Capítulo 2: Awakening

Joe wakes up in a small hospital room, he sits up and notices a bandage that is wrapped around his chest. Stripping it off, Joe saw his normal scars that he has had for years, but he also saw a new one. A scar from buckshot, spread across his chest, it was very noticeable.

Pulling out the IV in his arm, Joe decides to look around the room for the first time. He saw another bed with a man sleeping there. Recognizing the man faintly, Joe gets out of bed and walks to the door at the side of the room and walks inside. Turning on the faucet, Joe drinks some water from the tap before shutting it off.

Joe suddenly hears a body hit the floor, making a loud thudding noise. This was followed by a raspy voice calling out, "Nurse! Nurse!" Joe walks out of the bathroom and looks at the man who is sprawled out on the floor. Joe walks over to the man and lends the man a hand. Joe then helps the man stand up and sits him on the bed.

The man asked, "Who are you? Where is the nurse?"

Joe replied, "I'm Joseph Black, but you can call me Joe. Also, I just woke up, I don't know where the nurse is. What's your name?"

The man looks at the dried flowers on the side table in confusion, saying, "I'm Rick, Rick Grimes..." He pauses for a second before he asks, "DO you know how to take this off?" He points at the IV in his arm.

Joe nods and helps Rick pull out the IV. Rick Said gratefully, "Thank you." Rick then stands up shakily, and walks to the bathroom, drinking from the same tap as Joe, but after a couple sips the water stops coming out. Weirded out by this Rick walks out of the bathroom and finds himself alone.

He walks out of the hospital room and looks at the gurney that had been pushed out of the way. He starts walking down the empty hall that had random gurneys and paper garbage scattered around. The light down the hall was flickering on and off. Rick nearly falls on his ass as he watches someone start to walk towards him from down the hall, moaning and groaning.

Right as the weird creature that looked like a human corpse was about to grab him, Joe came from behind Rick and kicked the creature away. As it tried to get up from the floor Joe dug a pair of scissors into the creature's eye and through to its brain, killing it.

Joe looked very different from a couple minutes ago, his hospital gown was bloodied, almost fully red at this point. Rick stumbles away from Joe before accusing, "You killed that person!" Joe turns around and looks at the confused man with a confused gaze.

Joe asked, "Keep your voice down. Does this look like a man to you?"

Rick questions, "What do you mean?"

Joe responds, "Look at this thing. It is rotten and it was shambling closer to you."

Rick asks, "And?"

Joe states, "When I first left the room there was one of those things and it literally tried to bite me and this one was probably trying to do the same to you. I don't know about you, but I'd rather not get bit."

Rick nods, but then says, "But what if..." Joe interrupts him as he saw another one of those things walking over.

Joe says, "Watch this." Joe then walked toward the creature after retrieving his only weapon, the pair of scissors, from the eye socket of the thing on the ground. John get within grabbing distance and allows the creature to grab him and as it tried to bite him, he stabs it right in the head. The pair of scissors breaking after passing through the hard skull.

Joe looks at Rick and watches him come to the realization that these things are not human. Joe walks to him and lends his hand. Rick grabs it after hesitating for less than a second. Rick says, "Thanks for saving me. What should we do now?"

Joe thinks for a second before he responds, "Let's look around and find some supplies before we leave the hospital."

Rick nods and says, "Sounds like a plan." With the talk out of the way, they start to walk down the hall, walking cautiously around all the gurneys and chairs that were strown about. They walk around a corner and find a female creature slumped over the desk of the floor receptionist. Joe and Rick walk towards it and started to search the desk for supplies, as Joe put his hand closer to the creatures mouth it suddenly moved as it tried to bite him, Rick quickly grabber a stapler and bashes it against the creatures' head.

Rick continued until the creature stopped moving, Joe nodded at Rick and said, "I guess we're even."

Rick asks, "Wait, are we keeping count?" Joe sighs and responds, "Obviously not." Rick nods and they do back to searching the desk, finding some tape, matches, and a couple of hard metal cased pens. The pens should be good for one skull, so they are a good weapon for now. They had 4 pens, so they each took 2.

Having found everything, they thought was useful at the desk, they walked over to a set of double doors with reinforced windows. They looked through and saw a single creature shambling about on the other side some ways down the hall. There was a good 20 feet of intestines that was trailing behind the thing as it walked.

Rick whispered, "Definitely not human." Joe nodded and started to open the door, but Rick stopped him, "Why take the risk?"

Joe responded, "I'm tired of walking around with my ass hanging out. I want some clothes." Joe started to open the door but stopped when Rick said, "My house isn't far from this hospital, if were at the hospital I think we're at." Joe nodded and then closed the door before walking over to a chair and using it to bar the door.

Rick said, "Let's go, the elevator is this way."

Joe asks, "You think the elevator works?" Pointing at the flickering lights, Rick shaking his head.

Rick stating, "We'll take the stairs." Nodding Joe and Rick walk down the hall opposite the barred door and dodge any hanging wires, neither knowing if they had voltage flowing through them but neither wanted to find out either.

