Capítulo 83: Changed History

They fell into the water, luckily, it was deep enough to prevent a disastrous end if there were any reefs or obstacles when falling from such a height. Varion, embarrassingly, climbed to the shore, finally able to catch his breath.

Observing Varion, who sat on the side holding a knife, Royce grew angry, raising the muzzle and approaching. The scene wasn't surprising; Varion had been too calm throughout the journey, as if he knew everything.

"Tell me, what do you know? If you don't spill it...," Royce's threat was evident.

"...here? Aren't you afraid those things will catch up?"

Just as everyone had relaxed, the realization hit again. This place was dangerously close to the base of those alien creatures.

They began to move, but Varion positioned himself in the center, as if preventing any chance of escape. Why this precaution?

On a hill providing a clear view in all directions, Varion addressed them. As long as they held this high ground, they could resist many enemies.

"Can you talk now?"

Varion nodded, "Well, how do I put it... Do you know about the Yautja? The Predator Warrior is part of it." Seeing confused expressions, he continued, "Think of them as an alien civilization, a quite powerful one. But they have a peculiar tradition. When they're young adults, they prove their strength by hunting."

"Wait... hold on, did you say those things were just babies?" Stan tugged at his hair in disbelief.

"Don't be surprised; they have a lifespan of over 300 years, with the highest reaching about 500 years. Is a few dozen years old equivalent to our human teenage years?"

Royce glared at him, signaling not to interrupt, and urged Varion to continue, "I'm intrigued, go on."

Varion elaborated, "There are various races in the Predator civilization. Though they may look the same, there are differences. The one tied up in the camp was a regular Predator, or you could say, an ordinary individual. The one attacking us with the ion cannon was a specialized soldier."

"As for the creatures here, at least one is a Stalker Predator, and there's also a Falcon Predator, acting as their scouts. So, is this information useful to you?" Varion innocently looked at them, seemingly saying, "Surprised, aren't you?"

"How do you know so much?"

Varion shrugged, "I've dissected these things on Earth and captured them. Do you think I'm not familiar with them?"

Isabelle rolled her eyes, realizing why these creatures seemed familiar. It was in a mission briefing; someone had encountered them decades ago, and after an elite team encounter, only one survivor indicated that they lived alone.

There were three now, and Isabelle couldn't help but wonder if heaven was their next destination.

"You know about it too?" Royce asked her.

"Forget it, it was mentioned in a mission briefing. It's terrifying, but there seems to be an issue with their sight. They use mask equipment to scan several infrared images. Once they remove the equipment, their eyesight isn't great. Maybe that's a weakness we can exploit."

Stan gestured broadly with his hands, prompting a few amused smirks. "So, are we planning to swipe their masks, or should we stroll out and challenge them to a face-off like, 'Hey buddy, unmask yourself and let's settle this'?" The absurdity of the suggestion couldn't be ignored; facing off against one of those creatures alone would be nothing short of suicidal.

"Let's focus on getting out of here first," Royce interjected, his voice laced with urgency.

Surrounded by the dense foliage of the jungle, night descended, casting eerie shadows that seemed to morph the jungle into a gaping maw, ready to swallow them whole. Strangely, not a single chirp broke the silence, adding to the ominous atmosphere.

"Is everything prepared?" someone asked, their voice tinged with apprehension.

"Almost, but can we really defend against these things?" Hanzo's doubt hung heavy in the air, the unspoken fear lingering among them.

Time slipped away, each moment fraught with tension as they remained on edge, wary of any sudden movements in the shadows.

"Shhh," Isabel hushed, signaling to Royce and pointing towards the darkness. As their eyes adjusted, they caught a glimpse of movement, a chilling reminder that they were never truly alone.

"Is that it?" Royce whispered, his nerves on edge.

Varion shook his head, his expression grim. "No, this isn't the Predator we saw earlier. But it's definitely eyeing us."

Relief washed over Royce, though he couldn't explain why. "Damn it, why hasn't it attacked yet?" Nick's impatience was palpable, his grip on his weapon tightening.

"Hey, doc, it's your turn," someone called out, the urgency in their voice betraying the gravity of the situation.

The doctor hesitated for a moment before darting out of the trap, his fear palpable in the air. But before he could take a breath, the sound of heavy footsteps echoed behind him, a chilling reminder of the danger lurking in the shadows.

"Shoot!" someone yelled, the tension reaching its peak as they braced for the inevitable.

Isabelle's shot rang out, the monster staggering back from the impact.

"Is that the creature?" Royce turned to Varion for confirmation, his heart pounding in his chest.

"No, this isn't a Predator," Varion replied grimly, the weight of their predicament settling over them like a shroud.

As confusion filled the air, Royce raised his gun, scanning their surroundings for any sign of danger. But before he could react, a voice echoed from all directions, sending a chill down their spines. "I'm here..."

"It's here," Royce muttered, his senses alert as he lowered the gun, feeling the cool metal against his back. The imminent threat of a gun pressed into his spine was a familiar dance with mortality, one he had waltzed through for years.

An electric crackle cut through the tense air, and before them materialized a figure in peculiar attire. Gasps erupted from the group as the mysterious entity made a theatrical entrance.

"What the hell are you?" Royce demanded, eyeing the stranger cautiously.

The figure removed their mask, revealing a black man whose eyes casually surveyed the group, sizing them up like a lineup of Jokers. "What am I? I am a living being, a sentient being," he replied cryptically. "You guys are too loud. If I can hear your voices, those things can too. Acting like you're shouting, 'Here's the prey!' Ridiculous, like children looking for their mother."

"Who are you?" Royce pressed, his suspicion evident.

The black man, named Nolan, looked up with a sly grin. "Me? My name is Nolan, and I used to be a ranger, part of a bald eagle unit, similar to commandos."

"Come on, if you don't want to die," he added, urging them to move.

Varion observed Nolan with curiosity, noting the humanoid appearance lacking apparent intelligence. The being seemed more like a creature from a non-civilized planet, sparking Varion's fascination.

The doctor patted Varion on the shoulder, signaling the group to follow Nolan. They navigated the jungle under Nolan's guidance, winding through a confusing path that hinted at a deliberate attempt to confuse pursuers.

Finally, they reached a colossal machine parked in a clearing. "Is this a mining ship?" Varion inquired, his curiosity piqued.

Nolan turned back, surprised by the recognition. "This is a scientist," he scoffed dismissively, questioning the relevance of scientific endeavors in their dire circumstances.

They entered the ship, crawling through wiring pipes to find a cluttered space filled with various items. Nolan explained, "I've been here for about eight or maybe ten seasons. Those creatures capture humans for hunting, and I just survive here, making do with whatever I can find."

Isabelle's eyes gleamed with hope as she asked, "Do you know how to leave?"

Nolan chuckled, gesturing toward a set of clothes on the wall. "Leave? Did you hear what she said? She thinks it's too easy to just leave. Maybe it's like playing jump rope – humans can hop back to Earth in one leap."

Royce, undeterred, pressed further, "Do you know about those creatures? They must have a spaceship or something when they arrive here."

Nolan's laughter echoed through the cluttered space. "Spaceship? Definitely, there's one for sure, right there in that camp. See, I told you they can't see it. Haha... ha!" His words carried a hint of eccentricity as he continued to stare at a seemingly insignificant pile of objects, leaving the group to decipher the cryptic information he had shared.
