It took a moment for eve to realise if it she was knocked out, or it was the darkness which prohibited her eyes from seeing anything. The pitch darkness suffocated her, the hand was covering her mouth like a heavy lid.
"My lady please calm down, you are safe now...Your grace please calm down...I will let go off this if you promise not to scream." The man spoke immediately before Eve could scream or protest. He spoke earnestly so that Eve doesn't act recklessly. Slowly his words seeped into her realisation.
Eve nodded in agreement, after getting a grasp of herself, she knew it would only bring her death if she screamed.
A candle was lit in the dark room, and the owner of the voice appeared in front of her.
"Mr.Beloiz" Her voice was almost inaudible, the fear was gripping her body and mind.
Offering her a glass of water he made her sit on a chair. As eve looked around it looked like a small workstation, 'Where was this place? Why am I here?'
"I know you must be startled Your grace, but this was the only way I had. It was dangerous. I was in the garden, but then I saw you coming in. I should have told you not to visit today."
"Mr.Langton. I mean Did you know all of these?I... I... Should tell the Duke. All this, all of this is insane."
She stood up to leave, surprise and anger, made her words incongruent, but cognizable enough.
"Wait Your grace...Miss Betrice..." He hindered her path.
Panic struck her momentarily, but Eve didn't want to be overwhelmed by fear now, it wasn't to the time to be scared.
"What? Are you going to hold me as a hostage? You are with them?" Her sharp eyes penetrated straight into him
He shook his head and lowered his gaze, "You got me wrong my lady. But it's for your safety I am asking you not to leave right away. And I would request you to hear me out."
"Why should I trust you?" She snapped.
"You don't have to trust me. But I am really not one of them. Why would they the pure blooded old nobles take me a mere baron from an unknown background.I am just an employee of this palace library, if I don't obey their orders I would be crushed, worst exterminated."
Eve couldn't understand a word, all this doesn't make sense why was this pure blood so important? The empire had fell years back.
"Every month professor Langton hold a secret meeting, at this place. I simply have to leave the library vacant at that time, that's my job. Even today I did that. I won't lie to you, even I was curious, but when I realised, they are upto something grave I decided not to be nosy." He stopped momentarily, but Eve still looked clueless.
"You seem to understand the empire's language. I won't ask you how. If someone like me can pick it up, your family's rank is much higher up in the strata. Please don't let them know about it that I know this language.
It would be hard for me to explain what all this is about, because I don't know much. But their activities have become frequent once your engagement was announced with the Head of Faunoa. However what I know is they are plotting something against you, and it's also dangerous for the Duke. In fact if they become successful everyone is in danger including the Head of Magnolia and Miss Palwalker. However, before you act, you need to know their modus operandi. For that you need to read the manuscripts at the second floor. I can help you, but you have to find the link, because even though I have done sone research out of sheer curiousity, I couldn't find any link. History is like a treacherous river Miss Betrice the undercurrents can drag you to abyss."
Evelyn needed time to think and process all that she has heard, she needed to speak with Anastasio about everything. However, getting out of this place was urgent. She had to help Susan without letting Manila know anything. Susan is their target now. Manila wouldn't harm her right away they were playing a slow game.
"Why are you helping me Mr.Beloiz?"
She enquired bluntly.
"Because it's unfair" Came his prompt response.
"This entire system is a rotten corpse and it's so stagnant that it stinks. Infact, someone like you should never have agreed to this marriage. You should have lived a silent and happy life with your family. The Betrice have always been the scapegoat. However, I still see a silver lining, because Anastasio de Faunoa is different, he despises this system." The man was again rambling just like he did at the ball.
"This system should end, where a man sells his wife for an estate. A father has to call his own child someone else's because power matters. A simple man is victimised and killed just because, he knows the truth about their historical deprivation and wants to reveal it to the world, and get back what is rightfully his..."
He shot a gaze with horrified eyes at Evelyn breaking away from his almost trance like situation.
"I don't understand most of what you speak. As far as I get it, you like Anastasio because you think he doesn't believe this system and would bring and end to it?"
Nixon shook his head vehemently.
"I don't like him. In fact I abhor his existence. But, I don't want to harm him, nor do I wish any danger to befall on him. He is a victim too. Nobody would believe if I say. But they would all believe if you say the truth because he is with you. The dark secrets of the Magnolia empire that took precious lives, and scarred the lives of those who survived for generations to come. Those truths. You Miss Betrice is the most pathetic victim."
This man must be a loon, he definitely made no sense to Eve, "Mr Beloiz I must take your leave. I thank you for saving me today. I definitely owe this to you."
As if remembering something she hurriedly opened a drawer, and took out a thick package wrapped in a brown wrapper, the ones used to preserve documents. It looked old but well maintained.
"I know you must take me for a nut job, because my words make no sense to you now. But read this I plead you. I think you will understand a little bit. Then if you feel you can comeback here. I will assist you in my very little capacity. Please don't tell anything to the Duke about this right now, before you know everything. I am sure he too is upto something, your paths will align. Don't act before knowing the entire truth. Don't let those wolves take advantage of your ignorance." He held Eve's hands and implored.
She nodded in a hurry taking the package not hearing most of what this man said. Leaving the dark room she escaped from the library, running her way back to the palace, it was almost time for the evening schedule, the day was coming to an end. Her body was shivering and her legs were giving in but Eve didn't stop until she reached the Emarald palace.
