Capítulo 8: Quantum Wave Speed Reading

"Eh? So, are you asking me to repay the favor so quickly? Hayden Crystal was a bit puzzled. She suddenly realized that she seemed to have fallen into the pit she dug herself. But when she saw the sweet smile on the boy's face, the female shop assistant immediately changed her perspective.

Upon careful thought, working with such a handsome boy wasn't too bad. Besides, he had the same talent as the famous Newt Scamander, which should make taking care of magical creatures quite convenient. As a result, Kevin found his first job, taking care of animals in the magical creature shop.

Since it was just a part-time position, the working hours were variable, typically lasting 3-5 hours per day, depending on the day's tasks. The daily wage was 3 sickles. The conversion rates in the wizarding world were quite complicated: 1 galleon equaled 17 sickles, and 1 sickle was equivalent to 29 knuts. Kevin strongly suspected it was all part of a massive prank to annoy these silly wizards since they burned books and buried scholars along with their mathematical knowledge.

In any case, for a child laborer, the pay was decent. Calculating for a month, he'd make 5 galleons and 8 sickles. In two months, he would have earned back the money for his wand.

"First, let's begin with cleaning the living quarters for the animals," the shop assistant demonstrated in front of Kevin, raising her wand and casting the cleaning spell "Scourgify." Instantly, the cat's cage in front of them was clean, with all the cat hair and waste automatically flying into a bin. "Try it, Mr. Green," the shop manager said. "At first, you may only be able to clean a small area. But if a more powerful wizard uses it, you can clean an entire room at once."

Kevin nodded and raised his wand, pointing it at another cage containing shovels: [Scourgify]! With exceptional insight, he had succeeded in casting the spell on his first attempt, leaving the shop assistant stunned.

"Um, you're learning so quickly. Have you used this spell before at home? Well, then let's move on to the Tornado Cleaning Charm. Unlike the Scourgify, this spell is better suited for liquid waste."

As it was his first day on the job, Kevin had to observe and learn from Hayden. He was busy until 4 o'clock in the afternoon before returning to the Leaky Cauldron.

"How was your day, young man?" Old Tom asked with concern. "Very good, Mr. Tom. I've found a job."

"Oh, that's wonderful!" Tom nodded and handed Kevin a glass of butterbeer. "This is to celebrate your first job; consider it on the house."

"So, what kind of work did you find?" After Kevin had a big gulp of butterbeer, Tom asked.

"I'm part-time at a magical creature shop."

"Magical creatures? Well, that's good. What exactly do you do there?"

"Feeding, grooming, cleaning... everything, but the main job is to clean their cages. These little guys are not very hygienic; they often mess up their living spaces."

"Ah, that doesn't sound like an easy job." Old Tom shook his head, as he could imagine how dirty the work environment might be.

"For a young wizard like me who hasn't even started Hogwarts, it's good enough. I can learn a lot about magical creatures and have picked up some new spells as well."

He swung his wand: [Scourgify]! Instantly, the uncleaned table turned spotless.

"By doing this, my job at Mr. Tom's place becomes much simpler."

Ah, this child is still eager for me to find him a job.

Old Tom realized that he was beginning to like this kid; being so mature, optimistic, and proactive in the face of difficulties. A child like him would undoubtedly go on to achieve great things.

As a result, in the following days, Kevin's part-time career began. The work at the magical creature shop was tedious and challenging. There were a wide variety of animals here: chizpurfles, fire crabs, black rats, owls, ravens, cats of various colours, Pygmy Puffs, and even a Knarl."

Each animal had different dietary habits and living behaviours, so the work of feeding and caring for them needed to be tailored to their specific needs. For most people, trying to remember the habits of each animal would be a challenge. But one of the byproducts of Kevin's extraordinary insight was his absolute memory. Remembering what different cats and dogs ate was a piece of cake. At worst, Kevin could just ask them directly. Like drinking water, it was a simple matter to him whether the little animals were well-fed or thirsty. As a result, the young shop assistant was quick to praise his work and believed that his abilities were no worse than those of an ordinary adult wizard. However, Kevin was not content with just that.

The daily work in the magical creature shop took Kevin about 2-3 hours to complete, leaving him with plenty of time to seek out more challenges. Compared to the highly urbanized Muggle society, the wizarding world remained relatively underdeveloped and had a small population. It still operated more on a society based on personal connections rather than formal records. Now, Kevin had realized the benefits of having someone vouch for you. After receiving Hayden Crystal's approval at the magical creature shop, other stores on the street began to relax their restrictions on him gradually. Subsequently, he found work at 'Flourish and Blotts' and also at 'Slags Jig's Apothecary'.

This not only increased his daily wage to 8 sickles but also exposed him to a great deal of knowledge that couldn't be learned from books. For example, at 'Slags Jig's Apothecary', Kevin learned the basics of potion-making, including how to prepare ingredients like cutting them into slices, grinding them, or extracting juices. To do so, he learned the cutting spell. After a summer of working in these places, Kevin believed that he was well-prepared to avoid trouble with the Bat-Bogey Hex in future Potions classes.

Additionally, Kevin got to witness many advanced potion ingredients such as Erumpent horns, Diricawl feathers, and the skin of African tree snakes. Of course, he only learned about their properties and uses and didn't personally handle them. With his current level of wages, he couldn't afford to make mistakes.

In general, the work at the apothecary was as dirty and tedious as the other jobs. Every time he left the shop, he always smelled funny, ranging from Murtlap tentacle mucus to Flobberworm mucus and Bubotuber pus. He had to use the [Scourgify] spell multiple times to get clean.

In comparison, the work at 'Flourish and Blotts' was much cleaner. Most of Kevin's tasks there involved organizing books. He would retrieve a particular book from the stockroom and place it on the shelves or help customers find specific, rather obscure books. The work was simple, and sometimes, during his downtime, he could borrow a few books to read. But, for Kevin, this job turned out to be the most rewarding one. In the course of his work, he gained insights into several new spells:

"[Copy charm]: Duplicates a document into another book also, allows diction to be transcribed."

"[Read Magic]: Allows reading and comprehending magical text on books and items."

"[Understanding Languages]: Enables understanding the speech of creatures or reading previously unreadable text."

"[Scholar's Touch]: Permits absorption of knowledge from books through touch, as if they had read personally however, you have only a surface level-understanding of the knowledge. Memorised not understood."

All these spells were convenient for learning. [Understanding Languages] allowed Kevin to understand all common languages and made those who claimed to be fluent in many languages seem knowledge-poor in comparison. [Read Magic] allowed Kevin to read magical text with great excitement, especially when he was an average student.

[Scholar's Touch] allowed him to store knowledge from a book in his mind with a mere touch, making it a true quantum speed-reading. This storage, however, was passive, and he needed further time to understand and integrate the knowledge fully. But that was more than enough. With the help of his extraordinary insight, [Understanding Languages,] [Read Magic,] and [Scholar's Touch] became passive skills, which he could use without the need to cast them actively. Afterward, Kevin started to cherish his work at 'Flourish and Blotts' even more. He only needed to touch the books to store their content in his mind.

This ability was essentially free knowledge acquisition, so Kevin spent most of his time wandering around the bookstore, like a scanner trying to store the entire stock in his brain. For this reason, he even considered quitting his other two part-time jobs and focusing on 'Flourish and Blotts'. However, because summer vacation was still long, he decided against it. As Kevin continued to work, time flew by, and before he knew it, the back-to-school season was approaching.
