Chapter 1: The Beginning
"Someone's here!", Momonga shouts as he immediately stands up, looking at the empty seats, his heart beating faster at the prospect of one of his guildmates being back. Could they have seen the email? Are they actually here-
His thoughts are interrupted by a familiar glow enveloping one of the seats near his. The Overlord realises someone is teleporting inside the room. Once the light died down, the Overlord saw the all-too-familiar figure of-
"Touch-san!", Momonga exclaimed, running towards the player.
Indeed, it was the Paladin of pure silver who had appeared. Although lacking his signature divine gear and in his Citin form, Momonga could never forget the first friend he had made in this game.
The [World Champion] of Alfheim, an extremely rare and unique class given only to the strongest players in Yggdrasil, Touch Me was the personification of the word "Justice". Being a cop in the real world, the Paladin was a righteous person who would always stand in the way of evil, jumping headfirst into danger if it meant saving anyone in need. In this regard, Momonga met Touch Me when the latter saved the Skeleton player from players hunting him during his early days. The two immediately became friends and later formed the group known as [Nine's Own Goal], which later became the now [Ainz Ooal Gown].
"Ah, Momonga-san, I knew you'd be here.", Touch Me says as Momonga immediately hugs his friend, the paladin being caught off guard by the sudden gesture. After regaining his composure, they remained hugging each other for a while as the paladin realised how much seeing him back meant to the Overlord.
He finally let go after what felt like an eternity to the skeleton player. "I'm glad you're the first to come back, Touch-san. I was beginning to lose hope here."
"The first one?", Touch Me asks as he looks around the room, "Ah, it seems I came here early. Shouldn't be long till the others arrive."
"The others? What do you mean-"
As if on cue, 3 more pings go off in Momonga's UI, followed by 3 balls of light appearing in different parts of the room. As the lights begin to enlarge and take different shapes, three more figures make their appearance.
"My my…Nazarick still stands, eh?" As the glow disappeared behind him, the first figure said, "I honestly thought our base would've been overrun long ago."
The Demon of Disaster Ulbert Alain Oodle makes his presence known as he looks around the room, waves of nostalgia hitting him when looking at the place he once called home. Memories of all the discussions the guild had flashed before his eyes. This was where he and Touch Me often butt heads over the most minor decisions.
Skin as grey as ash, horns protruding out of his head, and hands with claws as nails, the humanoid goat radiated an aura of evil even without his divine gear.
The player was obsessed with the word "evil" the most out of everyone in the guild. His chuuni tendencies often lead to him acting as a villain, which fits the guild's entire concept of "evil heteromorphs" that so many other players despised. Along with his rare class [World Disaster], Ulbert was a powerful magic caster equipped with Yggdrasil's most devastating spells.
"Of course, you'd think that way. Nothing positive ever came out of that head of yours." the second figure said as he began surveying his surroundings. Oh, how long it had been since Peroroncino had last seen his friends. It seems the others couldn't make it. His eyes fixate on the seat designated for his friends Flatfoot and Suratan, staring at the cold seats longingly, remembering the antics they used to come up with.
The one hailed as the Winged King of Explosive Strikes had quit long ago as his job as an H-material reviewer had no longer been sustainable, and he needed to look for actual work. His sudden decision to quit had left Momonga devastated, but now, seeing his friend erased all the sadness Momonga had in his heart.
Unlike Ulbert, who radiated darkness, the birdman shone as bright as the sun, courtesy of all the real-life money he had spent to "add more aesthetic" to his avatar. The 4-winged white avian still looked majestic despite not being clad in his golden divine gear, which he had spent even more money on for the "sparkling designs", as he liked to call it. It was an eventful day in the guild when his sister discovered how much Pero had spent on cosmetic effects.
"Have some faith in Momonga onii-chan, Ulbert-san!" a more high-pitched feminine voice spoke this time, "You know how much this base meant to him. He would never let it come to harm."
The Slime Shield Bukubukuchagama was the last player to step out of the light. Unlike the other three newcomers, the pinkish slime player looked the same as before, as her divine gear was always absorbed inside her slime body. Like the other two who came just now, the player/voice actress also looked around the meeting room, recalling all the times she had spent trying to restrain her brother Peroroncino from doing "certain things" that would have gotten him banned.
