Capítulo 299: Fellow actor

The Bahamian sun beat down on the pristine beach, its warmth a stark contrast to the New York winter they'd left behind. As Lucas and Jennifer strolled hand in hand along the shoreline, a familiar figure caught Lucas's eye.

"Is that...?" Lucas squinted against the glare, then his face broke into a grin. "Leo!"

The man in question turned, pushing his sunglasses up. A flash of surprise crossed his face before it settled into a warm smile. "Lucas! Well, I'll be damned."

The two men embraced, clapping each other on the back.

"It's been what, two years?" Lucas said, still grinning.

Leonardo nodded. "Since the Inception promo tour. Time flies, huh?"

As they caught up, Lucas's eyes darted around, a mischievous glint in them. "So, where's your girlfriend? The news always has you surrounded by beautiful 'young' women."

Leonardo let out a wry chuckle. "Don't believe everything you read, man. I'm not the playboy they make me out to be." His smile faltered slightly. "Actually, Erin and I split up last month."

"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that," Lucas said, his tone softening.

Leonardo shrugged, then a smirk played on his lips. "Don't worry about it. Apparently, my breakup news was completely overshadowed by you two lovebirds." He gestured towards Jennifer, who'd been standing quietly nearby. "The 'Lucifer' couple, right? That's what they're calling you?"

Jennifer blushed slightly, but there was amusement in her eyes. "Guilty as charged," she said, stepping forward to greet Leonardo.

The sun-drenched beach echoed with laughter as Leonardo's eyes twinkled mischievously. He gave Lucas a playful nudge, his voice carrying a hint of admiration.

"Man, Lucas, you've really struck gold here," Leonardo said, gesturing towards Jennifer. His tone shifted to mock seriousness. "Don't go messing this up, alright? Or I might just have to swoop in."

Lucas chuckled, shaking his head. "No worries there, Leo. I'm not planning on following in your footsteps."

Leonardo clutched his chest in feigned offense. "Ouch, that's a low blow, buddy."

Guilt flashed across Lucas's face. "Hey, I didn't mean—"

Leonardo's serious facade cracked, and he burst into laughter. "Relax, I'm just messing with you. In fact, I was about to give you the same advice. Don't be like me, kid."

Jennifer joined in the laughter, her eyes sparkling with amusement. "Well, I certainly hope Lucas doesn't pick up your habits, Leo. I'm not keen on being traded in for a younger model every few years."

Leonardo raised his hands in surrender, his expression a mix of amusement and exasperation. "Come on, guys. I'm not that bad. Don't believe everything you read about me."

Lucas smirked, his tone dripping with sarcasm. "Right, because the paparazzi just photoshop all those yacht parties."

The banter continued, the three of them enjoying this moment of normalcy amidst their extraordinary lives.

As the three celebrities lounged on the beach, the gentle lapping of waves provided a soothing backdrop to their conversation. Suddenly, a melody drifted over from a nearby group of European tourists.

Leonardo's head snapped up, his eyes lighting up with recognition. "Oh man, do you guys hear that? That's 'Veridis Quo' by Daft Punk!"

Before Lucas or Jennifer could respond, Leonardo launched into an enthusiastic explanation. "It's from their 2001 album 'Discovery.' The title is actually a play on 'very disco.' The song's structure is fascinating, it uses..."

As Leonardo continued his impromptu music lecture, Lucas and Jennifer exchanged glances. Jennifer's eyebrows raised slightly in amusement, while Lucas bit back a grin.

After politely listening for a few minutes, Lucas made their excuses. As they walked away, Jennifer turned to Lucas, curiosity in her eyes. "Was he always like this on set?"

Lucas chuckled, nodding. "Oh yeah. I remember during Inception, we'd have these breaks between scenes. Leo would be in his trailer, and suddenly he'd burst out, all excited about some obscure song playing on the radio."

He mimicked Leonardo's enthusiastic tone, "'Hey, Lucas! Listen to this baseline. It's from a 1970s Bulgarian funk band!' He'd go on for ages about the most random music facts."

Jennifer laughed, shaking her head in amusement. "Who knew Leonardo DiCaprio was such a music geek?"

"Trust me," Lucas grinned, "That's just the tip of the iceberg. Wait till you get him started on environmental issues."

A few minutes later, Lucas and Jennifer strolled back to where they'd left Leonardo, their earlier amusement at his enthusiastic music lecture still lingering in their smiles.

They found him lounging on a beach chair, seemingly lost in thought.

"Hey, Leo," Lucas called out. "Finished your music appreciation session?"

Leonardo grinned sheepishly. "Sorry about that. I get carried away sometimes."

