Eve woke with a start, realizing it was already evening. She reluctantly got out of bed and walked toward the window, staring outside. The sun had completely set, leaving behind an empty, dark sky. She turned to the mirror and examined her reflection. Though she wore no jewels to adorn her bare neck like Lady Oriana, she looked like a different person entirely in the lavish dress. She had never imagined wearing such rich clothing, as she was nothing more than a servant. Eve couldn't help but wonder if the King would cast her aside once he realized she was just an ordinary maid, unfit to be his bride. But then she remembered that he had seen her in her maid's uniform, so he must have known.
Why, then, was he getting close to her? Grace had said that she would likely become a mistress to the King, a mere plaything until he found a suitable wife.
Her stomach growled, reminding her that she had missed lunch, and she had no idea when dinner would be served. As she stepped out of her room, she encountered Ezra waiting by the door.
"What are you doing here?" Eve asked.
"His Highness asked me to stay with you, in case you need anything," Ezra replied.
"Do you think I can get some fruits from the kitchen?" Eve inquired.
"Yes, milady. I can fetch them for you," Ezra offered.
"No, don't worry. I'll walk down to the kitchen. You can come along."
As they turned into a corridor, Eve stumbled upon the blond-haired vampire from earlier, but he wasn't alone. Her eyes widened in shock as she saw him drinking blood from a woman's neck. The vampire held the woman gently by the waist, his head buried deep in her neck. He suddenly looked up, his eyes dark and intense as they met Eve's.
He released the woman and stepped away, his gaze never leaving Eve's face. He licked his bloody lips, smirking as if he had just enjoyed a delicious meal. The woman bowed her head and walked away in a daze, seemingly oblivious to the interruption.
"Lady Evelyn," the vampire called, his eyes still locked on her.
"Good evening, Sire," she said, bowing her head. This was only the third time she had encountered him, first at the dining table and then in the library.
"Good evening, Lord Leif," Ezra bowed as well.
Lord Leif? Eve glanced at him in surprise. He was the knight who had brought her to this kingdom.
"You missed lunch and dinner, Lady Evelyn," he remarked.
She had missed dinner as well? How early did they eat?
"Yes, milord, I was asleep," she replied, bowing again.
"Go arrange Lady Evelyn's meal at the table. I'll escort her downstairs," Leif instructed Ezra, who bowed and hurried away.
As they walked to the dining room, Eve couldn't help but cast furtive glances at the vampire, feeling uneasy after catching him in the act of feeding.
"Don't stare too long. My brother is possessive," Leif warned, looking at her.
"I wasn't staring," Eve quickly looked away and muttered. A thought suddenly struck her, and she turned back to him. "His Highness is your brother?" she asked.
"Hmm... He is," Leif confirmed, his hands tucked casually in his pockets.
"It's good that you're building a good relationship with him," He said, Eve saw his fangs peeking out of his mouth as he smirked.
"We are not building any relationship, Lord Leif. You assumed wrong," Eve almost scoffed. To think she would build a relationship with the King, she would rather be a free meal to the vampires.
"I see," Leif trailed like he was in deep thoughts. The doors was pushed open for the both of them to step in. Before she could sit, Leif pulled a chair for her much to her surprise and she turned to look at him.
"Sit."
Eve sat down to the meal on the table and her stomach growled lowly at the sight of the extravagant meal. A dish of steak and vegetables and a fruit dessert all artfully arranged on the table. She had missed only lunch and dinner, not a whole week meal. Leif took a seat across from her and watched as she ate. When he first arrived to pick her up, her mother had asked her sister to lend her a dress, which suggested that she might not have access to such luxuries on a regular basis. As she ate, he noticed that she used the right cutlery and got the proper etiquettes but didn't seem overly concerned with impressing him. She ate with a carefree attitude compared to other women he had encountered who were more preoccupied with their image and how they were seen.
She was the only human in a family of vampires, which made her stand out as unique and different. Little did she know that there was a mysterious tale behind her own life. Leif smirked as he plucked a grape from the cluster and savored its tartness, thinking that the human had much more to experience in life and had to live longer.
"You seem to enjoy the steak more," Leif said, starting a conversation with her. Eve looked up from her meal and nodded. The steak was well cooked and had a great taste. Perks of being rich.
"I would be more than glad to hunt more rabbits for you then since you loved it so much," He said, and picked up a glass of water. He twirled his finger round the rim of the cup before drinking from it.
"Rabbit?" Eve's face turned pale as she realized that she was eating rabbit meat. In her mind's eye, she could see the poor animal hopping in front of her before being struck down with an arrow.
Feeling uneasy, she pushed the meat to one side of her plate and cleared her throat, "I would have enjoyed it if it was less salty and not overcooked," she said, picking up the vegetables to eat instead.
"Is it?" Leif frowned, "I would have the cook punished for this," he snapped.
"There's no need, the vegetables is tastier," Eve quickly added so the cook won't be punished for her lies.
"We don't tolerate mistakes from the maids, it brings a second time," Leif said sternly and she gulped.
Please, forgive me, dear chef. She pleaded in her mind.
"The next hunt would be in two days," Eve heard Leif said and she turned to look at him.
I'll love to have you come along."