As the lights finally faded out, Momonga was elated to see his friends right in front of him. They actually remembered. They didn't leave our home. Satoru is almost again brought to tears, although he's crying tears of happiness this time.
The pain, sadness, and despair in Satoru almost completely faded away, as if they never existed in the first place, as if his guild members had never left. Though a small part of him deep within could never forget the torment, for now, he would let it slide.
"Welcome back to Nazarick, my friends! As you can see, our guild still remains strong even after so many years!" the Overlord said, waving his hands around the room.
"And a splendid job you have done, my dear friend", Ulbert speaks, walking towards Momonga and pulling him into an embrace.
"Ah, 'ol bone boy! It's good to see you again!", Peroroncio gives the Overlord a fist bump after the latter separates himself from the embrace.
"It's good to see you too, birdbrain", Momonga chuckles, "It's good to see all of you again. Makes me glad to see you guys here after I sent that email."
"Of course, we would come!", Bukubukuchagama said, sliding towards the group, "We had this entire thing planned out where we would surprise you together, but Mr Paladin here got the timing wrong and teleported in early", She pointed at Touch Me, the Paladin rubbing the back of his head in embarrassment.
"Yeah, yeah, as if you almost didn't forget the date- OW!" Pero yelps as his sister smacks him on the head, the UI showing the number 10 to indicate the damage taken, "Why'd you do that!?"
"Don't mention that here!", His sister hissed.
"But you did for-", *smack* 20 'Critical hit' "HEY!"
As the siblings bicker amongst themselves, Ulbert turns towards Momonga
"So, did you have anything planned to do for the final day, O' great leader?" the Baphomet questions, his all familiar chuuni tendencies resurfacing. "Unless you want to stay at the tomb until the shutdown".
"Well…", Momonga replies, "I had set up some fireworks outside the tomb I wanted to watch together. Make the final day more memorable, you know?"
"Why are we standing around here then?" Pero says the siblings had finally stopped their argument, "The game is about to shut down soon. We should hurry".
They all check their timer [23:31:20]. There was less than half an hour left now.
"Before we head out, we should get some gear from the treasury. Don't want to risk dying immediately if we are engaged", Touch Me points at himself, showing his vulnerability without his armor.
"True. I don't wanna get jumped by those Seraphim punks on the last day if any of them even stayed till now," Pero said, remembering how many times he had died to those "pay-to-win" kids.
It had been a long time since Momonga had seen a member of the angelic guild. Similar to their own guild, it seemed that the kids from Seraphim had moved on to other games, seemingly the newer, better videogames that were available on the market.
Despite Seraphim's absence, other powerful players may still lurk around Helheim's marshes. If their chief strategist Punnito Moe were here, the Death Vine would have chewed them out for having gone outside without wearing any gear at all. Better to be safe than sorry.
"All of your old gear is in the treasury. We can go get it together", Momonga speaks. As long as we remove the rings before entering, those golems shouldn't ambush us… Is there anything else I'm forgetting?
…
Ah!
Suddenly remembering what else, or who else, was in the treasury, he corrects himself, "A-actually, you guys start teleporting outside! I'll bring your equipment there!"
Before any guildmates could reply, Momonga activates the [Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown] and teleports away, him too embarrassed to show his friends the NPC he had created during their absence.
"What was that about?" Buku asks Ulbert, the latter just shrugging in confusion.
"He most likely doesn't want us to waste time lingering around the treasury. He'll quickly grab our gear and meet us outside".
"We should all start heading out then", Everyone in the room turns to Touch Me, "We barely have enough time left as it is".
Activating their own [Ring of Ainz Ooal Gown], the group teleports outside to the tomb's entrance.
(The Swamps of Helheim)
Helheim housed the highest number of heteromorphic players out of the nine realms, as many sought refuge here to avoid being killed by players of other classes. Filled to the brim with mighty monsters and challenging dungeons only the most powerful players in the game ever dared to venture into. Such a place is where the Great Tomb of Nazarick was situated, under the blood-red sky, in a world devoid of life.
