Capítulo 2: Sio: The Heir Apparent Faunoa

You must learn to bear the weight of the crown you wear.

______________

"I need results, not excuses, Manager Welmont." The board room fell silent once again, "I don't think this is an obituary meeting that you need to be silent, or have you all have got your mouths stitched up."

A soft, deep, yet stern voice filled in through the audio system of the long meeting room. The godly handsome man who was sitting at the farthest end of the table was none other than Anastasio Faunoa, the heir and the youngest CEO of Faunoa Corporations. He was a demon with the face of an angel. Undoubtedly his ancestors were royalty from whom his good looks hail. His face defied the most perfect sculptures, his raven black hair, which was slightly tousled now, gave the perfect bad boy impression. He had rare Nubian nose, brooding black eyes, which were cold and sharp. His perfectly built tall, muscular physique was the envy of every man and the dream of every woman. Anastasio was a sheer distraction, but his appearance although a treat to every human eye only was a reminder that all dangerous things are usually beautiful.

The employees at the Faunoa Corporations had already heard that their new CEO was like a tyrant ruler from the 13th century. Anastasio Faunoa was nothing like his grandfather who was known for his good, kind nature and a calm demeanor. Anastasio was cold and lethal, he could stab people with words, he was called the "Tyrant Trader" in the business world; he worked day in and day out to rise at the pinnacle. Above all, he meant business, and he couldn't stand people who would back off from their commitments.

"Does he even take time to breathe?" One of the female employees, said while puffing out her cigarette at the smoking zone of the gigantic lobby.

"Such a waste of that perfect face and godly physique, I pity his girlfriend."

"Do you think he has one?" there was a sarcastic laughter, "It's been more than six months he became our CEO, he is just 23, I have never seen him have a single date even during parties. Girls at the company are scared of him. Even his secretary is a man."

"Perhaps he is into men" the other girl proposed.

"Nope. I have checked on that too. You know I am into handsome men."

"He should seriously get a life." Both said it together and laughed at the same time.

Pressing the butt of the cigarette one of them said, "Thanks to the chairwoman's sudden visit today, that the meeting ended early. Otherwise that monster would have grilled us for another hour or so and then perhaps would have had our brains for dinner."

The old graceful woman, who looked like winter moon was waiting inside the large cabin, the interior was neatly done and exuded classy sophistication, her eyes gleamed with genuine affection the moment the door opened, "Sio, my baby" she went ahead and wrapped him in her warm embrace.

"Granda" although just for a moment, there was a hint of warmth in the cold eyes, Anastasio reciprocated the warmth of his grandmother, Irene Faunoa the only woman whom he loved the most in this entire world, "Why did you take the trouble? You could have just sent a word with someone."

Irene retorted mimicking his tone, "I had to take the trouble because I missed you Sio, and our Mr.CEO is too busy to make time for his old woman."

Crossing his arms, Anastasio sat across his grandmother; it wasn’t that easy to hoodwink him with sweet words, he was aware why she was here, and this was what he had been trying to dodge.

Irene was quick to catch that there was no need for a pretext anymore, "You know why I am here Sio." The old woman seemed to be a bit uneasy; however she concealed it well behind a bright smile.

Mrs. Faunoa was surprised how the little boy whom she had raised in her own arms, her own grandson, intimidated her with his cold personality. Oh! how he used to be a sweet and warm, as a child. Irene shook her head, no; she can't let him intimidate her,

"Don't give me that look Sio, I am not your employee, I am your grandmother. Remember?"

Anastasio smiled.

Mrs. Faunoa glanced at the young man who entered the chamber and right now was smiling brightly beside Anastasio waving at her; he was none other than, Edmon Decker, Anastasio's secretary and his only friend since childhood, “Hello Mrs. Faunoa. Have you been well? It’s been long.” He lied, in fact he had spoken to her the previous night and even an hour back while she was on her way, this sudden visit was planned by both of them.

"Edmon,” Irene took the hint right away, “At least I had better hopes on you. Didn't I tell you that if I don't get a response by this morning I will barge into his office this afternoon?" Edmon tried hard to suppress his laughter and looked away immediately. Anastasio would bury him alive if he found out, should he run for his life already?

"I had been asking Edmon for the last five days for your response. But, no, not a word.” she shrugged, “Now Sio, I know Edmon is not completely at fault, so don't throw dagger like glares at him.”

Edmon wanted to wink and raise thumbs up to this marvelous woman for saving his life for the ‘nth’ time.

Irene gently placed the red envelope with the gold seal of the Magnolia estate, on the table in front of him, the customary invitation for the foundation day ball. Anastasio had never cared to know the significance of this day or that house either. He remembered visiting with his parents a couple of times as a child. There was not a single good memory associated with that place rather, the two worst things of his life had happened around that place. Magnolia Estate brought back dreadful memories which would haunt Anastasio for the rest of his life.

However, he didn’t want to mention any of that in front of his grandmother; she already had her own share of trauma which she had been fighting valiantly.

“Granda” Anastasio spoke with an ice cold voice, “You and grandpa aren’t playing fair. You are well aware it’s impossible for me to refuse you both. However, I am sorry, I can’t be there. I can’t meet, greet and sweet talk with those people.”

“Sio” Irene cut him off, this time she was stern and looked straight into his eyes, “You must learn to bear the weight of the crown you wear. As Faunoa(s) we have forever honoured our tradition, and it’s your turn to carry the legacy, don’t forget you are the heir of this family. Customs and traditions have their roots buried deep in the past; we must abide by them just like our ancestors did, otherwise the balance gets disrupted. So, even if you don’t like it, you must do it for the honour of the name you hold.”

Anastasio was well aware that there was no more room for discussion, when it came to the honour of the family; his otherwise kind grandparents were uncompromising.
