Capítulo 35: The Bug-catching Boy

Ecruteak Gym lecture hall.

Cain had turned over all the books about Ecruteak City's history in the lecture hall.

The purpose was to find the records of the third ancestor and the heroic deeds of the Fourth.

However, Cain searched through all the historical books, and everything before the Fourth was just briefly mentioned, while a lot of space was devoted to the less important events after Fifth ancestor era.

No wonder, in his previous life, Cain had spent a considerable amount of time in Ecruteak City without developing any interest the Yan's family. There was no valuable information recorded in the history books.

This only piqued Cain's interest in the Fourth even more. What kind of person was he that he could influence the records in the history books?

In the afternoon, he was about to go with Raikou to explore the location of the tomb palace.

A boy wearing baggy pants, a short-sleeved shirt, a straw hat on his head, and a bug-catching net in his hand entered the gym.

He was known as the "Bug-catching Boy."

"Is anyone here?"

At that moment, Raikou walked over, "What are you shouting for? What do you want?"

"I'm here to challenge the gym."

Raikou gave a disdainful look, "You're a Pokémon Trainer too?"

"Of course, I have two Pokémon," the Bug-catching Boy said proudly.

"Fine, you're amazing. So, how long have you been a Pokémon Trainer, and how many Gym Badges do you have?"

The youngster was asked an embarrassing question and hesitated, "Well, I've only been a trainer for a month, and I don't have any Gym Badges yet."

"Go home, you can't win," Cain approached and said at this moment.

Cain had seen too many people like this, mostly from poor families who couldn't afford to buy starter Pokémon and didn't have the ability to raise and nurture them. Still, they harbored dreams of becoming Pokémon Masters. So, they relied on themselves, took simple tools, and went to relatively safe jungles, mostly catching gentle Bug-type Pokémon like Caterpie and Ledyba.

After obtaining their first Pokémon, they often lost themselves, feeling like they were one step closer to becoming Pokémon Masters. They would embark on a journey as Pokémon Trainers without hesitation. They struggled to afford food in the wild and could only rely on themselves for money to raise their Pokémon. They usually earned a meager income by collecting berries and medicinal herbs for the Pokémon Centers.

Their ambitions were high, but fate was cruel. Such people were in the same situation as when Cain left his family in his previous life. They were destined to fail by following the conventional path. They didn't realize that their existence only served to give experience to the league's main trainers, becoming stepping stones for others' success.

That's why Cain sought change, setting traps in the wild, initially robbing items and later snatching Pokémon to sell. Eventually, he even committed murder for profit. He spent twenty years on the path of a Pokémon hunter.

To put it bluntly, his ruthless and cunning nature was forced upon him by this world.

However, most people who chose the ordinary path hit walls everywhere after a few years, making no progress and barely supporting themselves. They had to return to their ordinary lives at home, and their youthful passion would be forever buried. Some with even worse luck would soon pay the price for their wild fantasies, as countless low-level trainers lost their lives in the wild.

The situation did not improve at all before the 700-year reform of the League.

Hearing Cain say this, the bug-catching boy was naturally not willing to back down, "I want to challenge you. If I win against you, you have to let me challenge the Gym Leader."

"There's no need. If you defeat me, I'll give you the badge directly," Cain said coldly.

The bug-catching boy suddenly felt an opportunity had come because Cain seemed younger than him, making him easier to deal with than the Gym Leader.

His blood was boiling with excitement!

"Come out, Butterfree."

Watching the bug-catching boy's excited appearance, Raikou could only feel sorry for him. No one knew better than him the consequences of underestimating Cain.

A month was enough time for a Caterpie to evolve into a Butterfree. When the bug-catching boy sent out his Butterfree, it further confirmed his suspicion.

"Gastly."

After glancing at the Butterfree, whose eyes were dull, wings wrinkled, and poorly developed, Cain realized that the bug-catching boy's financial ability could only nurture a Butterfree to this extent.

"Butterfree, use Confusion to show him some stars."

The bug-catching boy shouted, and Butterfree hesitated for a moment before concentrating on using Confusion.

"Embargo."

After a few days of solo practice, Gastly's Embargo had slightly improved. Upon receiving Cain's command, it quickly attacked with a roar, and the terrifying aura mixed within the sound waves immediately scared Butterfree stiff.

"Confuse Ray."

Cain shook his head. Gastly's half-baked Embargo skill could only make a Ditto stiff for three seconds at most, but this Butterfree was as if it had been scared silly. It didn't even react when it was surrounded by Confuse Ray.

The effected Butterfree could no longer hear the bug-catching boy's commands and kept hitting itself.

Gastly finished the battle with a few Lick attacks.

From beginning to end, Butterfree had no fighting spirit, it was completely listless. As a result, it didn't even manage to pull off a single powerful move before losing its ability to battle.

"Don't think you're great just because you beat my Butterfree. You won't stand a chance against this one. Come on out, Rattata!"

This Rattata was a bit more spirited, and it knew to use Normal-type moves against Ghost-types. It seemed that this young Bug Catcher had some basic knowledge.

"Charge, Rattata! Use Quick Attack and follow up with Bite!"

Following the Bug Catcher's command, Rattata started running towards Gastly. After getting close to Gastly, it leaped into the air, its fangs flashing with a wicked Dark-type energy as it attempted to bite the ghost.

Cain had no intention of letting his Pokemon dodge.

"Night Shade."

A mass of shadows instantly enveloped Gastly, and Rattata dove headfirst into the illusion, disappearing from sight.

"Rattata, Rattata, what have you done to my Rattata?"

Suddenly unable to see his Pokémon, the Bug Catcher became anxious and called out urgently.

"Don't worry, it'll come out once you've lost," Ray said somewhat impatiently.

"What do you mean?"

Just as the Bug Catcher was questioning, Rattata fell from the shadows, having had its life energy drained and losing its ability to battle.

Recalling Rattata, the Bug Catcher was understandably dejected. He had lost his first Gym battle without even touching his opponent.

"You can go now."

In a way, Cain's quick defeat of the Bug Catcher was actually helping him. If the Bug Catcher gave up his dream of becoming a Pokémon Master, perhaps it would save his life. It was a lesson in survival in the harsh world of Pokémon.