The three of them fell into easy conversation as the sun began to set. Hours slipped by unnoticed, the backdrop of the Bahamian beach adding to the surreal quality of their impromptu gathering.

As night fell, Leonardo bid them farewell, promising to catch up again soon. The next morning, Lucas and Jennifer scanned the beach, but there was no sign of their fellow actor.

Shrugging it off, they set out to explore the islands. They marveled at the vibrant colors of Nassau's architecture, snorkeled in the crystal-clear waters of Exuma, and wandered through the lush gardens of the Versailles Gardens and French Cloister.

Unbeknownst to them, a telephoto lens captured their moments of bliss from afar. Within hours, social media exploded with images of the couple enjoying their tropical getaway.

Fans in the States went into a frenzy. "Lucas and Jennifer spotted in the Bahamas!" became a topic. Travel sites saw a surge in searches for flights to Nassau.

But by the time the first wave of eager fans touched down on Bahamian soil, Lucas and Jennifer were already on a plane back to New York.

As the calendar flipped from December to January, the holiday cheer gave way to the bustle of the new year. Lucas bid a bittersweet farewell to Jennifer, promising to meet her parents soon. However, the thought of introducing her to his own family remained a distant, complicated prospect due to his strained relationship with his father and stepmother.

With Jennifer gone, Lucas found himself drawn to a familiar ritual - perusing the Sundance Film Festival lineup. It had become an annual tradition for him since 2010, a way to keep his finger on the pulse of independent cinema.

As he scrolled through the short film section, a title caught his eye: "Whiplash." A jolt of recognition shot through him. The director's name confirmed his suspicions - this was indeed the precursor to the acclaimed film from his previous life.

Excitement bubbled up inside him. Without hesitation, he dialed Neil's number.

"Neil, I'm going to Sundance," Lucas announced as soon as the call connected.

Neil's confusion was palpable. "Sundance? But you don't have any films screening this year."

"I know, I know," Lucas replied, his voice brimming with determination. "I want to go as an audience member. Incognito."

"Incognito?" Neil echoed, skepticism evident in his tone.

"Trust me on this," Lucas insisted. "There's a short film I need to see."

Neil sighed, recognizing the resolve in Lucas's voice. "Alright, if you're sure. But why all the secrecy?"

Lucas paused, choosing his words carefully. "I want to see it without any preconceptions. And... I want to meet the director. This could be an incredible opportunity."

As he ended the call, Lucas's mind raced with possibilities.

Lucas stepped into Liza's restaurant, his disguise carefully crafted to avoid recognition. Despite his efforts, Liza's eyes lit up with recognition the moment he entered. She approached him with a knowing smile.

"Nice try, Lucas," she whispered, leading him to a secluded table.

As they settled in, Lucas inquired about Leo. Liza's expression softened. "He's in Europe with his girlfriend. Seems to be having a good time."

The conversation shifted to Lucas's relationship with Jennifer. As he shared details of their recent getaway, Liza listened attentively, a flicker of something - perhaps sadness - passing over her face.

"I'm happy for you both," she said, her smile not quite reaching her eyes. Before Lucas could probe further, Liza excused herself, citing a need to check on the kitchen.

When she returned, their conversation drifted to lighter topics. Time slipped by unnoticed until Lucas realized he needed to leave. With a warm goodbye, he exited the restaurant, his disguise still intact.

Back in his apartment, Lucas's gaze fell on the stack of scripts on his desk. "A Star is Born," his own writing, sat at the top. Beneath it, several other projects vied for attention, including "The Artist." The director's persistent contact reminded Lucas of the project's impending start in a few months.

Lucas settled into his favorite armchair, the script for "The Artist" open on his lap. His fingers traced the edges of the pages, a habit he'd developed over years of studying roles. As he began to read, a familiar urge tugged at the back of his mind - the instinct to slip into his "Mind Workshop" and meticulously craft every nuance of the character.

But this time, Lucas resisted.

He leaned back, closing his eyes for a moment. The "Mind Workshop" had been an invaluable cheat that had helped him deliver performances beyond his years. But now, after numerous critically acclaimed roles, Lucas felt a new challenge calling to him.

"How good am I really?" he murmured to himself, opening his eyes to stare at the ceiling. "Without the crutch, without the perfect practice... can I still deliver?"

A mix of excitement and nervousness bubbled in his chest. It was a risk, certainly. The "Mind Workshop" had been his safety net, ensuring flawless performances time and time again. But Lucas knew that true growth often came from stepping out of one's comfort zone.

He made a mental compromise. Perhaps he'd use the "Mind Workshop" once in his next project, just to get a feel for the character. But beyond that, he'd rely on his accumulated experience, his instincts, and his raw talent.
