"Hello, Tina Cross," I said as the 3rd year Ravenclaw introduced herself.
"Hi, I'm a cellist, but I can play the bass too," she seemed peppy.
"Okay, play song one for us", I told her.
Like Oswald, she nailed the first song.
"And song two?" I asked.
She struggled a bit, but it was on beat.
"Thank you, Tina. We will let you know", I said.
"Thoughts?" I asked when she left.
"Not as good as Oswald, but better than the others we've seen today." Grant sighed.
Seamus walked in. "That's the last of the bassists", he said. "Do you want the singers next?".
I sighed. "Yeah, let's go."
Seamus left, and Tina walked back in.
I chuckled. "Going for both parts?" I asked.
"Yup?" She smiled at me.
"Okay, let's see what you got." I handed her the lyrics. She read over them and looked up at me.
"This is a good song", she said. "You wrote this?".
I nodded. "Okay, Grant, take it away".
The slow, melodic music from the piano filled the room.
Tina opened her mouth, and a beautiful voice sang out.
•Hello by adele•
♫Hello, it's me
I was wondering if, after all these years, you'd like to meet
To go over everything
They say that time's supposed to heal ya, but I ain't done much healing♫
Now, her voice wasn't equal to Adele's, but she had a quality to it I couldn't place.
♫Hello, can you hear me?
I'm in California dreaming about who we used to be
When we were younger and free
I've forgotten how it felt before the world fell at our feet♫
I closed my eyes and listened to her voice, falling into the song.
♫There's such a difference between us
And a million miles♫
I nodded my head to the beat.
♫Hello from the other side
I must've called a thousand times
To tell you I'm sorry for everything that I've done
But when I call, you never seem to be home♫
I've never wanted an oversized chair that spins at the push of a button more than this moment. Power is what her voice contained.
♫Hello from the outside
At least I can say that I've tried
To tell you I'm sorry for breaking your heart
But it don't matter, it clearly doesn't tear you apart anymore♫
I wish I had written the rest of the song for her, but this is all we had. After it was done, I clapped "good good. We will let you know, Tina," I said.
As she left, before we could call the next student, Professor Lockhart barged in.
"Sorry, professor, the auditions are for students only," I said
"Oh yes, obviously," Gilderoy said, "but I came to offer you a gig."
"We're listening," I said after looking at Tim and Grant.
"Let's say in a month just before Halloween," he said. "Of course, I will join you on stage, so prepare a song for me." With that, he walked away before we could say no.
The auditions continued. Most had lovely voices, but either weren't what I was looking for or couldn't sing on tune or beat. After the singers, we listened to another five people play different instruments, but I didn't get any inspiration from them.
"So? Final thoughts." I asked,
"I say we just accept Tina Cross", said Grant, "as bassists and singer."
"What about Oswald," said Tim, "and that Olivia girl."
"Oswald was good; Olivia just kept winking at you", I sighed. "Did Oswald seem a bit too smug to any of you?" I asked.
"Yeah, that's why I suggest Tina Cross as our new band member", Grant said.
"Agreed," I said. There was something about her voice that entrapped me.
"Yeah, okay," Tim said with a sigh. "Olivia probably won't be happy," he whispered.
"Okay, so how are we going to get a bass guitar," Grant asked.
"Budrook," I said after a thought ", I'm sure he could arrange it."
"so who gets to tell her?" Tim asked.
"I can do it", Grant said, "unless you want to do it, fearless leader." he looked at me.
"No, you can," I said. "I'll get a start on the order. I'm going to need to do more rune work."
That night, I sent a letter to Gringotts so they could do some shopping for me. We sat around the dorm chatting, passing around ideas for the gig; this would be Tina's first gig with us, so we needed to train her in a few songs within a month.
"I think we're missing the major problem," Grant said.
"Lockhart?" I asked.
"he did say he would join us on stage and have a song for him," Grant said, exasperated.
"yeah, I was thinking about that; if he wants to be on stage, I assume he wants to sing a song", Tim said.
"But what song?" Grant asked.
"something to match his ego?" I joked asked. "No, I have it." I jumped out of bed and grabbed a cassette I bought as a joke.
"Tell me, do you think you could play this?"
Grant and Tim listen with mixed faces.
"Yeah, but why it's not a very good song, it's okay", Grant said
"I mean, I can play it, but I kind of don't want to," Tim added.
"I think Lockhart will go for it." I smiled a sinister smile.
It was Wednesday morning when 3 owls carrying a package disturbed my breakfast. Unwrapping it, I found a suitcase and a letter.
Reading the letter, I learned the suitcase had a small extension charm to store my purchases. 'Bludrook earned his bonus once again.' I would do the inscription tonight, and then we could practise a setlist.
