"Agent Coulson has fallen in action." Nick Fury announced the news.
The scene then switched to a room where Tony Stark and Captain America, Steve Rogers, sat silently, with Maria Hill standing by like a sentinel.
"This was found in Agent Coulson's jacket. He never had a chance to get your autograph," Nick Fury threw the card on the table in front of Captain America. The cards were all about Captain America and were Phil Coulson's collection, but now they were stained with blood.
"We're in the dark here. Communications are down, and we can't locate the Tesseract. Banner and Thor are both missing," Captain America picked up a bloody card and stared at it in silence, while Nick Fury's voice continued, "I'm powerless as well. I've lost one of my best agents, maybe it's my own fault."
"Thor is missing because Loki threw him off the mothership," Tony Stark spoke up when he saw this. "As for how Banner disappeared, the video didn't play, but based on the previous footage, we can infer that Loki used some kind of trickery."
"During the Battle of New York, Dr. Banner only arrived on a motorcycle halfway through," Phil Coulson said. "That should be the reason why he got separated, thanks to Loki's design."
"But from the subsequent course of the battle in New York, both Thor and Dr. Banner joined the fight," Clint Barton summarized. "It seems that Loki's tricks were only temporary, and in the end, they were in vain."
"That's right! We intended to use the Tesseract to create weapons!" In the video, Nick Fury straightforwardly admitted to using the Tesseract to create weapons. "But I didn't bet everything on that. Instead, I put my bet on a more risky project." Nick Fury walked around the chairs and stood beside Captain America and Iron Man. "Stark should know about my idea." Nick Fury slowly uttered a sentence, "We call it the 'Avengers Initiative'."
Tony Stark remained silent, while Captain America looked up at Nick Fury.
"The idea is to bring together the most exceptional individuals in the world and see if they can make a greater impact. When we need them the most, they can unite and fight against enemies that we cannot defeat. Coulson believed in this belief until the end, he believed in the existence of heroes."
The scene ended here.
Although the rest was not shown, everyone could imagine that it was Phil Coulson's "death" that ultimately made the members of the Avengers put aside their differences and truly unite to fight against the Chitauri and Loki.
"Coulson, I didn't realize you accomplished something so significant in the future," Clint Barton couldn't help but applaud.
"I'm sorry, I didn't intend to deceive everyone," Phil Coulson apologized. "But as you can see, the enemy is too powerful, and we need unity. I had to do what I did."
"It doesn't matter. You didn't deceive me anyway," Clint Barton said with an indifferent look.
"What do you have to be proud of?" Tony Stark struck back. "You were under Loki's control at that time, which was even worse than being deceived!"
"I eventually broke free," Clint Barton wasn't affected by the remark. "And I shot Loki with an arrow, bringing him down from the sky to the ground."
"Coulson, I never expected that beneath your honest and loyal facade, you had a dark side," Thor was also surprised by Phil Coulson's "hidden depths."
"Thor, everything is for victory," Phil Coulson said sincerely. "If you need it, I can apologize to you for the deception in the future, although I believe such deception will not happen again."
"Apologies can't just be words, they need to be backed by action," Thor said. "You owe me another meal at KFC!"
"Always eating high-calorie food," Clint Barton interjected. "Thor, you'll definitely become a couch potato in the future."
"No, there will never be such a day," Thor waved his hand dismissively.
"I don't care whether he becomes a couch potato or not, let's analyze the problem," Tony Stark said. "The key point revealed in this question is the timing of the Battle of New York."
"Correct," Phil Coulson followed Tony Stark's lead. "Director Fury mentioned in the video that 'last year, an alien visitor came to Earth.' This indicates that the Battle of New York happened in the second year after Thor arrived on Earth."
"And now this 'alien visitor' has come to Earth, standing right in front of us," Clint Barton said. "So, next year, Loki will come to Earth to seize the Tesseract and lead the Chitauri in an attack!"
"Next year?" Thor murmured. "What happened in the past year that would lead you to do such a thing, Loki?"
"Coulson, I want to confirm something. Does S.H.I.E.L.D. currently have the research on weapons of mass destruction using the cosmic cube as mentioned in the video?" Tony Stark fixed his gaze on Phil Coulson.
"No, Stark, we don't," Phil Coulson met Stark's gaze without flinching. "As you saw in the video, Director Fury's decision to use the cube for weapons development was a response to Thor's arrival. Thor has just arrived on Earth and hasn't even met Director Fury yet. Moreover, Director Fury is aware of the answer space, so it's even less likely that he would develop weapons like in the video."
"You better be telling the truth," Tony Stark cautioned. "And as you saw, Thor clearly stated that it was because of the research on the Tesseract that Loki was drawn here. For other planets, this would be interpreted as Earth preparing for an advanced war! So, under no circumstances should we conduct unauthorized research on the Tesseract."
"I will inform Director Fury," Phil Coulson acknowledged the seriousness of the situation.
"Additionally, this video reveals another fact," Clint Barton said. "That is, Loki had been to Earth before the Battle of New York."
"Yes, it was during that time that he brought the Destroyer to Earth," Phil Coulson looked at Thor. "Thor, do you know why Loki came to Earth?"
"Just as I don't know why he would lead the Chitauri in attacking Earth," Thor said. "I have absolutely no idea why he came to Earth before."
"I'm afraid his decision to lead the Chitauri in attacking Earth is related to his first visit to Earth..." Tony Stark pondered. "If we can figure that out, perhaps we can prevent the Battle of New York."
