"Who are they?" Vol asked. Somehow, from Penelope, he thought he might get an answer. He caught another blow on his shield, sending the man hurtling to the floor as he swept his legs out from underneath him. The enemies were streaming from the trees in seemingly endless amounts. The initial ten on his side had been replaced by what seemed to be as much as thirty. No matter how many he killed, there always seemed to be more.

"I don't know!" Penelope said back. "Puppets, I think, sent by someone horrible! Be careful Vol, you don't want to end up like these. Mother told me that those who work the Life Magics taint the souls of everyone that they touch – forever."

 Whatever 'Life Magics' meant, Vol didn't have any idea. Penelope said it as though it was the most obvious thing in the world. It seemed as obvious to her as making a fire was obvious to him. She didn't seem to at all understand that she'd said something strange… Or that she was doing anything strange.
