Marcus pushed the thoughts regarding his family to the side for now as they were not important at the moment.
He was steadily becoming more and more proficient at suppressing his emotions as time went on. The combination of him being tortured in the past, being hunted down by his fellow humans for fun, and his meditation training had helped Marcus become more level headed and as a result provided excellent training in controlling ones thoughts and emotions.
Whether or not Nekros had intentionally put Marcus through this was unknown to him, but the results spoke for themselves. He was now unconsciously making sound decisions in almost any circumstance and able to get a hold of his more prevalent emotions that he'd been experiencing in the past few days, like anger, hate, resentment, and so on.
After all, being ostracized and hunted didn't lead to very positive feelings towards the other party. If Marcus had the ability to fight back against his pursuers, who knows what he would have done by now. Maybe not allowing Marcus the ability to perform mage arts before he had his emotions under control was also intentional on his master's part.
"Now that we've discussed what it is I'll be teaching you, you'll now need to understand the difficulties of wielding darkness as an element. Unlike shadows, which can be found all across the world no matter where you are, true darkness is not as abundant.
"Take the shadows that are currently located behind various objects near that flame as an example."
Marcus opened his eyes to observe the shadows at various locations around the campfire.
He noticed shadows behind the stone he'd been using as a chair to meditate on, there were also shadows that stretched behind several trees nearby, and there were even shadows extending from small twigs and rocks that lie on the ground around him.
"These shadows are only a type of darkness that occur when something impedes a light source, which in this case are the flames," Nekros stated as Marcus focused his attention on the fire.
"Shadows are reliant upon light so that they can manifest into the world, and as a consequence they are not independent of said light.
"Shadows also cower and are forced to run away from light, but darkness does not. Darkness is lights equal and as a result has no reason to withdraw in the face of light."
Marcus's eyes never stopped observing the flame and shadows that surrounded it as his master spoke. He was trying to make sure he understood what it was his master was speaking of.
It seemed he'd gotten a general understanding through observing his surrounding though. Like his master said, the shadows all around Marcus immediately vanished when he removed the rock or twig that impeded the light from the flame. It seemed shadows were no match against the light but then that left him wondering if his elemental affinity towards darkness would have the same reaction in the same scenario.
"If you've understood everything up to this point, then I will explain how you manifest darkness in your surroundings. As you already know, any mage can shout out an incantation and a spell will immediately manifest as I'm sure you've seen before."
"Yes, I recall my father casting a spell that caused a scythe to manifest out of thin air and my mother had cast a spell that had hidden my sister from those that attacked us," Marcus spoke in a dangerously cold tone as he remembered that fateful day.
He exhaled a breath to calm himself down and changed back to the same neutral expression he had before.
"There was also the case of when Beatrice had manifested water tentacles both from the ground and on the side of buildings as we were running away."
"Good, then you already have points of references to draw from. With that being said-"
"Hold on master. I don't understand something. If what you said earlier about shadows vanishing in the presence of light, then wouldn't that mean my father's scythe would fail to manifest in the daylight and that Beatrice shouldn't be able to manifest water in an area that lacks well, water?"
"That's a valid question but there's a small detail that you are unaware of.
"Unlike elements that are created from casting a spell, natural elements throughout terra are formed as a result of nature's various cycles. Rainwater entering a pond, or even the very earth you walk on are all natural elements within Terra and act in accordance with Terra's natural laws.
"However, if said elements manifest through a spell or some other form where mana influences it, then those elements will exist outside of Terra's laws.
"This essentially means that elements created with mana are not bound by the natural laws of the world and can defy logic like your father's shadow scythe or Beatrice manifesting water in a place that has none.
"Does that answer your question boy?"
"Yes, I think I understand," Marcus said hesitantly.
He had a vague understanding of what his master had said, and it would take time before he truly comprehend what it was he was being taught.
Marcus wasn't someone who instantly understood something that was taught to him and was actually on the slower side, but in exchange he'd almost never forget something he learned once before.
"Good, in that case take out the item I instructed you to purchase earlier.
Marcus did as he was instructed and pulled out the item from his sack that was lying on the ground beside him.
The item he retrieved from his bag was a red linen blindfold. As he pulled it out he could already assume what his master wanted him to do with it so he tied it around his head and covered his eyes.
"Now what?"
"Now it begins."
Almost immediately after his master said those words Marcus heard the sounds of several voices and footsteps in the distance.
"Umm.. master what exactly am I supposed to be doing here."
For a while Nekros did not answer Marcus and the voices and footsteps only grew closer with every passing second. Eventually it got to a point where Marcus was about to remove his blindfold but was immediately stopped after hearing his master's voice.
"This will be your first trial boy. Do not attempt to move the blindfold. If you do so, then you shouldn't even concern yourself with learning my mage arts because you won't be worthy of them."
To this Marcus immediately removed his hand from the blindfold and grew anxious because the voices were so close he started to make out what it was they were saying.
"...You sure it's out here... I... see nothin."
"Yea... out here alright..."
"....You better be sure cuz I aint come all this way for nothin. That omen's head's worth 10 gold coins now! Do ya know what I could do with 10 whole gold coins?"
"Knowing you, you'll probably go waste it all in some brothel or bar instead of fixing up that f*cked up leg a yers."
"F*ck you! My legs just fine, just need a few more days of rest and should be okay, I think."
"Whatever, do whatever ya want with yer half of the money, just don't come crying to me later once you run out."
As the voices drew closer and closer to Marcus he forcefully stopped himself from panicking by exhaling a deep breath.
Marcus's eyes couldn't be seen due to the blindfold but a icy expression was plastered across his face now as he prepared for the beginning of a long night.