As they get further down the hall, they start to see blood on the walls. Tightening their grip on the pens, they continue forward at a slower speed, silencing their steps. Walking through a broken door, they come upon a set of double doors, the sign above the door said, "Cafeteria", however on the door, there was a message written in blood, "DON"T OPEN DEAD INSIDE!"

Joe says, "Let's not open that door."

Rick drawls, "Yeah." Their voices caused whatever was on the other side to start pushing against the doors. Some rotten fingers poking through the crack in the door. Rick stumbles back a little before walking toward the exit sign down the hall to the left. Joe following closely, as Rick was walking past a room, a hand reaches out to grab him. Joe saw this and stabbed one of his pens through the ear of the creature.

Getting under the exit sign with no more incidents, they open the door to the stairs. Rick lit a match before they started making their way down the stairs. They made it to the ground floor luckily before the last match fizzled out. They opened the door to the outside world slowly, unsure of what was on the other side. They also didn't want to get blinded by the sudden change in brightness.

Once fully acclimated to the light outside they opened the door all the way. Joe and Rick were immediately assaulted by a horrendous smell and the buzzing of bugs. They looked out and saw row upon rows of corpses lined up. Walking down the stairs to the ground, Rick stared blankly at the bodies, while Joe leisurely strolled next to him.

Getting away from the bodies they walk under a brick entrance that had a sign hanging down loosely. They walked up a small hill and came upon a small makeshift military base. There was a broken helicopter and multiple broken Humvees. It was obviously abandoned, Rick wanted to hurry home to check on his family, but Joe convinces him to search the camp and find some better weapons.

And while they were unable to find any firearms, they were able to find a couple military grade knives and backpacks. With that out of the way, Joe follows Rick down the road as they make their way to his house. Along the way they encountered a couple corpses, but they made quick work of them with their new knives. Arriving at a bike Rick get on as he was walking significantly slower than Joe. The main reason being he was still healing from his gun shot.

As they continued forward, they talked a little more about themselves. Joe talked about his time in the military, leaving out his time as an underground fighter, gang murderer, and mechanic. Rick talked about his job as the Sherriff and his family. The mood soured some when Rick talked about his family, but at that point they were standing in front of Rick house.

Unable to hold himself back Rick ran in through the front door. Yelling his wife's name in a hysterical fashion, "Lori!" Joe watched as the man walked through the house while shouting the name of his wife and child. Joe started to walk through the house and was observing things, everything seemed to be in place except some picture frames were gone, and there was some close laying in different random places. It was obvious that his wife and child left the house, and this wasn't some kind of B&E.

Eventually the man broke into tears while kneeling on the floor, Joe walked over and smacked him in the back of the head. Joe said, "Get a grip, man! I don't think some random robber is going to steal you picture frames. Also, have you seen those walking corpses? Do you think your family is just going to stay at home? No, they probably went to some military camp or something."

Rick coming to find this explanation logical gets a grip of himself. He stands up and walks outside to get some fresh air. Or he thought so, but as soon as he stepped outside, he got smacked in the face by a big ass shovel. Followed by a young voice, "Daddy! Daddy!"

Rick was knocked to the floor and barely conscious as he hallucinated his son standing above him. Rick whispers, "Carl. You're here." Joe walked out the door and said, "What are you doing, Boy?" The teenager spun around and looked at the somewhat intimidating man walking towards him. Somewhat only because he was still wearing a hospital gown, albeit bloodied.

A black man rushes from the side of the neighbor's house, shooting a walker in the road. He then makes his way to his son, seeing a figure in the door frame he shoots at it. Joe ducking, barely dodging the bullet that came speeding towards him. Joe cussing, "The fuck is wrong with you! Damn!"

The black man stumbles a little at the cussing as his son come running to his side. Joe walked out of the house and knelt beside Rick. His nose was bleeding, and his head was already swelling. Joe says, "You sure love getting hurt, huh Rick?" Rick was unable to refute, passing out.

Joe looked at the black man and asked, "So... Joseph Black, and you are?"

The black man hesitated for a second but replied, "Morgan and this is my boy, Dwayne."

Joe nodded, "So, Morgan. My friend, Rick and I have just woken up in the hospital and have very little knowledge of what is going on. Can you give us a general explanation?"

Morgan paused for a moment, looking at Dwayne. Dwayne nodding his head slightly with a compassionate look in his eyes. Morgan says. "Alright, but I think you're a threat to my boy, I will put you down."

Joe nods and smiles, "I don't suppose we could talk inside; those creatures tend to sneak up on you."

Morgan nodded, but questioned, "Creatures? They're walkers, least that's what we call them."

Joe repeated, "Walkers, I like that better." Joe crouched down and slung Rick over his shoulder before he followed Morgan to a house down the block.

Joe was thankful to himself that he chose enhanced stamina, it didn't help him strength wise, but he could use his maximum strength for a long time now thanks to the stamina, he honestly felt like he could run a 10-mile race while carrying Rick and still have plenty of energy. Joe felt that if he had a good enough weapon and some good armor, he would be able to fight a hoard of walkers by himself.
