Capítulo 20: _ Bright Child

Isleen

~~

stood up from bed as the familiar vampire scent snaked through my senses. It sent a prickle of alertness down my spine. I mean, who wouldn't be alerted to smell a vampire in their surroundings at this hour of the night?

Had it been before, I would have doubted this scent as we had thought that there was no way vampires could scale through the veil but after the attack, everyone knew better.

I was a special wolf with a special ability. We wolves usually don't possess special abilities unless for the laid down ones that were attached to being a Wolf. However, in my case, such wasn't the case.

My type was a rare breed, found in one wolf in a million years. That much meant that I was probably the only special wolf around in a million years.

My ability was to sense other creatures that weren't my kind at a certain radius. Hence, I guess my reaction was justified for this smell that lingered around that night.

I crept to the window, eyes scanning the shadows below. Nothing. I found nothing unusual. Just a couple of wolves returning from their late-night jobs.

"Did I smell this wrong? Such has never happened before." I tilted my head, frustration chewing at me.

Was it mere paranoia, or were these premonitions intensifying?

However, just as I was about to turn away from the window, my wolf snarled. Another aroma drifted up – one that made my heart stuttered. It was one scent so delicious that I knew I could smell it forever without getting tired.

It was the unmistakable musk of Gamma Rhett. I had smelled it on him back at the headquarters. There was no way in hell that I'd ever be able to decipher that smell anywhere.

It was absurd to think that Gamma Rhett's scent was here. It was impossible, yet I found myself scrutinizing the darkness with even greater zeal.

Wait a sec…

Why would he be here? Confusion warred inside of me. It was impossible. Gamma Rhett was miles away, probably at the headquarters or at home with Kylo.

Yet, his scent played on my nose so strongly that I thought I might cry from how much I enjoyed it. I glanced down once more but no Gamma Rhett materialized under the moonlit sky.

Of course. What was I thinking?

Was my wolf messing with me? Probably whirling from yesterday's playful jeers with Cullen about mates?

With a sigh that tasted like defeat, I forced myself to relax. It was likely all in my head. It was definitely from the stress of wanting to adopt Liam so badly or the unnerving vampire presence I was sensing.

"Nah. I'm probably sensing a vampire because of this stress. There's no vampire here." I turned around, sniffing.

The scent didn't leave though. Owing to that, I decided that it was because of the ever-present ache of uncertainty regarding Kylo. I was too scared that I would break his heart. So much that I'm having conscious nightmares.

I pushed aside the unsettling thoughts and crawled back into bed. Liam shifted beside me and I traced my gaze to the lines of Liam's peaceful face.

He was merely a lost child, another casualty in this endless war. I would protect him, offer him a safe haven until this shit was over. It was the least I could do to serve the pack after my parents were traitors.

I guessed a part of me still wanted to prove to the pack that I could be different from my parents. I pulled the blankets closer. "Dffrebt?" I scoffed to myself. "What are you doing differently, Isleen?" I further asked myself. "You are breaking the pack's law and might break Kylo's heart."

I rustled my own hair, groaning in frustration. "Someone remind me what people who talk to themselves are called?"

I thought I heard a sound coming from Liam, so I turned to him but he was still very much deep in slumber. "Just a victim of circumstance." I sighed at him but later wondered if that mantra didn't apply to me.

If I wasn't a victim of circumstance too.

Sleep came finally and I drifted off to my very much needed sleep.

.

.

"Grrrrrr…" I groaned in sleep at the amount of sunlight scorching my face. "Did Cullen part the blinds?" I mumbled to myself and forced my lids to flutter open.

There, my heart jumped into an overdrive by what was in front of me. Liam, with eyes sparkling with a mischievous glee, hovered above me.

"Geez, Liam! What's up?!" I hollered, almost falling off of bed.

Liam began to laugh at my reaction. It was soothing seeing him laugh, revealing his missing dentition and I chose to continue to be dramatic just to keep him laughing.

However, a wave of relief still washed over me that it was just Liam and not some vampire from my nightmare. "Liam! You scared me half to death!" I exclaimed, disentangling myself from the sheets.

Liam erupted into an even louder laughter. As much as I wanted to hear him laugh, this new pitch sounded both innocent and oddly unsettling. "Sorry, Megami," he said, his voice carrying a hint of something older than his twelve years. "Cullen said to wake you up."

Cullen, that bastard! It's Sunday, gosh.

I didn't have to strain my ears to hear Cullen's booming voice and his off-key singing.

"Don't mind him," I muttered, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. "Has he had his breakfast?"

Liam shook his head, his smile turning into a hesitant frown. "No, Megami. But – I think he's cooking."

Why was Liam calling me Megami?

Only Kylo called me that. He must have picked it up from Kylo yesterday. I found it so amusing that I laughed out loud, leaving even Liam confused.

"Have you had your bath yet?"

"No, Megami."

"Okay, time to wash up!" I clapped, walking into the bathroom.

Liam followed.

Thoughts about all the strange sensations I sensed last night rushed to me in quick succession. I didn't realize I was lost in thoughts while I squeezed toothpaste into his brush until Liam spoke.

"Megami, what are you thinking about?"

His question caught me off guard. I studied his face, searching for any flicker of malignancy, but I saw only childlike curiosity mixed with a surprising spark of intelligence that I hadn't noticed before.

I had always thought Liam wasn't such a bright student, so I paid more attention to him at school, determined to help him up. But I guess you never truly know people until you get closer to them. Hence, I dismissed it whatever suspicions I might have, attributing it to my overactive imagination.

Liam was a mere bright child and there was no Gamma Rhett last night as there was no vampire.
