The gambling den, 'Gamblers' Haven', was cloaked in a hazy ambiance that evening, dimly lit and shrouded in a cloud of tension. Li Yang stepped in, instantly sensing that tonight was different. The usual hustle and bustle had given way to an atmosphere of anticipation. Gamblers had gathered around the central table, awaiting a unique showdown.
At one side of the table sat Red Phoenix, calmly shuffling the cards, her piercing gaze fixed on him. Li Yang took a deep breath and settled across from her.
"We'll play poker," Red Phoenix said tersely, beginning to deal.
Li Yang's heartbeat raced. Although he had observed poker games many times before, facing an expert like Red Phoenix was an entirely new challenge. Fortunately, he had a unique advantage: an eidetic memory. As the cards were shuffled, he tried to remember the position of each one, hoping his talent would provide an edge.
As the game progressed, it seemed his strategy was working. His memory indeed gave him an edge, helping him make decisions at critical moments. But, as is the nature of gambling, poker isn't just about the cards—it's also a psychological warfare between players.
Red Phoenix quickly picked up on Li Yang's exceptional ability. Every move she made, every decision, became more intricate, less predictable. Li Yang realized that while he could remember the cards, he couldn't anticipate Red Phoenix's strategy. She was ever-elusive; every time he felt he had an upper hand, she turned the tables with unexpected tactics.
More crucially, Li Yang found himself unable to control his expressions fully. Whenever he had good cards, a hint of smugness would flash in his eyes. In contrast, uncertainty flickered whenever his hand wasn't favorable.
Ultimately, after a round of intense gameplay, Li Yang was defeated.
Red Phoenix smiled slightly, "Your memory is impressive, but gambling isn't just about remembering cards. It's more about controlling oneself and reading the opponent."
Li Yang nodded, acknowledging his shortcomings.
"But you have potential," Red Phoenix added, "If you're willing, I can teach you more."
Li Yang lifted his gaze, determination evident in his eyes. He recognized this moment as a turning point in his life.
