Capítulo 23: Chapter 23: You Still Owe Me a Dance

Pepper Potts was stunned. She couldn't believe that these words were coming out of Tony Stark's mouth.

Oh my god, is this still the same arrogant playboy who indulges himself everywhere?

When did he become so enlightened?

"Tony, if Captain America were still alive, you would definitely be his confidant." Pepper Potts gazed at Tony Stark with a hint of infatuation. Although the Tony Stark in front of her was acting a bit unusual, she had to admit that this version of Tony Stark was truly captivating.

"That WWII veteran?" Tony Stark chewed on his sandwich and said, "I don't think he would like me, I mean, find me agreeable."

"Don't say that. Captain America is undoubtedly a true superhero, deserving of the admiration of all of us." Pepper Potts watched Tony Stark eat hurriedly and handed him a glass of juice. "But you, you're also a superhero. You've saved many families. In my eyes, the only difference between you and Steve Rogers is that he lives in everyone's hearts, while you, you're truly alive."

"Pepper, don't say that. Oh, I mean, don't say the part about Captain's death. I really love hearing the part about me being a superhero. You can continue, say it another three thousand times." Tony Stark took the juice and gulped down two large sips. "I mean, Captain may not only exist in everyone's hearts. Maybe he's still alive in this world."

"Come on, Tony, you were serious for five minutes, and now you're back to teasing, teasing Captain America." Pepper Potts rolled her eyes. "He is the first superhero in history. In a way, he's your predecessor, and you should show him appropriate respect."

"Pepper, let me tell you a secret, don't tell anyone else." Tony Stark beckoned to Pepper Potts.

"Is it a real secret?" Pepper Potts looked skeptical.

"A real secret, I haven't told anyone."

"Well, I'm all ears." Pepper Potts leaned closer, bringing her ear to Tony Stark's mouth.

"This secret is..." Tony Stark stretched out his voice, building up the suspense. "I'm more handsome than that old soldier."

"Tony!" Pepper Potts scolded Tony Stark with a reproachful look.

"Okay, okay, I'll tell you the real secret." Successfully tricking Pepper Potts, Tony Stark was in a great mood. "Captain America, Steve Rogers, he might still be alive."

"You're lying to me again!" Pepper Potts snatched away the sandwich that Tony Stark was halfway through eating. "Alright, I'm leaving now, I'm still very busy."

"It's true." Tony Stark leaned forward and snatched the sandwich from Pepper Potts' mouth. "Someone is putting in a lot of effort to find him."

"Captain has been gone for nearly 70 years, hasn't he?" Pepper Potts still couldn't believe it. "There are no gods in this world, how can someone who died 70 years ago come back to life?"

"Speaking of gods, let me tell you a second secret, there are gods in this world." Tony Stark said, "And they will come to Earth."

"Come on!" Pepper Potts shrugged, feeling that Tony Stark was getting more and more outlandish.

"There are no gods in this world, how can someone who died 70 years ago come back to life?" As Pepper Potts uttered these words, in a nursing home in New York, an old man with white hair and wrinkled face also said the same thing.

"It's not resurrection, but never having died in the first place." Maria Hill sat beside Peggy Carter, peeling an orange for her. "Back then, Captain jumped into the sea to prevent the bomb from exploding in New York. But all these years, we never found his body. Carter, have you ever wondered why?"

"Because he didn't die, so there's no body?" Peggy Carter's gaze fixed on the ceiling as the sound of car engines roared in her ears, and a young, handsome face appeared before her.

He wore the stars and stripes, held a shield, and sat in the co-pilot seat. Colonel Phillips was driving, while she sat behind him.

Colonel Phillips drove the car at breakneck speed, as if treating it like an airplane.

But they still couldn't catch up with the person fleeing ahead, because he was really flying a plane.

"Hold steady!" Captain America stood up, holding his shield.

"Hold on!" Peggy Carter abandoned all the coyness of a young girl and wrapped her arms around Captain's neck, sharing a deep kiss.

"Go and kill him!" she said to him.

"I won't kiss you!" amidst Colonel Phillips' humorless joke, he boarded the plane.

And then, he never came back.

It was she who had sent him down a path of no return.

Looking back on it, she regretted it countless times, shedding endless tears. If that day she hadn't encouraged him to get on the plane but instead tried to keep him, would he have survived?

But she knew that whether she had held him back or not, it would have been in vain. He would ultimately have boarded that plane, even if he knew he could never return.

That was him!

A true hero!

Steve Rogers!

Everyone knows Captain America as the first superhero in American history, but Peggy Carter disliked that label. She preferred to call him a "hero" rather than a "superhero."

Steve Rogers' greatness had nothing to do with being a super soldier; it was about his spirit, his charisma.

Steve Rogers became a hero not because he was a super soldier but because of who he was. Even if he hadn't received the serum, even if he was still that skinny kid, when faced with choices, he would still make the greatest one!

"Give me the coordinates, and I'll find you a safe landing spot."

"There may not be time to worry about safety. I have to attempt a crash landing."

"I'll have Howard listen in; he knows what to do."

"There's no time. This plane is too fast and headed straight for New York. I have to make it crash into the sea."

"Please, don't do this. There's still time; we can figure something out."

"If I don't act immediately, many lives will be lost. Peggy, it looks like we'll have to postpone our dance."

"Next Saturday at the Stork Club."

That was their final conversation, and even after seventy years, she still remembered every word, not forgetting a single one.

The sound of the plane's propellers, the sound of the plane plunging into the sea, the sound of the raging waves echoed in her ears every night.

Peggy Carter's eyes moistened, and two silent tears rolled down her cheeks.

"Steve, you still owe me a dance..."
