Capítulo 2: CHAPTER 2
Shen Tian panted loudly as he lay down on the ground right at the edge of the safe zone.
His heart was still beating really fast, knowing that he could've died so easily back then.
However, before he could celebrate his win of reaching the safe zone, a series of notifications from the system made him want to curse out loud again.
[[ Notification: Safe zone is now temporarily activated. Quest triggered. ]]
"Temporarily?!"
[[ Quest information: Congratulations host on reaching the safe zone. This safe zone is your safe haven against the zombies that are running rampant in this world. However, this safe zone is just temporarily activated. Within the next hour, the host must fulfill the quest requirements to permanently activate the safe zone.
Quest requirement: Deposit 3 crystal cores into the system terminal located at the center of the safe zone.
Building rewards: Base building, Base wall
Other rewards: 5 boxes canned meat, 5 boxes instant noodles, 5 sacks of rice, 5 gallons of drinkable water, 1 med kit ]]
Shen Tian was speechless after reading the quest requirement. The three crystal cores requirement meant that he needed to kill three zombies.
He looked at the bat that he was holding. It didn't look like it'll last for long.
He exhaled a deep breath in frustration, but he stopped himself from cursing out loud. It won't help him to tell the system "Go fuck yourself", after all.
After a couple of seconds of self-consolation, Shen Tian looked at the system screen again.
Since he needed to do the task within the hour, he had a couple of minutes to rest and observe his surroundings. Currently, he's on a road pathway with grass on both sides. Far ahead, he can see a thigh-high pillar, which the system labels as the system terminal. Guess that's where he needs to deposit the crystal cores he'll get.
Right outside the safe zone, he can see three slow-moving zombies. These may be the zombies who persisted in catching him. One of them is more sluggish in its movements than the others. With dent marks on its head, Shen Tian was sure that this was the zombie he smashed earlier.
They really don't die all that easily!
Shen Tian thought for a while and devised a plan for killing the three zombies. Basically, he needed to avoid a situation where he'll end up facing three zombies all at once.
After thinking hard about what to do, Shen Tian stood up and picked a stone at the roadside. He waited for the right timing when the zombie with the dented head is closer to the green zone and the two other zombies are farther away. He threw the stones to divert the attention of the two.
Of course, all three zombies' attention was attracted to the sound and they shuffled away from the green zone straight to the noise. The dented head zombie was much slower than the other. With its back turned against the safe zone, Shen Tian stepped out of the green area and quickly smashed the back of the zombie's head with all his might. Perhaps, because he now has an idea of how hard a zombie's head is, he was able to adjust his strength so that he can mash the zombie's head in three strikes.
The zombie fell down and Shen Tian stepped right back into the green zone.
The two zombies got attracted to Shen Tian's smell so they were shuffling right back, but now that Shen Tian was once again inside the safe zone, they were like headless flies. They lost their prey's scent so they just lurked around aimlessly.
Shen Tian went for the hit-and-run tactic when facing the remaining two zombies. When one of the zombies is closer to the safe zone with its back turned to him, he will then step out and hit the zombie hard in the head.
He repeated this tactic until the two remaining zombies fell to his bat as well.
Shen Tian checked the system panel to know how much time he has left for this quest. Fortunately, he still has 20 minutes left.
After looking left and right to see if there will be any more zombies jumping out at him, Shen Tian felt safe and courageously stepped out of the safe zone as well. Using the bat that only got a little bit of durability left in it, he smashed the three zombie's heads in until they turned to mush.
"Can you give me a pair of gloves or something so that I can pick the crystal cores off this pile of brain meat?!"
Seeing the mess in front of him, Shen Tian can't help but want to vomit.
[[ Notification: Please, host, check your pocket for the requested pair of gloves and a pack of wet wipes. ]]
Shen Tian's eyes hurriedly checked his pockets as instructed.
To his joy, he found a pair of surgical gloves in his pocket as well as a pack of wet wipes. Shen Tian wore the gloves first and then picked the crystal cores off the pile of mush in front of him.
As soon as he got the three crystal cores, he quickly stepped right back inside the safe zone.
"Since you gave me a pack of wet wipes without me asking, you probably want me to clean up the crystal cores first before depositing them into the terminal, right?"
Without waiting for the system's response, he squatted down and rolled the crystal cores on the dirt road. He then wiped the dirt off, but the dirt didn't completely clean the crystal cores. Of course, he already expected that so he took out the wet wipes and wiped the dirt off completely.
Once he was done, he leisurely stood up and walked to the pillar he saw earlier.
Shen Tian observed the pillar when he got close to it. He noticed that on top of the pillar is a small version of the system panel.
"System, where do I deposit the crystal cores?"
[[ Notification: Host, please deposit the crystal cores by putting them on top of the system panel. ]]
Hearing that, Shen Tian placed the three crystal cores on the system panel as instructed. The system panel glowed with white light. After a couple of seconds, it expanded outwards, slowly engulfing the entire green zone.
As the light was too bright, Shen Tian covered his eyes to protect himself from going blind. Once the light dissipated, the system voice rang in Shen Tian's head.
[[ Notification: Congratulations, host, for completing the quest. Please check your rewards. ]]
