Capítulo 38: We Accidentally Killed an Athlete

Old man Lyndon Schneider and the big man Dix are now fugitives, and Josh could not possibly take them to his own home.

That would be irresponsible to Margaret and to himself.

So he took them to his parent's old apartment.

Though he had been thinking of selling it, he had not been able to sell it.

By taking the two men there, even if they were caught and implicated him, he had enough reason to deny any association with them.

For example, Lyndon Schneider was only acquainted with his father, knew the address, and had the key, so he went there alone. Josh had nothing to do with it.

As long as Josh could stick to this point, even if the two men tried to implicate him, the police and the court would have no way to convict him.

Moreover, the likelihood of the two men implicating him is low if they have any sense.

Despite stealing a large amount of jewelry, according to the newspaper reports from this morning, the entire burglary process did not result in any casualties other than one security guard who suffered minor injuries.

And as long as there was no murder, even if the two were caught, according to the law at this time, it would not be considered a serious crime.

Especially since both of them were white.

At most, they would be sentenced to a few years in prison.

If they made good relations with Josh, they might even be able to get out early with his help.

So what was the point of implicating him?

When they arrived, Josh approached the building manager and pretended to inquire about the sale of apartments. At the same time, Lyndon Schneider and Dix took the opportunity to avoid the manager's sight and enter the building.

Then Josh went upstairs and opened the door for them.

Fortunately, they did not encounter anyone during the whole process.

"I asked the building manager, and the police only searched this area this morning. You are safe here for a short time," Josh said to the two men after closing the door.

"Thank you very much, kid!" Lyndon Schneider again gave a stiff bow to Josh.

"Don't thank me yet; what is your situation? According to the newspaper, there should be more than two of you. The gunfire in the Lakeshore district earlier should also have been your people, right? And what is your relationship with my father?" Josh asked, shaking his head.

Lyndon Schneider and Dix exchanged glances, did not hesitate much, and told the whole story.

It turned out that the robbery was related to the lawyer Emery, as Josh had suspected. And Lyndon Schneider was also one of the masterminds.

Of course, there was a lot more to the story.

It all started a month ago when Lyndon Schneider had just been released from prison.

That's right, this wanted professional criminal by the police had just come out of jail.

And his first order of business after getting out of jail was to come to Chicago and find a local underground broker named Cobby, stating that he had a big deal and needed some manpower and a buyer.

The deal was to steal the Leibler family's jewelry store's safe.

Because Lyndon Schneider was known on the streets for his high IQ and credibility, Cobby, the broker, warmly welcomed him and introduced him to one of his big clients.

And this big client was the lawyer Emery.

Not only did Emery offer financial support for Lyndon Schneider's operation, but he also offered to buy the jewelry at a price higher than the black market rate after the fact.

With Cobby's guarantee and Emery's reputation in Chicago, Lyndon Schneider was tempted by the high price offered by Emery and agreed to the deal.

He quickly recruited personnel and launched the operation.

The recruits were Dix and his other three companions, Louis, Goss, and Cody.

The entire theft process went very smoothly at first.

However, after the theft was completed, there was a bit of an accident.

As they were leaving, a security guard happened to appear on the road they were retreating on.

Although Dix successfully knocked out the security guard, unfortunately, the guard's gun fell on the ground and went off.

Then, one of their gang members, a man named Louis, was shot.

To avoid being caught together, they had to disperse and act separately.

Goss took Louis back home to find a black doctor.

Meanwhile, Lyndon Schneider, Dix, and Cody went to find Emery to complete the transaction with money and goods. That's also why Emery left in a hurry after John Leibler left last night.

They were there to receive the goods.

However, Lyndon and the others didn't expect that Emery had no intention of paying from the beginning and planned to double-cross them.

This was because Emery's financial situation was very bad in recent years, on the verge of bankruptcy, and he couldn't possibly come up with the money to purchase the jewelry.

So he planned to flee to Mexico with the jewels, and he had a partner, a hitman named Bob Brando.

However, they picked the wrong opponents.

Lyndon Schneider was a non-violent criminal who relied on his brains to make a living.

Dix and Cody were not.

As a result, Emery's double-cross failed, and Bob Brando, his most trusted hitman, ended up dead by Dix's gun.

However, just as Dix and Cody were about to kill Emery, Lyndon Schneider stopped them.

Because their situation was very bad, they lost their buyer, couldn't get the money, had nowhere to run, and it wasn't easy to sell such a large quantity of jewels.

So Lyndon Schneider came up with an idea to have Emery contact the insurance company.

As long as the price wasn't too high when such a situation arises, the insurance company is willing to privately buy back these gems to compensate for the losses to the Leibler family.

Emery agreed and disposed of his own partner's body.

Originally, this matter would have ended like that.

However, what was unexpected was that the police had been closely watching Lyndon Schneider, this renowned pro-criminal, since his release from prison. In addition to pressure from the Leibler family and the city hall, despite no direct evidence proving that Lyndon Schneider was responsible for the theft, the police still issued a warrant and targeted Lyndon Schneider as the suspect.

Then they found themselves in an awkward situation. Shortly after leaving the Emery villa, they were spotted by the police.

During this process, their companion Cody bravely led the police astray, allowing Lyndon Schneider and Dix to escape and run into Josh, who was on his way home.

As Lyndon Schneider recounted the story, he again emphasized that he had a very good relationship with Josh's father.

Even the reason why Josh's family could come to the United States was because of his help.

As for this claim, Josh neither confirmed nor denied it; there was no way to prove it.

But since the other party could list his father's details and even gave him a large bag of diamonds, it was evident they had some kind of relationship.

Therefore, it wouldn't hurt to help a little if he had the ability.

Moreover, this matter did indeed have a lot of room for maneuvering.

"If you believe me, you might as well turn yourself in now." After thinking for a while, Josh said to Lyndon Schneider.

"Why?" Lyndon Schneider was very puzzled.

"Because, according to what you said, Emery played an important role in this matter. If that's the case, you can all agree on the same story and pin all the blame on him. Besides, I know Mr. John Leibler personally. If he finds out that his legal advisor is playing tricks, I believe he won't hesitate to help you nail the traitor Emery. Then you will only be accomplices and even have the mitigating factor of turning yourself in. You won't get a heavy sentence if I hire a good lawyer for you. I can even arrange for you to get medical parole or something. Isn't that better than being on the run like you are now?" Josh said, "In this process, you haven't caused any major injuries besides killing Emery's hitman in self-defense."

Upon hearing Josh's words, Lyndon Schneider fell silent.

Yes, Josh's proposal was actually quite reasonable.

It's just that he couldn't help but tighten his grip on the bag of jewels, still feeling a bit reluctant.

"Sir, I'm afraid things are not that simple. In this case, we didn't cause too much damage, but I don't want to hide it from you. Just half a month ago, a few of us brothers accidentally killed a tennis player. We have several other cases on our records. This is not something that can be easily resolved by just surrendering," said Dix, who was standing next to Lyndon Schneider just as he was starting to consider surrendering.

Upon hearing his words, Josh suddenly choked on his breath and began coughing loudly.