After waiting for a while, Momonga returns with all of their gear, everyone putting them on and beginning to follow their leader as he leads the way to the fireworks area.
He really did keep everyone's equipment all this time. Ulbert thought to himself, now donning a black suit and velvet cape with a red rose pinned on his left shoulder. A golden mask covers the right side of his face, with a beau on top of his head. The demon remembers telling the guild leader to sell his gear if he wanted to, but he didn't have the heart to sell it, instead keeping it in hopes that his friend would return to claim his gear one day.
The player Ulbert Alain Oodle had wanted to keep playing Yggdrasil since the game was the only place he felt his presence was desired. Coming from the bottom of society's ladder, the goat heteromorph had to choose reality over this game to work and keep living.
Guilt begins to take over Ulbert as he realises how alone Momonga must have felt running the entire guild alone, for how lonely it must have been for him to repeat the same tasks repeatedly without having anyone else to accompany him. The game must have become another prison for him if no one else was here. I truly am sorry Momonga-san.
The other guildmates weren't faring any better.
Touch Me, now in his silver armour and red cape that signified his position as a [World Champion] (The armour given to him by the developers to commemorate his crowning as champion), didn't seem fazed at all. Still, underneath the armour, hints of regret were beginning to show. I became too occupied with my family and my job. That doesn't excuse what I have done. I should have joined occasionally…
Peroroncino truly felt like scum. Donning his golden armaments that further shined his already "majestic style", the Avain wasn't all that happy with himself as he was sulking behind.
He had joined wholly expecting their leader to pour his hatred over them, to condemn them for leaving him alone for so long, but the first thing he received from his friend was a fist bump and words that genuinely conveyed how happy he was to see the birdman. You truly are a good person Momonga-san.
Buku was feeling less guilty than her brother. Her avatar had undergone zero changes, even in her armour, as her slime body absorbed her set, giving her the additional stats without any visible changes.
Her job as a voice actress did mean more to her than Yggdrasil, but it doesn't mean she didn't feel bad for not joining sometimes just to check up on the skeleton. You're a good person Momonga-onii san, she thinks, sharing her brother's thoughts.
While the guild members were lamenting their departure from the game for so long, it seemed their leader had paid no mind to their long absence. Instead, he seemed to welcome them back with open arms, something each felt they would've never done if they were in the Skeleton's place.
"We're here", Momonga spoke, bringing them all back from their thoughts as they arrived at their destination.
Having had a lot of free time in the game after checking through the tomb daily, Momonga often found himself flying around Helheim as he discovered new areas he never knew existed. One such place was the area they are currently on.
The Skeleton player had chosen a small island on the swamp to hold the light show, most of the island already being covered with cylindrical objects that would throw the fireworks skywards. Touch Me was amazed at the thousands of cylindrical matters occupying the island. How long did it take for him to set this all up!?
If only he knew the thousand more firework launchers Momonga had stored in his inventory, him getting bored of placing the launchers after a certain point.
Momonga pulled a stick-like object from his inventory, holding it in the hand that didn't carry the guild weapon. In his frantic rush to the treasury, the leader had forgotten to place it back at the Cherry Blossom Sanctuary, the other guildmates not noticing the staff as they were distracted by their thoughts after seeing their equipment. Punnito Moe would have ripped them a new one if he had seen the Guild weapon exposed to the outside world.
"Let's do this!", He yells as he presses the button, his sudden shout catching the others off-guard.
The cylinders release the fireworks into the sky, each exploding in different brilliant sparks of light. The guild members let out "Oohs" and "Aahs" at the sudden display of lights shining in the night sky.
"Hey, isn't that my symbol?" Pero points at one of the illuminations, his insignia brightening the sky with a flash of gold before it faded away, only to be replaced by many more.
"I had created custom fireworks with the time I had", Momonga speaks, his own symbol exploding into sparks of purple light, "I wanted to show the legacy of our guild one last time".
The members stand and watch the fireworks show underneath the night sky, mesmerised by the lightwork rarely seen in their smog-filled world.
