Capítulo 31: Chapter 31 - The Fury Of The Battlefield

The night deepened with the moonlight shining upon the blood-covered battlefield, the cold air brushing against their wounded bodies. Seraphina, her violet eyes glowing within the darkness of night, moved through the chaos with a swiftness that surprised even herself.

The rusty blade she had picked up was now stained with blood and flesh, but it served its purpose well enough.

She stood near the group, her eyes glancing around the battlefield as she assessed the situation. The knights were holding their ground, but the sheer number of the bandits was overwhelming for just two knights.

They had to end this quickly before they were overwhelmed by the numbers; stamina was not on their side. Davanai was taking longer than she expected, she didn't know when he might come back.

A bandit lunged at her from the side, swinging his sword with reckless abandon as if he only cared about killing her. Seraphina ducked and rolled, her agility allowing her to avoid the strike.

As she came up, she thrust her blade into the man's stomach and ripped it to the side, feeling the resistance of flesh and bone as she tore the man's stomach out, causing him to collapse to the ground.

Another bandit charged at her, but this time she was ready. She sidestepped his attack and slashed across his back, sending him sprawling to the ground with a roar of pain.

The apprentice knight, fighting valiantly beside her, was doing his best to protect Seraphina and the others. However, he was clearly struggling against the overwhelming numbers of bandits attacking him. He parried a blow aimed at Seraphina, saving her from a potentially deadly strike.

"Thank you!"

Seraphina shouted over the noise of battle, slashing towards an incoming bandit and kicking him back.

"Stay close, my lady. I need to ensure your safety."

The man replied with a grim expression on his face as he covered Seraphina's side.

The bandits were relentless, and their attacks came from all sides without rest. Seraphina's muscles began to burn from the exertion, and her bones ached from all the fighting.

But she pushed through the pain, her training and instincts guiding her movement as she danced along the battlefield. She slashed, parried, and struck out with precisions, each movement becoming more fluid as she fought.

She was growing more experienced as she fought, her mind storing everything she encountered.

Suddenly, she heard a scream from behind her.

Turning, she saw Lucy, a bandit looming over her with a twisted grin and a blade in hand. Without thinking, Seraphina dashed forward with her blade in hand.

She threw herself between Lucy and the bandit, the man's blade striking her instead of the target it was originally meant for—taking the blow for the girl.

The pain was immediate and intense, as the bandit's blade cut into her shoulder, breaking through her skin and causing blood to flow out. Gritting her teeth, Seraphina ignored the searing pain and drove her blade into the bandit's chest.

Twisting it and dragging it upwards to ensure that he wouldn't be able to survive past that strike—ending him for good.

"Seraphina!"

Lucy cried out, her eyes wide with fear and concern as she saw the blood pouring from the wound. She moved to go closer to the girl, but Seraphina stopped her.

"I'm fine. Stay with the group, don't get caught alone."

Seraphina managed to say through clenched teeth, her voice strained from the pain.

Seeing Seraphina's injury, the apprentice knight fought even harder to keep the bandits away from the group. His sword flashed as he took down another bandit, however in his desperation to protect her, he left himself open.

A bandit took this advantage and stabbed into the man; driving a dagger into the man's side and twisting it as blood gushed out from the wound. While the bandit landed his blow, the apprentice knight slashed off his head before he was brought down.

"No!"

Seraphina's eyes widened as she saw the apprentice knight fall, his blood pooling around him as he couldn't keep going anymore. Seraphina dashed towards the fallen man; he may be dead but he still had a weapon on him.

Cutting through the bandits in her way or avoiding them, she slid across the ground and grabbed the man's sword. Now with a proper blade, she was able to better fight back, honoring the fallen knight's sacrifice.

Gunther, who had been surprisingly effective in combat but still injured, saw an opportunity to assist Seraphina. He slashed at an incoming bandit, driving him back, and then quickly turning to help Adrian and Annabeth fend off another attack.

Now down a person, they had a gap in their defensive circle that they needed to fill quickly otherwise they would be overwhelmed by the bandits.

"We need to end this now!"

Gunther shouted, his voice carrying over the clamor of battle.

Seraphina nodded, she knew they had to end the battle before it dragged on for too long, however, that was easier said than done.

Her eyes scanned the battlefield, noticing Davanai still locked in combat with the bandit leader and a few other bandits, their swords clashing with deadly force and tearing the trees around them apart.

The other bandits were starting to falter, some of them were losing their morale as they saw numerous of their comrades fall around them, but others still fought without care.

Using the last of her strength, Seraphina charged at the remaining bandits that still fought without care. Her movements were a blur as she struck out with precise and deadly blows.

She took down one after another, her glowing eyes were the only trace that could be seen as she moved around the battlefield.

She was injured a lot; cuts and slashes littered her body but she kept moving. Her goal was to deal so much damage at once, to kill so many at once, that the remaining bandits would stop attacking out of fear.

With a final, desperate push, the remaining knight and Gunther joined Seraphina in her plan. They managed to break through the bandits' ranks and push them back.

The leader, seeing his men falling, the numbers he started with now a mere fraction remaining, shouted for a retreat.

"Retreat! You, don't think this is over."

The man said, slipping into the cover of the trees and vanishing from the battlefield, the remaining bandits following after him.

Breathing heavily, Seraphina looked around at the aftermath of the battle. The ground was littered with bodies, and the air was thick with the scent of blood. She winced, falling to her knees as the pain all over her body made her unable to stay standing.

Davanai approached as he sheathed his sword. His face was a mixture of pride and concern as he helped her up.

"You fought well, Seraphina. I'm proud of you."

She nodded weakly, her exhaustion finally catching up to her.

"Thank you, brother. But we need to help the wounded."

Davanai agreed, and they quickly set about tending to the injured, including Seraphina. The apprentice knight was beyond saving, he had died a valiant death, and he would be buried a knight, but the other members of the group were mostly unharmed, thanks to Seraphina's efforts.

As they gathered their things, and made sure the carriage was fine to move; they prepared to continue their journey back.
