Madelyn couldn't believe what she was seeing and rubbed her eyes hard. There was no denying it – the worker standing in front of her was the same man who had dropped the metal bucket from the scaffolding days earlier. Gregg had secretly paid him off to do that so that she would rescue Louis, winning his heart in the process.
Now, the worker had popped up out of nowhere. The only thought in Madelyn's head was: Busted! Even with the lovely warmth of late April, she felt like she'd been plunged into an icy chamber, shivering from head to toe. How she longed to jump at the worker and strangle him, silencing him forever.
Regret washed over her for being too cocky and careless. She should've been more vigilant and ready, but she'd missed her shot.
Louis shot Madelyn a frosty look and said, "Miss Monroe, don't you have anything to say?"
Madelyn sat there, speechless, as if turning to stone, unable to find her voice.
