The skies on the fifth floor were strangely clear, despite that, not much sunlight poured our way. The land of even more dungeons and even more monsters, the fifth floor entirely was a boss room made by the tower to mark the end of the tutorial phase. It was the best way to show us that danger won't be predefined and could come in any form or way inside.
Unfortunately, that lesson was reaped by the Regressor and me alone.
The light of the elevator flashed and out we stepped onto the fifth floor.
Quite a few people had made their game up here after seeing the level of the monsters below had become too small for them to grow with. Not every kill got you points, you had to sell stuff. But to keep selling you needed to grow stronger which could only be done through challenging tougher monsters. Tougher monsters also went for more points so that was natural.
The room of the boss which was empty on this floor was the room leading to the next floor. We had decided to gather there.
After a fairly short walk, the Regresssor and I made our way toward the place where the gathering was to be held. We were the last ones again, of course, on purpose.
Jumping in and taking control of a room was the easiest, after all.
The place with enormous pillars all around us was lit up by rays of blue while the inside was littered with golden carvings and engravings tracing the perimeter of the dome-shaped boss room.
"Odd pair…" the wizard said, her brows pumped up.
"Problem?" I asked.
She clicked her tongue and turned away while the others in the room greeted us in their own way. Mignon waved and Olivia came in for a high five, neither of which I didn't respond to, while the Colonel turned away and the Blade of Darkness nodded at me.
The Regressor, on the other hand, ended up speaking both French and ancient Latin at the two cheerful folks who answered him with great surprise. I could only hope he was not ruining his hard-built image, but they did seem too impressed for that to happen.
"If you're done fooling around," I said. "Can we get to it?"
"Well what's the rush?" The wizard spoke. "In any case, this is the only time you can hope to be able to do this without having eyes on you, Mr. Linguist."
Right. I had forced the linguist name on him again. The cat tried to scratch me when I told it, but I didn't think it was that bad.
"I don't mind there being eyes on us. It's only natural for that to be the case," Mignon spoke up. He then brushed his hair back and flashed us a charming smile. "My looks are just what reporters love."
Olivia flicked her hair back and smiled too, "Mine too! Mine too!"
"Right? If you're going to be the face that's banding this group together, then you best get used to some public appearances. It's not that bad."
At those words, the man next to me, the Blade of Darkness, leaned closer and spoke.
"She's lying. It just sucks. The people can make you uncomfortable and the cameras are always after your face."
Why was this bitch chumming up to me?
Did he think I was a social outcast like him? Sorry, but I had confidence in my looks.
"Alright, let's begin then,"
It seemed the conversation those guys were having came to an end and we all moved toward the end of the wall in the boss room.
"It's just going to be more dungeons. I hope this one's boss doesn't come down," the Wizard said as the Regressor went to the front, the key in his hands.
There wasn't a space to place the key in, but it started glowing with a bright light as soon as the Regressor pushed the key ahead.
And then, the tower's window came in front of us again.
[Congratulations on completing the fifth floor of the Tower!]
[For people living in the tower, we have prepared a special feature over the next five floors]
"What is this now…"
"Special feature? Five floors? You mean there's not going to be dungeons anymore?"
[The next floors will be helping you through your journey in climbing the tower! Please find the perfect resources to climb with]
I gulped. Everything was as I remembered.
[From grasslands that can sustain thousands of crops and grow in months to deposits of the rarest of mana crystals and metals, anything can be found on the next floor based on your luck]
But.
As cruel as the tower was.
Its words just as filled with falsehood as the sight of its sun.
[Please turn the key to proceed to the next floor]
"Wait, wait, wait," the wizard spoke up. "It said its luck based. The one with the highest luck here should spin it."
It was something else to see veterans working. The Regressor was trembling in his feet, but everyone else here had accepted the tower's words without any time needed to process it at all. If that wasn't enough, they had also seen through one of its hints.
"Mine is a measly 23."
"Measly?" Mignon spoke. "That's crazy high. I just have 20."
"Oh! Samesies!" Olivia raised her hands Mignon went to give her a high five, but she dodged and loomed her hand above the wizard.
"Not you, unlucky loser."
Ouch.
"I am 15," the Colonel shook his head.
"25."
Then all of them turned toward me. I scowled.
I had recently received three whole stats points in my luck after the snake battle.
"Four…"
"Pfft."
"How…"
"That's really unlucky, eh? Ati?"
"Then, I guess it's decided." The blade of darkness pulled back the sleeves of his coat and turned toward the Regressor before stopping in his tracks. "And you?"
"I…" The Regressor didn't drop his act of being smart. "A little more… than forty…"
All of them had their jaws dropped.
But I knew.
He was too lucky for that to be the case.
"How much more?" I asked right away.
"About… twenty more…"
"HAH!? It's in the sixties?"
"RNGesus!"
The Blade of Darkness sighed. "It is decided after all. Go ahead."
The Regressor nodded.
It was the most correct decision. Letting the Regressor handle it was better than anything.
The Regressor slowly twisted the key, and the bright light spread up in a line, almost like it was a door.
It was the correct decision… but unfortunately, luck wasn't that easy.
[The sixth floor has been opened.]
[Chosen Resource Floor - Dwelling Nest of Sand Worms]
[Features - Carnivorous sandworms live in this desert where neither a tree nor a drop of water can be found. The sandworms are brittle-boned and have very little meat. Their hide disappears when they die!]
"Ah…" A gasp left the Regressor.
"T-this kind of floor…"
—Tap
"We'll die—Wait! Ativan!? Ativan von Carley!"
"Put that fucking knife down."
In front of me was the Regressor, wide-eyed.
—SLASH
And in his neck, my knife.
