~ RIG ~
“Rig, focus.” Mack stared at me, frustrated, but patient.
I blinked and tore my thoughts back from the obsessive thoughts about Cara and wondering what she was doing and if she was okay.
Mack rolled his eyes. His dark hair had fallen over his eyes. I wasn’t sure if he’d lost weight, or it was just the dark circles under his eyes making them look more sunken.
A tidal wave of guilt washed over me from knowing that my friend had been so tortured for so long and I was only just noticing because he’d finally told me.
“Mack—”
“Cara’s fine,” he said quickly. “You know she’s fine. Natalie isn’t going to let anything happen to her. And they’re doing… girl things. She’s not going anywhere. Let’s just get this done.”
I held his gaze for a moment, wanting to communicate the things I knew and understood. But there was a wariness in his gaze, like he knew where my mind was going and he didn’t want to talk about it.
