Lily curtsied with a low, respectful bow. "Your highness."
Gilbert stopped when he stood before here. "Lillian." He greeted and when Lily rose, he took her hand in his, placing a kiss on the back. "Welcome. It is nice to see that you made it."
Lily smiled at him, nodding. Then Gilbert turned to Ava, who silently stood beside her friend. When she saw that the prince's attention was now on her, she offered a respectful bow in greeting as well.
"Your highness," she greeted.
"Thank you for coming Ava," Gilbert replied. His voice was deep, refined and majestic. He seemed like someone who never made mistakes and even if he did, he made it look perfect. "I imagine you are excited to watch the dance?"
"That is true. That is the highlight of the ball, your highness," Ava replied. Her demeanour was relaxed and she spoke rather casually. Lily was not sure if Ava liked the prince, but then again, she was not certain if Ava liked anyone when she met them because her behaviour was always the same with every other person.
Genuinely, Lily would not have known that Ava considered her close as a friend if she herself hadn't told her. That was one of the things she liked about Ava.
One could not guess what she was thinking solely from what her expressions were. She was more complicated than that. And Lillian was somewhat proud that she knew Ava more than anyone else besides her parents.
"Then I must wish you a wonderful time," Gilbert replied.
"Thank you, your highness," Ava bowed again, understanding the prince was done speaking with her. "Hopefully, there will be no fatalities this time."
"Let us keep our fingers crossed," Gilbert said. He brought his arm up for Lily to look around and Lily glanced back at Ava.
"I will see you later, Ava," Lily smiled at her friend who returned her smile. She took Gilbert's awaiting arm and they began strutting up the steps together.
"You are getting better at walking in heels, Lily," Gilbert commented. "You didn't stumble once. Have you been practicing?"
Lily replied, "I didn't want you dying of embarrassment so I may have practiced for a few hours."
Her joke evoked a graceful, short laugh from the prince's lips. "You couldn't embarrass me if you tried, Lillian."
"Is that a challenge?," she asked, lifting her brows up in question.
"That is quite alright, Lillian," he replied. They fell into a comfortable silence and Lily silently wondered what had caused his good mood. Was he perhaps happy to see her?
She cringed at the thought. It was very unlikely.
Then why was he in a good mood? His mood usually was neutral. He was rarely ever angry but he wasn't particularly ever happy per se either.
"It is odd that you are quiet," his words brought her out of her thoughts. And she lightly glared at him.
"I am not a talkative," she replied.
"Those are your words, not mine, Lillian," he answered. "I merely asked why you were so quiet."
"I am usually quiet. It is not odd," Lily said.
"You should learn to listen more, Lillian," Gilbert laughed. "I did not say it was odd."
Lily looked at him as though he was saying rubbish and the expression caused him to laugh again. He paused in his steps.
"Perhaps I should ask my question in a simpler term?," he asked. "What are you thinking, Lillian?"
"Why do you care?," Lillian asked. "It is my thoughts."
"I am merely curious," he replied.
"If i recall correctly, your highness, when we were younger, you told me and I quote, "It is easy for me to read you." So why are my thought indecipherable now?," Lily asked and she had to consciously remind herself not to not smirk in victory.
Gilbert tilted his head, "Did I? I don't remember that."
"I do," Lillian retorted. She hadn't intended it, but her words had come out sharp, almost a snap. She cleared her throat, a red colour tainting her cheeks. "I do."
Gilbert tilted his head. "Are you perhaps annoyed with what I had said?"
She was annoyed with a lot of things he had to her. But Lillian simply shook her head.
"Annoyed? Me? You couldn't annoy me if you tried, your highness," she replied. Her reply had an amused smile creep up the prince's lips and he nodded.
"That is fair."
"Are you excited for the dance?,"
Lillian nodded. "Who isn't?"
Gilbert replied, "I have something to show you. Come with me."
