Natalie Green's voice became suddenly demure, her arms wrapped tightly around Ethan Montgomery's waist, clinging to him as if her life depended on it. 

Avery Miller stood just aside, her hand swollen and reddened from being slapped, not moving forward nor making a sound. 

She was, in fact, dying to understand the nature of the relationship between the woman clinging to him and Ethan himself.

Now, it seemed she had her answer: the woman before her was his fiancée! 

What did that make her, then? 

A contractual wife? A lover bound by agreement? 

It was as if their three-year relationship was a fleeting blossom, a dream within a transient life. 

Was the end date they agreed upon meant to facilitate his eventual departure to marry his intended?
