. It seems like you two are well acquainted." Liang Sichen frowned, hesitated for a while, then said, "Lin Wei, you better stay away from him. He had a classmate in my neighborhood. I've heard about him from that classmate - he seemingly dropped a stone on his best friend when he was down."
"I'm not exactly sure what the situation entailed, but it had to do with the fight he got into a year ago. His best friend... he caused..." Liang Sichen lowered his voice, "he went in."
It took Lin Wei a while to respond to what Liang Sichen had said, 'he went in' meant... imprisonment.
In these few days, Lin Wei had heard too many rumors about Jiang Su. Even though it was impossible to ascertain the truth, the rumor that Liang Sichen brought up surprised her.
It always felt like a made-up story when terms like 'high school students' and 'imprisonment' were brought up together.
Liang Sichen glanced at the time; seeing that there were less than two minutes before the beginning of the third self-study session for boarding students, he said, "Class is about to start, I'll leave it at that. Anyway, it's better for you to stay away from him. Look at him, fooling around all the time and not taking classes seriously. Whether he shows up or not, he's always either asleep or playing on his phone. Hanging out with that kind of person will get you nowhere."
Lin Wei said nothing.
Liang Sichen returned to his seat at the front of the class, with his books in his arms.
Both Bai Jian and Lin Wei were day students. Bai Jian had heard the conversation between Lin Wei and Liang Sichen.
After the two of them had finished packing up, they walked out of the classroom together carrying school bags. Bai Jian asked, "Is the thing Liang Sichen mentioned true? If Jiang Su really gave his best friend another blow when he was already down, he's really not human."
Upon leaving the school building, Bai Jian suddenly said: "Weiwei, I really admire you!"
"Huh?"
"You're actually not scared of Jiang Su at all and dare to exchange notes with him. I'm terrified of him; I don't even dare to look at him." After a pause, Bai Jian continued: "But Jiang Su is indeed handsome and attracts loads of girls. It's such a shame."
Lin Wei laughed at Bai Jian's words: "You don't dare to even look at him and yet you know he's handsome."
"..." Bai Jian choked: "Lin Wei, you're annoying."
After a while, Bai Jian curiously asked: "Weiwei, what were you talking about in class with Jiang Su in the note?"
"Nothing much."
Just as Bai Jian was about to pester Lin Wei with teasing questions, she saw her mother waiting to pick her up at the school gate. She swallowed her words, said goodbye to Lin Wei, and ran out of the school gate.
As Lin Wei walked out of the school, she thought for a while and decided not to go directly to the nearby bus stop; instead, she turned onto the opposite street. After walking about a hundred meters, she saw the lit-up Public Bookstore.
As she pushed the door open, she immediately saw Chen Si, the owner of "Public Bookstore" sitting at the till.
Chen Si also saw her and pointed at a bag on the table without even bothering to greet her. "It's yours."
Lin Wei walked over and looked at the various papers in the bag. She reached inside and casually flipped through it. In one of the language papers, she saw two red one hundred yuan bills.
Chen Si glanced at Lin Wei and saw that, unlike before, she didn't take the papers and leave immediately. He found it odd: "What's up?"
"Nothing." Lin Wei acted as if nothing was amiss, removed her hand and then glanced at the ashtray next to Chen Si, which was filled with cigarette butts. "I just wanted to remind you to smoke less."
Chen Si chuckled: "Oh, the kid has grown up, starting to care about others now."
Chen Si was only five years older than her, but he spoke as if he was her elder...
Lin Wei rolled her eyes, picked up the heavy bag of papers: "Goodbye."
Chen Si reached out and patted Lin Wei's head: "You should leave or else you'll miss the bus."
Lin Wei changed her tone and said "Goodbye" again, then left the Public Bookstore.
When she got home, Lin Wei took a shower and then went straight into her room. She pulled out the two one hundred yuan bills that had been tucked in her papers and put them into her school bag. Then she turned over a notebook from her drawer and recorded this transaction.
Since her mother passed away, Chen Si had been giving her some allowance every month. She recorded all of it meticulously in the notebook.
Even if they say nothing now, it must be paid back in the future.
After closing the notebook and putting it back in the drawer, Lin Wei grabbed her bag and unzipped it. She poured out all the things inside.
Among the various textbooks, exercise books, and test papers, there was a rolled-up math paper.
