Capítulo 8: Chapter 8: Mother

(Night)

From that day on, my (Night's) workload increased again.

Every morning, I had to go to Baron's mansion to pick up Lotte for school. She was a first-grader in primary school.

Then, after school, I had to go back to the school to pick her up, and I couldn't go home until I had spent enough time playing with her.

Of course, considering the salary of 30,000 Cradles, this amount of work was negligible, so I was quite content with it.

After receiving my first month's salary, I gave 20,000 Cradles to my mother and kept a full 10,000 as spending money.

Luckily, I have a very open-minded mother who didn't insist on me handing over my entire paycheck.

In reality, my mother wouldn't have asked for the money if I hadn't voluntarily handed it over.

In any case, with 10,000 Cradles as spending money, I enjoyed a spree of shopping and lived the second most affluent life among the kids.

Well, the first place went to Lotte.

This distant relative of the baron lived better than Lord Vittok's own son. There seemed to be no limit to her allowance. The son of Lord Vittok only received 100 Cradles a day!

Alright, up until this point, if you think I didn't notice anything was amiss, then you really underestimate me.

It's pretty clear that Lotte's identity is far from ordinary.

Even though she had sought refuge with the Baron's family, there was no sense of dependency. The Baron and his family treated her with excessive respect.

But what truly convinced me of Lotte's extraordinariness was another incident I observed as Yue.

It happened about a month and a half after my male self met Lotte. I witnessed Baron Vittok visiting our house.

Yes, he came to the Duke's residence.

Father (Yue father) received him solemnly in the reception room, and security was heightened. I was even stopped from entering.

Then, the next day, Father announced that during the school break, our family would be going on a vacation to the town of Vittok.

It was easy to surmise that Father's decision was influenced by Lotte.

My mind entertained a few hypotheses, and I became cautious.

In a position, fulfill one's duties. Even though I was just a knight accompanying playtime, as Lotte's current knight who received a proper salary, I felt it necessary to learn about Lotte's true identity and gauge Father's attitude towards her.

(Night)

"Night, time to eat. What are you lost in thought about?"

A gentle voice called out at the dinner table, snapping me out of my contemplation as Night. I looked up and met her gaze.

Pink hair, pink irises, youthful beauty - she appeared to be around twenty years old. She was my mother, Fay.

Our family lived in a village called Jili, and my mother worked at the adventurer's guild in town as a counter girl. She had countless admirers.

Well, I frequently witnessed men coming over to our house, trying to curry favor with me, and the number often exceeded two digits.

It was said that my mother used to be an adventurer herself, but after having me (Night), she retired and settled in the village of Jili. She took up a position as a counter girl at the adventurer's guild in the town of Vittok.

Although she wasn't earning as much as before, it was safer work.

I thought it was quite nice, actually.

"Nothing much, Mom. I was just thinking about Lotte."

"A few months apart, and you've already moved on, Night. I pity poor Laphae."

My mother playfully wiped her eye as if feigning tears. If she hadn't worn that teasing smile, I might have actually believed she was crying.

"Isn't it a bit odd to use the term 'moved on' for your eight-year-old son?"

"Doesn't feel odd at all. Who made my kid so precocious from a young age?" Mom laughed and continued, "When you started school at the age of five, I thought I'd see you crying because you couldn't find your mom. But the whole class was crying, and you were standing out from the crowd. Not only did you not cry, you were even flirting with Laphae. It doesn't seem like the behavior of a child."

"What's 'flirting' supposed to mean? I was clearly comforting Laphae."

"The scariest thing about you is how you can charm a girl unconsciously. My little Night is truly a natural charmer."

I couldn't be bothered to respond further to my mom, who spent her days teasing me.

But she had no intention of letting me off the hook.

"Hey, Night, which one do you want to choose in the end?"

"What do you mean by 'choose'?"

"I mean Laphae and Lotte. Which one do you want to marry?"

"... "

I looked at her expressionlessly, and after a moment of silence, I calmly said, "I want to choose you as my wife."

"Really, Night, you always say such sweet things."

Blushing, Mom covered her face and playfully said, "But once Night grows up, Mom will be old. Night will surely find Mom annoying, umm..."

I took a bite of food and immediately stood up, covering her mouth to stop her, choking on my words.

In what past life did I accumulate such karma to have a mom like this!?