…
"Tabula Smaragdina", Ulbert breaks the silence, pointing to the symbol of the Great Alchemist as it appears in the sky, the dark blue blending in stunningly with Momonga's purple.
"Warrior Takemikazuchi", Touch Me says as the emblem of his friend and rival lights up, red colours akin to the Nephilim's samurai armour appearing in his vision.
"Herohero", Bukubukuchagma says as she sees her fellow slime's crest. The poor guy wanted to come but had to refuse the invitation at the end because of his work.
"Suratan", Peroroncino notices the Sasquatch Berserker's insignia, their plans of making a Nazarick Academy now a distant dream.
"Amanomahitotsu", Momonga says, seeing the symbol of Nazarick's blacksmith and founding members illuminate the sky with an orange light and disappear soon after.
"Ankoro Mocchi Mochi", A crimson colour that reflected the Werewolf player's fur.
"Punnito Moe", A light green which reminded them of the Death Vine's visage.
"Blue Planet", A darker green showcasing the Satyr's love for nature.
"Garnet"
"Ra Ra Rasputin"
"Bellriver"
"Nishikienrai"
The remaining members call out the names of their guildmates as their respective crests show up in the sky, many emblems appearing in various colours. Once all the missing 36 members' names have been spoken, everyone silently stares at the night sky, wishing more of their friends could've been here to enjoy this moment together.
As the fireworks slowly begin to thin out, the members still watch on, hoping they could watch this scenery forever. But alas, a notification pops up in everyone's UI, followed by the robotic voice of the developer's mail bot many had grown to despise.
To all players,
We hope you have enjoyed the fireworks show we held across all nine realms. This notification has been sent to remind you that the game will officially shut down in 5 minutes. Thank you for playing Yggdrasil.
With regards,
The Development Team
"Shitty devs! Won't even let us enjoy the scenery!", Ulbert yells, shaking his fists at the sky. The rest of the guildmates laughed.
"Being hated till the very end", Touch Me chuckles.
The members of Ainz Ooal Gown watch the fireworks die out as the game enters its final minute. As all good things must come to an end, they prepare themselves for what is to come.
"Well, guys… it's been fun". Momonga turns towards his friends, "I'm really thankful for all of you having taken your time to join me tonight".
"Don't sweat it, buddy! We knew how much this meant to you. There's no way we wouldn't have come!" Pero says, slapping the leader on the back.
"I agree", Touch Me speaks, "This guild is like a second family to me. Even if I had work today, I would've still tried to find a way to join nonetheless."
Ulbert almost retorts like the old times but lets it slide to not ruin the moment, "Indeed. Yggdrasil is a place I've cherished for so long; I would have traded the world for it if it meant I could stay here longer, friend Momonga."
"Let's hope there's a Yggdrasil 2 that comes out soon. Maybe there we could all play together like the old times", Buku said, despite knowing she most likely wouldn't have the time to join. Anything that makes our leader happy.
Unconsciously, Bukubukuchagma grabs Momonga and Peroroncino's hand with her slimy appendages. Ulbert stares at her.
"Holding hands? Really? We're supposed to be the evil heteromorph guild."
"I know, right?", Peroroncino adds, "Seems really gay to me-" *SMACK* 50 "FINE! I'll do it!"
"C'mon, you two! Do it for our leader. You know how much it means to him."
Ulbert reluctantly agrees. Not wanting to incur the slime's wrath, he holds Peroroncino's free hand, Touch Me holding Ulbert's.
Ulbert stares at the paladin's hand for a moment but says nothing. Of course, it had to be this bastard's hand at the end. He smiles as he shakes his head.
I'll genuinely miss these moments. Momonga thinks to himself as he looks at his friends.
[23:59:50]
If only we could keep playing like this forever… Momonga does not notice the hand pulling him towards something darker.
[23:59:54]
[23:59:55]
"Glory to Ainz Ooal Gown!", Momonga yells out, closing his eyes as he braces himself for the end.
"Glory to Ainz Ooal Gown!", The rest of his guildmates follow.
[23:59:58]
[23:59:59]
…
SAVE HIM!
